Depending on the diagnosis try VetCBD oil.
https://vetcbd.com/ It’s only available at dispensaries - the one in Needles sells it. Use the online locator or Weed Maps.

I have used it for many years on Chloe. She started having seizures and other issues and I put her on it and she’s doing amazing. You need to start out the dosages small to get them used to it or else they throw it up. But it’s so easy to administer. She screams for her 2x daily doses. They also carry a higher dosage for more extreme issues and even for hospice care. Don’t buy the ones at the pet store etc. you need the tiny bit of THC which this one has. It does NOT get them high. Feel better soon Sasha!

I will try that

Always sucks when they are feeling good and getting up there in age, just went through that turned out to be nothing more than 800 bucks from my wallet. Hopefully Sasha is fine.

Well we ended up coming to Phoenix because there is a high end specialty vet here. They ran all the tests last night and basically said she could go at any moment. She has cancer in her lungs, a mass on her heart and another mass somewhere else thst is bleeding internally. When that mass finishes rupturing she will pass.

They wanted me to put her down last night, I decided to take her home And let her spend another day or two with the kids and family. I’m going to see if there is someone that will come to the house and do it.

Same type of thing happened to my dog in May, came on quickly. Did not see it coming til the end. Older dog as well. Never easy to put a best friend down. Only peace for me came from knowing he he had a good life and is now in a better place. My heart goes out to your family.

Sad deal, sorry! Had a dog with lung cancer and all kind of issues show up. He was only six years old. Some vets will do house calls, mostly ones who do cattle and horses. My vet will do house calls, but its pricey.

Very sorry to hear the news on your dog. When the time came to put our fantastic dog down we called her local Havasu Vet. They said they were very busy and could see us in about 10 days. Un friggin' believable. I next called McGuire on Maricopa. We had never been to that Vet. They were extremely professional, compassionate and understanding. Our dog was also large, a giant breed Newfoundland. Not a day goes by that we don't think of her.

Jeez Dave sorry to hear that. One of the hardest things to deal with. We lost our Roxy last year after battling cancer for a year.We let her go knowing it was the best thing we could do for her. Hang in there it will get better in time and just know you gave her the best years of her life when you rescued her.

Sorry to hear RD. There are services that will come to your home. I had to put our Spike down a couple months ago. He basically couldn't breath anymore because of an enlarged heart. Its a tough decision but you don't want them to suffer.

Once again, I'm really sorry. They are not like family, they are family.

Sorry for your unfortunate predicament. most of my pets have died naturally at home, but if I had to put one down I would find a vet to do it at Home with dog laying on his own bed.

Time to spoil her more than ever. Give Sasha a cheeseburger from me. I'm sorry y'all are going through this. Having to let a beloved dog go is one of the hardest things I've done.

Sorry to hear. Had to put down my lab a couple summers ago and it was tough especially when it comes on fast.

I hate this is happening, especially for your kids. There's nothing I can say to make it less painful, and I'm sorry for that.

Sorry to hear Dave.
I've heard if you do this at home it can kind of freak the kids out in regards to the spot where it takes place if they're around.
Just something to keep in mind.
Best wishes to you and your family in this difficult time.

I think they will be ok. Honestly I think a large part of the problem of our society now s we aren’t accustomed to the circle of life. We buy our food and don’t learn where it comes from.. when our loved ones die they are whisked away by the authorities.

No more wakes.. no more digging the grave etc..

I personally believe that because we as Americans aren’t exposed to it at all it makes dealing with death a lot more traumatic than it used to be, or what it might be in other cultures.

I gave that a lot of thought when my dad passed away.. In retrospect I was happy that he passed away more or less in front of me, and I got to spend sometime saying good bye on that sidewalk as crazy as that sounds.

I am devastated with what is happening, but she is a large dog and we believe she’s about 12 years old (they said she was about three when I adopted her). I knew the day was coming at some point. Even though you know though, you don’t ever think it’s going to be “today.”

With the Covid fears going on they won’t let anyone inside the local vet that we typically use. I can’t bring myself to take her there and just send her inside to die with strange people she has never met.

Last night when I picked her up from the specialist that was as afraid as I have ever seen her.. you could see it in her eyes and she practically dragged me out of there as soon as I got the leash on her. (She doesn’t pull on leashes). I think we owe her more than than to just drop her off.

As I wrote above everything is internal.. She has internal bleeding so she is drinking buckets of water and peeing a lot. She is kinda lazy and she is panting a lot of she has any exertion or gets hot (more than normal). The only other thing is she isn’t really having any bowel movements (concerning).

I am torn between calling someone to come to the house and put her down (when she doesn’t really look that bad) or just letting her live out the short remainder of her life until the mass bursts.

The specialist called me this morning and was kinda surprised she survived the night and had doubts she would make the journey home to Havasu.

She seemed pretty normal to me though in the car and enjoyed her cheeseburger on the way home.
Tonight she had chicken and mashed potatoes with gravy for dinner.. Then she got about half my chicken (I’m not really feeling like eating right now).

