So several years ago my better half’s dad built a 12’ mini schiada in his garage. He was thinking about getting rid of it in the last year and she wanted to keep it since her dad built it so we bought it from him. We wanted to update the gel to match our boat since we plane to keep it long term.

I was a little conflicted about putting a bunch of money into a home made boat, but the sentimental value was worth a lot more to her than building a new one, so we got it, took it out for a rip on the lake, then promptly tore it down to get all new gel.. Here are some pics.

Was the hull from schiada then he rigged it himself? Or he did the gel himself with a schiada mold?

I’m just a little confused cause you’re saying it is “home built”.

Looks great none the less! I’ve always wanted a mini.

No, he literally laid up the hull by hand in his garage… Creating the shape in wood and then applying fiberglass

Now the question is… do we go formula race 60 going back on? Anyone interested in a Tohatsu 50 that probably has less than 10 hours on it?

How much for the 50? My river neighbor has a mini I want to buy. But needs a motor.

That’s crazy, I’ve talked to you before but never knew you were Jim’s son in law. I’ve know Jim a long time. 👍

Then I got this today… He really nailed our colors. I can’t wait to see it in person and see it next to our Howard. Time to think about rigging it back up. It only took me about 3 hours to strip it down. I’m guessing that won’t be the case going back together.

I don’t really know. I haven’t even looked into the 60, so I’ll do some digging and let you know if I’m going to go that route. Hopefully you aren’t in a hurry.

No hurry. I tried to buy it 2 years ago. Now the cover is gone and Parker sun has took its toll on it. Needs everything. But it would be a cool first boat for my Nephews.

Nothing as cool as what your FIL did building his own. That is definitely a keeper.

Of course not. You can't reuse that nasty old rigging on your newly regelled Notta Schiada. It'll all have to be new. Start looking online now.

Is it a 2 stroke? If so what does it weigh approximately? I might be in on that

I can’t wait to get this thing rigged back up. Pedro sent me another video at sunset so you can see the fade in the blue gel.

Ugh. Time to have the trailer redone. The CG is way off on it, so it needs work anyway. This project is quickly spiraling the budget out of control 🤣

Ugh don't give in to the commie 60 hp , a Yamaha or white Suzuki would be closer in color scheme, and yes the old motor is a DI two stroke.

Looks great, a lot of work went into all of that. Very cool.

Going from memory, which isn’t great, I think it was a Tohatsu 50 2 stroke? I remember talking to Jim about it when he was shopping for a motor. It’s been a few years however.

Came out beautiful. Please make a triple axle trailer with golf kart wheels.

That is slightly tempting, but I can’t imagine dropping that kind of coin on a new trailer. 🤣

Man!! Those guys did an OUTSTANDING job on that re-gel! Wow!!! It's GORGEOUS!! 🥰
I think Pedro from Saleen is just as excited as we were about this little boat. He hauled it down to Windsor to just get that sunset video. I can’t wait to see it in person next time we get down there.

As long as the current motor runs solid, why not save some coin and just spruce it up a bit. Paint match the cowling, and ceramic coat it all. Then spend the extra money on a slick trailer to really set it off.

So awesome. Glad you decided to keep it. Hearing the back story on the boat you are doing the right thing. That needs to stay in your family for ever!!

Not sure if you ever saw my old 10&12 on their trailers?

I’ll be down for it too. 🤣
This could be a really nice build thread!

I did… Thanks a lot for planting that seed in my brain. Did they absolutely suck to back up with 3 axles, or is it too light to make much difference? Would I have skid marks all over my driveway from dragging tires when I turn?

I totally agree. That’s why the wife doesn’t mind stretching the budget a little on this. It’s purely sentimental with no intention of ever letting it go.

If you are worried about backing it up just put the trailer hitch up a notch and it will carry the fronts..

With trailers this short though it being a triple or a tandem make them a lot easier to back up because they aren’t so twitchy.. they act like a bigger trailer so it makes it easier.

This is JMHO, and not intended to step on any baller's toes.... but I would stick with a tandem trailer. I think the triples look a little bit silly under the minis.

Put a triple under a badass 19' or a double-throwdown 21RC?? Absolutely!! But not under a mini. Just put together a clean tandem trailer, and keep it classy. No need to go overboard with this one.
