My God that's a lot of tie wire:oops:

On those unions, are those couplers riveted, or swedged? Never seen that stuff before.

Yes NDOT specification is a subterranean cage needs to be tie wired 50% with a tie each direction. Basically every other intersection has to be tied twice. To put it into perspective you're basically tying every single intersection between the hoops and vertical rebar. There's probably close to 1 thousand pounds of tie wire on a cage.

The couplers used are called zap-lok, this is our first time using this coupler, we typically use Dayton. Each of those bolts have a spike on the end that digs into the bar. We use a 1" pneumatic gun and rattle the bolts until the head snaps off. One single coupler weighs 79lbs, and is almost 30" long.

Here ya go monkey, this explains it.

Haveing been an Operating Engineer for ovver 20 years (Local 12) and run smaller cranes I have to say there is a great deal of responsibility on the operators of these rigs, not only the cost of a failure but loss of life, much respect to them!
Thanks for the pics

Nordie, thanks for sharing. How many yards of concrete will that hole take and do you send men down to make sure the cage stays centered in the tube before the pour??
thanks

We just tie the rebar, but on the sides of the cage are what I like to call spacers. When the cage gets sunk those spacers pretty much center the cage.

I wish I had an answer for yards, but it's definitely a good amount. The shaft is 9ft in diameter, and that cage is 99ft long, but they don't pour all 99ft, as there will be a column that sits inside of it. I hope this helps...

Interesting that they chose to pick over the front.

I flew another one out tonight, when I was loading the bird noticed this would a cool shot to contribute to the thread
Sorry that someone needed you guys, and a flight out...honestly, as boring as it would make your job, I always want you all to have nothing to do.

Bitchen shot though, amazing stuff at some of jobs on this site!

Thanks man, it honestly was a mellow call. There aren't very many resources out here so anyone needing specialty care gets flown to Vegas, phoenix or palm springs

Bitter sweet end of the 3 phases that I did for Centennial Bowl. We had quite the feat, #1 we made the longest box girder bridge in the state of Nevada. Overall between the 3 projects we placed 10,000 tons of rebar. I'm a little sad that it's pretty much over, but it's been a fun ride.

It's going to take a couple posts, but a photo dump.