The practical side of me is concerned with, when she does pass I’m not entirely sure how I’m going to get her out of my house. When Stacy’s pug passed he was exceptionally heavy (there is a reason it’s called “dead weight”) and he didn’t weigh more than 25/30 pds?

Sasha weighs 117-120’ish pds depending on the day and I’m crippled.. It isn’t the kind of thing that you call your friends for, to help you move your deceased dog. (See above as Americans we don’t really deal with the circle of life well).. and the other part that is concerning like I said above is she isn’t having bowel movements. Meaning that could get quite messy, at the time of passing or at the time of moving the body.

I’m just kinda figuring it out as we go here, and will have to make some hard decisions here in the near future.

Today even though she’s not a 100% she was extremely happy to be with her kids and to be home.

Stacy and the kids took her for a walk at the hotel this am, and the second pic was taken a few minutes ago as she is laying next to me on the tile (cool tile is the only time she isn’t panting now)

To give you an idea of how big this dog is.. she barely fit in the front seat of my dually on the way to the vet the other day. She was struggling with sitting on it.

Dave...

We went down a similar road many years ago with one of our dogs, reading your explanation of the problems brought back memories.
With that in mind I was moved to say get a Vet to the house and have them help her to pass, don't put her or your family through the trial of watching her last moments.
It isn't pretty. That is all I will say.
We didn't have the option when we went through this, and I sure as heck would have eased his passing knowing what I know now.
We are down to one Shih-Zu now, Cindy's girl. She goes to work with Cindy every day and is an incredibly good dog, the 3rd of this breed we have had.
I dunno what I will do when we have to cross that bridge.
All the best to you and yours...

Losing a dog is painful for a family and you, the talk about the end-of-life process is hard for kid to understand. All you can do for your dog is hold him, telling him how you love them, petting him, let him know he will be free of pain, not afraid and not alone.
I have a box with clipping of hair, photos, a paw print, collar, leash etc...from my last 3 dogs, it helps.
The death of a pet can be more difficult than the loss of a relative. I was inconsolable for months. I wish you and your family well.

Even though she doesn’t seem to bein any pain? You’d still call them in?

That’s the part I’m struggling with. She seems pretty “alright” given the circumstances.. So I can’t tell if that’s the right choice or not.

That is very true. When I first moved here I lost my pit mix Neva.. It’s weird to say but it hurt me as much as when I lost my dad.. I raised that dog from before she could cross a threshold of a doorway and she spent most of her life by my side.

She was the absolute toughest dog you could imagine.. We took her for a walk down in the channel and something burst inside her and that was the only time I ever saw fear in that dogs eyes. By the next morning the choice was very clear And I think she was ok with it (heartbreaking none the less)

I said I’d never get another dog. The next week I went to the pound out here and found out there was no good dogs in Havasu. The next week I went back to Carlsbad and brought home Sasha.. That’s when I started this thread. (I should pull up the original thread.. lol it was a lot longer and more descript.. I cut it down to the chain link fences and master locks.
I called Sasha my 65.00 dog for years meaning for 70 bucks you could take her home. My little joke to prove (to myself) I wasn’t attached to her I guess..

She ended up a wonderful family member and literally a nanny to my kids. We couldn’t have asked for a better dog to have around for babies and toddlers.. honestly one of the most patient and gentle souls I have ever seen in a K9.

It sucks, but we will get through it.

She isn't going to look too bad until the mass lets go...and then she is going to go through hell in the process of dying, that is what happened to our Cody, a huge Yellow lab that was bonded deeply to our oldest son. We were trying to give him a "good last week"...and then...well he started to go and Chris wasn't here to see it I was very thankful.
He bled from his mouth, his nose...you get the picture my friend.
I am just saying, if I had it to do over again I would not have let him go through that.

I appreciate the advice. I had already planned on calling the phone numbers rvrswpr put in the thread above tomorrow morning to see what the logistics are. Even though it’s the right thing I’m still not sure that I can bring myself to do it. :(

She’s sleeping now.. I’m gonna go out in the garage and put an optic on a gun and drink some beers.. the last couple of days have been rough.

I understand completely, I hear you loud and clear. You guys love the dog, and the dog knows it. IF you didn't love the dog so damn much it would be simpler, but love..well love of a pet is a special thing. Cody had been Christopher's constant companion for 10 years, since he and his sister were dumped down at the bottom of our driveway by some asshole, and we adopted them. That dog ran to the sound of my sons voice every day when Chris called him from a 1/4 mile away, walking home from the bus stop.
He escorted Chris and his friends home. He slept at the foot of Chris' bed in the winter, outside under the bedroom window in the summer.
I know what you are feeling.
Whatever you decide to do, I know it will be the right thing for your family. You are a good man RD.

Damn, that is the hard part. With my daughter's horse (I believe an old west survivor), it was a long time coming. When she looked like she was in pain, it was time to help her along. It's one of those things, you'll know when it's time...and no matter what, it sucks. Sorry you're going through it. I feel bad for your kids, as Sasha has been in their lives majority of their existence.
