My kid is 1 month old. Crys his balls off no matter what you do. He sleeps for 3 hours stretchs at night, eats the. Takes another hour or so to get back to sleep. During the day he sleeps for 30 minutes. 15 minutes. 45 minutes. 5 minutes. Just crys and crys. Tried all the colic remedies. Tried different bottles. Different sleeping arrangements. White noise. Don't know what else to do. When he's awake he isn't happy. Maybe 30 minutes out of the day he is awake and content.

Looking for advice from some RDP parents brain trust!

Our first did that. Cried no matter what. Spit up all the time. Woke up crying. Probably for the first year. She had to sleep in a special bed, in the bed with us. We tried gripe water, all those other things.

Maybe make an apt, just to be sure. If you haven't all ready.

Broke my heart not being able to do anything.

Our twins had acid reflux. They ended up sleeping in a bouncer chair for a few months with white noise. Do you swaddle? Try that, we would swaddle and set them in their chairs for bed. Worked great till they were 4-5 months old and the acid reflux stopped.

You said bottles, so are you using formula? Have you tried something else?

Is your wife breast feeding? Has she checked to see if the baby is getting enough? Breast feeding classes? Don't laugh, they are legit, technique of the latch, weigh the baby before and after...the whole 9.

Is the baby gaining weight like he is supposed to?

This is what was wrong with our first. I couldn't think of the name at first.

This, acid reflux is very very likely the problem but the fix is called Axid. Take your kids to the Dr tomorrow and ask for a script. You will see a change within about an hour.

Our first daughter had a tough time sleeping. All I can say is good luck and be patient. It is much better than waiting for a teenager to get home that is three hours late.

He needs to fart. Set him on your lap...head by your knees, and play with his legs...push his knees against his belly. My kid was the same way. It got to the point where I'd actually lean on his feet a bit and he'd let one rip that made me proud...then a giggle and lights out. We found the Dr. Brown bottles to work the best for gas.

Kid won't breast feeding. We tried the lactation specialists and a class. He was in the NICU and was bottle fed for the first week, now he wants nothing to do with the boob. And apparently her nipples aren't the ideal breastfeeding type. My wife is pumping so he is getting 100% breast milk. My wife also has no caffeine, no alcohol in her diet, and has been that way since she was pregnant with him.

We are useing daytime and night time gripe water, gas drops, anti colic bottles. Sleeping upright in a bouncer / bassinet.

Baby is eating and gaining weight normally for his age / size. 3 Oz feedings every 2.5 to 3.5 hours

Only thing that calms him is violent shakeing. (Just kidding ) :)

Sorry man, I feel your pain. Our little girl was similar, but not quite as bad. She eventually grew out of it, but I remember those days all too well. Try to be patient...

Not a parent but I lived with both my Nieces after they were born.

Both had colic and acid reflux, one had a hard time tooting (gas).

Used to do a 3 hour stint every night to let my sister and her husband get some sleep, walking around, jumping in the lap, trying to burp them and rub the back constantly.

In their cases I'd end up getting a few good burps and toots out of them and we'd fall asleep together on a chair.

Cleared up on it's own after they both hit about 8 months.

Hang in there man, it gets rough, just stay calm :D

It's really hard given that they cannot tell you what's going on. Our little one was lactose intolerant. Switching him to almond milk was the fix. Go to the dr. Keep a log of what and when you feed them and how they react. Change 1 thing at a time. Chances are you will find the issue yourself.

My son was a huge pain in the ass, Dr Browns bottles, soy formula, volume barfing, I ended spending hours walking around outside with him on my arm head near my elbow and belly I my hand. Be patient and it gets better. I promise!

Thanks everyone. I'm going to ask the doctor about reflux tomorrow. We are going to try to have him sleep in a more upright position tonight. He is not on formula at the moment. 100% vitamin DD breast milk

That isn't fair. :)

Try Mylicon - it relieves gas and belching. It was a lifesaver. Give it to him straight or mix it up in his bottle. We found this out with our first one and it worked wonders on the second one.

Wait until teething....

Good luck.

Have you tried gripe water?? 2 of mine were colic and I know how rough it is. Putting them in the swing always helped.

I have a 6 month old. Poor kid was always upset and pissed off for her first 5 months. At 5 months she quit the boob. Started giving her Natures Best Organic Infant Formula and her disposition changed immediately! She's a happy baby, sleeps pretty much all night, does not scream her lungs off anymore, and is easily consoled when she does get upset. We think the poor kid was just starving all the time. She breast feed well, but would never nurse for a long period of time before she stopped pissed off. We spoke to our Dr. about it and he said that some mothers just have proteins in their milk that don't agree with the babies. I know breast milk is the best for them, but if they won't eat enough because they don't like it they're screwed.

More than likely it's gas or acid reflux. What is causing that and the best way to deal with it is the issue. If he's passing gas and burping fairly regularly, it's likely acid. Just make sure you have a good pediatrician that will actually look for the problem vs just telling you "it's colic, he'll grow out of it".

