Dave, you have to go see a specialist again to makes sure you don't have an infection. My wife's had three broken bones and had to have two plates put in. Her scars healed in less than a month but the ankle was swollen for quite some time. Therapy lasted a whole year before she walked perfect, few miles on the wheelchair and a lot of steps on crutches;), Her damaged ankle looks a tad beefier with the plates in place, no biggie.

Doesn’t matter.. we put it on, and then it looks like that a few hours later.

Someday this shit has to end.. Thing has been on tilt since the regatta. I mean barely get out of bed pain for four days straight..

You can see the indentation from my flip flop.

Wendi told you to go to the Doctor that fixed her arm here in Havasu he would of been close to you in case something like this happen. But you insisted on going to Cali (aka better Dr). Now your Doctor is far from you. You gotta get that foot better. I need you man. We gotta some off roading to do.

Are you getting him hand controls for the Can Am for Christmas?

I know and OCSD sheriff who is older than Dave broke his tibia, fibia and knee, all shattered racing his dirt bike like 5-6 weeks ago. He’s had the external metal deals in and out already and is already on crutches. They already have him in PT. He will be walking again, but will need a knee replacement after everything heals. Different injury I know but they say he will be walking with no crutch inside 4 months.

Dave - it might be worth having a doc look at your circulation below the knee.

Lots of people that smoke and are over their ideal weight suffer from peripheral artery disease. Which basically is the plaque in your arterial structure below the knees reduces quality blood flow.

Bad flow = poor healing.

Still having open wounds after this amount of time tells me something is up that is causing delayed healing.

If it were me, I’d go to the cath lab and get a guide wire down there and stent it or open it up...

Good luck in your recovery
Best advice on here Dave, please do this as soon as possible. No way the wound should still be open. JMHO

They call it smokers legs as the circulation of blood to the lower extremities is restricted due to poor blood flow.
My father in law lost his right leg to this and couldn't even put pressure on his left due to the pain he suffered.

You need to throw those sticks in the trash for good, the sooner the better and get that wound looked at ASAP.

A good friend lost his mother to "smokers leg". I had a coworker that was a serious smoker, she injured her neck. The issue turned into a degenerative bone issue in her neck due to the smoking. She was on a steady down hill slide over several years. I am not sure what happened to her at this point as she was medically retired from the state over this. My guess is that she doesn't have all that long left in life, but still won't give up the smokes.

Dave, Not my circus but you really need to think about the smokes again. As many more knowledgeable people on here have said, they do effect healing significantly. You got kids and family, it might be time to re-evaluate your life. I know its hard but nothing good is coming from the smokes and its fairly clear they are not doing you any favors with your recovery. I'm not one to harass others about their life choices, I make my own messes. Just a little food for thought.

Man that shit looks rough RD. Damn. Hope it gets better soon.

My MIL did the same thing about the same time as you and she is all better now. She was in a wheelchair for a while too. But she walks fine now.

The only difference is she is 75 YO

I will ask her about the swelling.

Your friend had a similar injury? How’s his foot doing now?

People that have had this injury told me that it will swell up for years afterwards.. but I just can’t help but think this thing should be better off than it is..

Swelling to the extent of your pics should not occur for years. Mine would swell if I over did it for about a year after surgery, after that swelling was minimal.

Here are pictures of my ankle which I broke back in 2008. The first is as my buddies were tapping a breaker bar to my leg to hold it to my foot to get to the hospital. Notice my shoe... my foot is in there and flat on the ground. I completely disconnected my foot from my leg (sans skin and tendons). The others were probably taken about 3-4 months after surgery. As you can see the atrophy of my left leg was fully set in and to this day despite cycling 20 miles per day for a year straight and a fair amount of gym time it is still noticeably skinnier than my right.

It was crazy in that the two of you were about a week apart. He came over for dinner last weekend. He is able to walk although it is slowly. We have about 10 steps up to our home and he walked up without any difficulty. I even laughed because I offered to piggy back him if needed. No way I could do it being that he is 6’4” and about 275-300 lbs. Leaving the house he did take the steps one at a time but did not need any assistance. I did not look closely at his leg being that most of the time we were talking about the wife and her brain tumor, surgery and recovery most of the night. What I recall the scar was not as festering as your does.

I also have an friend who is a heavy equiptment mechanic who has been out of work for 4 years with a shoulder injury. long story but one bad doctor after another and then replacement that was an issue now he might have to fly to the mainland to get it done right for the last time.

One thing that I have found in the last 8 months with my wife, friend and other people we have met having second and third surgeries is that complex procedures should not be handled in small towns.

Issues of people in the last 8 months that I have come in contact with

Friend in Honolulu 3 surgeries on his shoulder
Wife’s brain tumor and surgery in San Francisco at UCSF, Flawless and incredible recovery. Still a few issues but not as bad as it could have been.
Double lung transplant at UCSF second attempt after a failure in Petaluma
Third brain surgery at UCSF after two failed attempts in Modesto
Brain surgery in Sierra Nevada only to come to UCSF for further treatment.

Best to you Dave. I don’t like to see anyone go through medical issues.

I can walk, and can ten steps pretty easily. If I walk too far (all day off and on) I will pay for it and be in bed the next day. That regatta killed me last weekend and it was a pretty shitty beginning of the week.. lol

That said I pretty rarely use crutches now. I try to keep the distances within 400’ though and not stand too long.

People are seeing the 5 months, but that’s from the initial time if the injury.

Gotta remember I went to a doctor here in Havasu that absolutely f’d me.. Then I had one surgery to straighten and hold in place, as wel
As reduce heel. Second surgery to remove that fixative and reduce heel
Again. Third surgery to remove one one of the screws that was holding some bones together.

My last surgery was I believe two months ago, and last major one was about 3.

So the 5 months was from injury but last major surgery was only 3.

On the smokers leg thing I have reduced smoking considerably, I have had two today as a matter of fact. Every time we check my oxygen levels they are 100% etc. my circulation isn’t the best, but I’m working on that as well.

As for the rest I am going to go talk to the surgeon again and get his opinions.
