I remember when Binky latched on to that Aussie tourist and marched around with the shoe afterwards.
I never laughed so hard in all my life.
Woman went over the barricade and got about 5’ from the cage. Binky just reached out and pulled her against the cage with one paw, then sunk his teethe into her leg. 😂😂😂

They say it was a black bear and the guy was just sitting in his chair at his camp drinking coffee. The bear drug him off so the neighbors had a hard time getting a clear shot. I was working at the hospital and heard this from EMS.
If nobody was there how do we know he was not harassing the bear?

My folks who live in Colorado called last night and said that there was a black bear at the house getting into the trash, and their dog was going crazy up on the second story patio deck. My first question was to my dad did you shoot it? He said no and I said well he’ll be back.

I don’t like the idea of killing things unless I’m going to eat them, but in the case of bears, getting in the trash, they will always come back and they'll surprise you at the most inconvenient time. I told him next time he sees the bear to shoot it square between the eyes with his 45.

It's my understanding that anything under a magnum in handgun will just annoy the bear.
Not exactly true.
“Bears” can be a 150 pound black bear garbage scavenger or a 700 pound fuck you up grizzly.
There is no rule.
My typical Alaska hiking kit was a mossberg with slugs and .44 Mag blackhawk revolver.
My typical fishing gear would be the mini 14 and the .44
It would also depend if I was on the Kenia peninsula or north around the big Susitna drainage.
Different bears in different areas.
Guys would ask me “will that mini 14 kill a bear?”
I’d say “well, the first 30 rounds might piss him off, but the second 30 rounds should do it…”
The biggest Grizzly I never saw was on Croto Slew up near the Deshka river off the Big Su.
We saw the prints coming out of the water while we were drifting the slew for moose.
I stood with both feet inside one paw print.
Got a picture of that somewhere.
Never saw the bear. 😳

My brother did his master thesis on Grizz at university of Montana. He spent a lot of time in the back country with the craighead family. He has a very technical book out on the species.

To sum it up I aint camping in anything other than a hard side camper and a minimum of 40 cal. lol
Good round to short yourself to stop the mauling

I don't get it, if you spend time in the woods or trails bring a damn handgun. Especially for black bear, cougar and "wolves" in my area now. Grizzly territory it's a whole different circumstance.
I guess YOGI found himself a buffet.
I could not find the video where an avid outdoorsman did reaction and accuracy testing with both a handgun and bear spray. It was eye-opening. Carrying bear spray and/or a handgun is wise, but I doubt many people practice using either. The guy in the video failed 90% of his bear spray tests. I'm not confident he ever passed a single test to satisfactory results with bear spray and he knew the simulator was coming. On the handgun side, he failed every time with the revolver, but he was able to pass with a 9MM. He marginally passed with the 10MM.

I really enjoy solo hiking and mountain biking, but I don't do it in Montana. Like I said before a dog is in my future, our kid's dogs greatly reduce the encounter opportunity. I'm just not ready for a dog yet, as I'm not in a position to provide it the attention it deserves.

When I lived in Alaska I was made fun of for carrying a .44 magnum model 629 4” as being to small.

I did carry 305 grain hard cast flat nose lead bullets to give the most out of it

And Sitka Brown Bear, Kodiak and coastal brown are a lot bigger then inland grizzly bears btw

i have had an idea on how to help prevent a bear attack some kind of inflatable device that comes out of your back pac and makes you look way bigger than you are powered by a co2 cartridge like is used in life boats
shoots out the top and sides like a peacock

and i always wondered if shooting a bear with #6 or #4 bird shot in the face to blind them would make escape easier since killing them is so difficult
the scenario i’m thing is bear is charging you have time to put a round or 3 in into its face and you dodge to the side and he can’t find you as you run away

now with both those ideas i’m not willing to be the guinea pig just spit balling hear
i think i going to refresh my whisky
Not sure what load he had in this lamp, but it appears to be at least a 12 gauge. And he wasn't aiming for the face. lol

I'm still confused. Aren't black bears herbivores?
"Omnivores" I believe. They'll eat whatever they can get their paws on relatively easily. The little bears in the San Gabriel Mountains seemed to lean towards the veggies, but I think because the snack food was fast in the area...not many bigger mammals, like dear and such.

Investigators are now saying it was the F150 that enraged the Bear

He looks pretty well fed...and honestly quite a bit bigger than the average ones around here.
I was surprised myself. The dog door now gets closed at night time…. Not that it would matter if one of those big boys wanted to come it lol

Agreed im talking around AZ for these little black bears.

Brown bears, different story. Then again my buddy got a grizz, polar and a kodiak with a bow and was unarmed.. nuts.

Well Arizona has the biggest black bears on record actually. Eastern az area though. Biggest shot was 899 lbs.

If you want a semi auto bear gun.

10mm glock with the longest barrel in stock is what you need. 200 grain hard cast flat nose.