Here are a few remedies that have worked for me over the last 3 kids.

Sierra has reflux and my breast milk agitated it because it was so thin. When I finally gave in and gave her Similac Sensitive my life got a WHOLE lot easier.

With Daniel Gripe water worked every time. Be careful though it goes bad and molds so you have to always check expiration date.

With Summer I discovered essential oils. I use Digest-zen by Doterra. Mix a couple drops with coconut oil and rub on tummy and back. Within a few seconds they usually fart or burp. I even drink it myself when I'm feeling bloated from drinking etc. stuff is awesome.

Some swear by newborn chiropractic adjustments. It's not as harsh as if one of us was going to the chiro. They just make a few manipulations on their back and it could make a huge difference. There are chirps that specialize in this. We have one in Havasu and I know of another in Encinitas, CA. I'm sure there is a good one where you live if you ask around.

There's a lot of good info here. I appreciate it. River Daves Place is an awesome community.

One thing I found out that help sooth Dylan while is crying is the microwave exhaust fan. He immediately stops crying. I'm thinking about bolting an exhaust fan to his crib. LoL

I just remembered I also used the rock n play sleeper with Summer. It was awesome. Keeps them just upright and compact enough to soothe their tummy. I think she slept in it till she was 4 months old!

That's what he is sleeping right now. Just wish I would have asked for the newer model with the auto rock! He sleeps the beSt in the rock in play, with the back part in the up position. :thumbsup

Our doctor said do whatever what makes them sleep, of course no blankets or anything they can stuff in their face into but that helped a lot on their stomach.

Have you checked out the side sleeper it's a thing that wedges the baby on his side that might help.

Sounds like the diet ideas should help. I'd try not using breast milk for a day or two and see how it goes.

I found taking them outside helped. Dark and cold outside...a new environment would just change up their attitude within seconds. My son was difficult as a new baby. I'd take him out for a walk in the dark and he just clammed up and would look around all amazed at everything.

Just some ideas that could help....

Eliminate dairy while breastfeeding.
Probiotics for both mom and baby.
Hold baby upright 30 minutes after eating.
Maybe have baby sleep upright in swing.
Maybe try swaddling.
Massages for baby after bath/before bed.

And last but not least get a diffuser and use lavender at bedtime. It's life changing!

Good luck! -Cassie

You can put your kid on a side or elevate the head a bit.
When we came home from the hospital the nurses have you convinced you need to do it this way. Listen to your parents they know. My kid was crying a lot and we couldn't figure out what was up. My mom and sister kept telling us to give her more formula so we finally listened to them and my kid changed right there. She started sleeping through the night.
Good luck as others have said it gets better.
Btw enjoy each milestone your kid hits because they happen so fast and before you know it you got a toddler.

Something else to think about when you and your wife are at your wits end in the middle of the night, millions of other people have been right where you are and everyone gets through it. Its really tough when you are going through it I know. I lost 8 pounds in about 5 days when we brought our daughter home. I was a complete mess. By month 3 we got to sleep midnight to 6am. Hang in there, it will get better.

I hear ya. I keep telling my wife the same thing. Millions of people go through this with new borns. It just sucks with a work schedule like mine. I wake up at 3:30 am for work. The baby has been in a habit of waking up at 1am, and not going back to sleep until 2:30 or 3. Cuts my sleep down to like 3-4 hours on a work night.

Being that my wife can't breast feed, its almost double duty, because she has to pump then feed the baby. And most of the time he's so fussy she can't do both at the same time.

I know we will get through it.... Just wanted to hear what everyone elses experiences were. I really appreciate it.

One important item that has not been touched on is that babies don't know how to sleep a normal night like you and I might. Contrary to what you might think they have to 'learn' to sleep and that may involve many nights of what you are going through. Babies aren't easy but worth every time investment you spend with them.

I would not place them on their stomach to sleep.

Do you guys turn on the light at night to feed? If so we found no talking to your kid or turning a light on during these feeds so baby knows it's not play time but to go back to sleep.

1. If breast feeding issues try goats milk, this is assuming he's not getting enough nourishment. Lactation issues (moms diet, latching, etc)is #1 cause of unhappy babies. Forget soy or almond they don't provide the fat content and vitamins needed.
2. Burp him properly, burping is caused by aligning his stomach with airway, nothing to do with patting them repeatedly
3. GENTLY rub his lower left intestinal area after feeding.
This will alleviate all gas issues.

I have 3 boys who each had similar issues. After switching to goats milk and learning tricks 2and 3 each boy slept 6 hrs a night and stopped acting like they had colic.
I also believe in having them sleep alongside Mom for the first six months. Babies feels more secure and likelihood of sids drops significantly
Also have him checked by a different pediatrician to rule out deeper issues that may not have been caught.
Good Luck...I remember the sleepless nights well
