Ok, makes sense now. If power goes out, the get away vehicle could be locked in the garage.

Upon further review, the back up battery does make sense.

As always, RDP delivers.

If I was in fear of my life and thought my house might burn down...at age 38 or even 83, I likely would not be too concerned with the condition of my garage door after backing my car through it to GTFO.

In summary, some people are stupid.

Installed my garage door opener yesterday. I had to add a new outlet for the wall mount opener, so I didn’t have to run it off an extension cord, and finished that this morning.

I ended up getting the model with battery backup as the non battery model was on backorder and would have taken too long to get. The Home Depot in Havasu had the battery backup model in stock. My local Home Depots do not even carry this opener anyway, so I still had to smuggle it in.

This was pretty easy to install, and the opener is really compact. It also comes with a garage deadbolt, cable tension sensor, and built in WiFi and home automation capability.

Only caveat is you just have to be careful when you do use the emergency release, if you don’t have it completely released as you move the door, it will unwind the cable from the drums and can render the garage inoperable unless you rewind the cables on the drums. given that, with a wall mount opener the battery backup is a nice feature to have.

If you were licensed in 3 states, you would have put the outlet in the appropriate bay such that the cord did not have to run over a stud.

I cary no such licensing :) I was thinking of hard wiring it, apparently that is code in some areas, but this is much easier for servicing.

I actually needed a plug there anyway for my drill press and sander, which are just out of the frame, so this worked out.

@SHOCKtheMONKEY wired my garage, so I just copied what he did using the same parts and added another plug to the end of that circuit.

My 88 year old mother lives about 1/2 mile from us as the crow flies.
We have lived through wildfires since 1980.
My wife and I were in Tennessee a few years ago when the Lobo Fire took off.
The power went out and after I explained to her at 3am, on my cell phone from Knoxville, Tn, what to do my Mom was able to pull the red rope, at which time the door opened up. She drove out as flames were crossing the paved road about 1/2 mile from her home. Now, during fire season, she leaves her car parked near the front door, ready to go.
If you have older folks in your life you care about it is wise to make sure they know the best ways out, where to go, who to call once they are in a safe place. Do it now.
We are both well insured; my wife is in the business.
I admit, I look forward to our move, there will be a much diminished chance of wildfire where we are going.
18 months...maybe less if things go well.

Yep. I just went through this. I needed a garage door opener. Didn’t want all the battery backup. Had it delivered to my folks in Colorado. Then I had him ship it down to me in havasu.