Always hard cast for any bullet on bear btw

According to Alaska fish and game

.44 mag min for pistol

30-06 min for rifle

Good luck getting a perfect shot when a bear charges out of the bush on you in under 20 yards and your panicking to draw and fire
Alaska thought this happened In Arizona?

Animals differ slightly between those states.

We've been looking for a vacation home in that area. I'm glad I didn't pick one because I would probably be in jail because I'd smoke every bear I saw in the area.

Also get an aftermarket stainless barrel that has a full length supported chamber. On HOT loads the case will expand/case bulge and possibly blow out. The Glock barrel rifling doesn’t play nice with cast slugs either.

I’ll take a pick of my set up when I get home from this open house I’m at.

If you are confused between black and brown bears they are easy to distinguish. Black bears are usually the ones digging in the trash, sitting at a table in someone’s yard or in the pool. They are like a Labrador. The brown or grizzly will have your head in its mouth before you can run. Most of the stories I’ve read that when the person first spotted the grizzly, the bear was on them before everything registered.

Yes 44mag would be the minimum for pistol and for rifle I say 45-70. There is a reason Ruger has the Alaskan model RedHawks. Like said placement is important, you need to stop it in its tracks. There is a video I’ll find of a lion attack and it’s a good example of why you have to. Another theory is just carry a 22, but always hike with someone. If a bear attacks shoot your partner in the knee and run, the bear will eat him.

Thats big! Weve done some bushwhack hiking up there along the Black river near Alpine. I love that country

I was pretty alert for the bear situation, but it may make me rethink my loads.
I got the 40 so Im rolling with it in AZ at least, or taking Cdog with me. :)

I carry a big canister of bear spray in the side door of my car, but it’s mostly for non lethal urban encounters should one arise😉

I can’t imagine a human would enjoy getting hit with bear spray 😂

Black bear in Agoura Hills around 2003
Years ago (1/2 Century). Jungle Land Zoo in 1000 Oaks. Lion or Tiger mauled Jayne Mansfield. Jungle Land was a well run place for animals that worked in movies. Ol,Jayne just got too close.

Interesting when you see it like that. He’s coming so fast hardly any spray gets on him. Hes determined at that point anyway.

There is another video of a survivor talking about his attack. He saw the bear and thought it was retreating about 100 yards out. It turned and charged without warning and the guy didn’t have time to adequately get his spray out or his gun and it was too late - he was on him in 2 seconds. . He talks about the mauling and hiking back to his truck.
Even so, at that point the bear has so much adrenaline you could shoot the shit out of it and it would still keep going for a minute or 2 enough… time to mortally wound a person.

I probably spend more time than most in those hills. The area this attack was in is 3-4 miles from Costco. Not a great hiking area, just not as many great views. Hauled a lot of firewood from the area, kids in tow, never had an issue. Two ridges west, there are some church/boy scout camps.

If you look into places out that way, and are worried about taking out a bear, either "I was scared for my life!", and Sheriffs will call the lion park to remove, or run a can, and let the scavengers take it.

Up until recently, this is what I carried cutting firewood and hiking. It isn't a real expensive gun, so I wasn't as worried about abusing it. Now that I do more hiking than wood cutting, I've found it to be more uncomfortable. 10-15 mile hikes are different than being mostly stationary with a saw. A single stack .40 is much more agreeable.

Grizz in AZ. Tombstone at its busiest was prior to any refrigeration. Along with numerous miners etc there also were professional hunters Fresh meat was brought to town by these hired hunters. One of those hunters was killed by a Grizzly somewhere outside of Tombstone. At least that’s what a Tombstone Park Ranger told us. Very possible. At one time they ranged into northern Mexico.

I wouldn't be surprised, brown bear had a historical range that stretched as far south as Sonora Mexico. They were hunted to extinction in the southern areas of their range around the turn of the 20th Century.

If memory serves the last brown bear killed in Colorado was taken west of Telluride in the 1910's sometime. There are reported sightings every once in a while, but nothing definitive, and these are usually chalked up to very large Cinnamon colored black bears.

Always buy bear spray even for protection against all the walking zombies out there. It is way stronger than the regular pepper spray they push.

If I'm gonna carry a hand gun for close quarter bear attacks i would only be a wheel gun , not anything that might have possible complications
That's always been up for debate. Sand, grit, mud, etc, could be an issue should it happen to get lodged in the wrong places. In terms of bears, I have little experience. I kind of figure there may be a chance, while said bear is trying to eat me, that I may drop the gun. Obviously not the most optimal situation, but neither is becoming lunch. My only requirement for a pack arm, has to have never had a FTF. Both I've carried in the past 10 years have had "perfect records", regardless of whatever crap I've fed them.

If you’re hiking in the bush you should probably be carrying guns that can handle the elements. If you’re relying on a gun made like a Swiss watch that you can’t get near dirt probably not going to end well.
