Our Youth can not count money!

What has happened to our youth. I’m at Nekter now getting a juice. Total is $10.45, I give $11. The cashier is lost, I’m mean a min goes by, she looks at receipt, looks at change, the older lady making drinks comes to assist and quickly handled counting change.

But it’s everywhere , Chikfil, in n out, Home Depot are just a few. If you give them change, say like $6.06 on a $5.56 so you get 2 quarters they are lost, and have given me $1 change.

Very scary times when you can’t perform 3 rd grade math!

I remember my dad teaching us multiplication when we were 6 or 7 and he turned it into a game. He would just yell out across the house 6x8 and we would yell out the answer. It was fun but then he would also smack us if we got it wrong after a while lol.

Thanks to teaching to the lowest common denominator, this 3rd grade math is now 12th grade math.

Just imagine what the colleges and universities are dealing with. Their entrance students need about 4 years of remedial classes just to start the four years of actual college level work, but you gotta get them graduated in only 4 years.

I worked at the Live Oak store in Arcadia from 79-81. Scanners just came out and never scanned the same prices as on the shelves it was such a pain. All the produce codes we had to learn - I still remember code 69 was for white potatoes and 96 was loose carrots. I really hated dealing with the public.

It's not just the younger generation, I had a senior citizen get confused when I gave her $20.50 for a $10.50 purchase. She actually got angry with me when I said it's just a $10 bill back. Like I tried to jump over the counter and school her mad. It happens to all types/ages.

On a different note, I would have ~$2000 in cash and checks vs invoices and receipts in my tow book. I was upset if a dime was missing, I was proud of the fact that I would balance at the end of the week.

My dad did it with candy. Kids pay attention with candy involved. You only got the candy if you got the right answer.

I had my boys calculate the bill and change from dinner. Each had a pencil and paper. The correct answer got to keep the change. If they both were correct, they split it.

Multiple syllable words earned a buck or two per syllables. By dinner time spell, pronounce, and giving the definition would get her paid. Vocabulary is an amazing thing. You can be dumb as a box of rocks, but still appear bright with a large vocabulary. Or visa versa!

Parents are partially to blame. They need to be involved and aware of what their kids are learning, and not learning. But, the teachers and their Admin know exactly what they are teaching. And also know what they should be teaching. Unfortunately, at one time many of those teachers and Admin were my generation. While in college and after they needed to find a way to stay out of the Vietnam draft. At least the guys did. The instructors and admin who followed continued down that New Education path. We’re really beginning to see the results of that now. Given current public education and their emphasis directions any future improvement seems highly unlikely.
