Sounds to me like you got a pretty fair shake considering.

So the water leak was found at the base of the ypipe??

That is the assumption. The marine salvage company said the leak wasn't obvious when they pulled it out.
I am satisfied with the amount I received, it is right around where I thought it should be.

Before ripping the engine out you can take the drive off and fill the boat up with 6-12" of water and look up the exhaust boot from the back side. If the base of the ypipe is leaking, you'll see it there.

You'll also be able to see if the transom gasket is leaking at the same time, you'd see water dripping from the lower corners of the transom assembly itself on the outside.

My guess is with the smell that you had, the leak would be at the vertical exhaust boots on the inside of the boat that connects the down pipes to the ypipe.

Yeah I lost a boat on Arrowhead due to a freak set of circumstances - boat lift broke, couldn't get it off the lake because some dolt ran into the trailer and damaged that, so I moved it to an adjacent slip to get the lift fixed, then a weekday storm swamped the boat. Like you did the diligence and pickled the motor, replaced the electric stuff, re-did the upholstery and got a little money from the insurance to defray the costs. Got it all fixed up and put it back on the lake in successive years which were all trouble-free.

Only thing keeping it from going down to Davey Jones locker was some pretty strong dock lines that were taut as could be. Of course Arrowhead would have made me raise it, so it still being tied to the dock was a money saver.
