My son and couple buddies went to Top Golf last night. 14 year olds.
Playing next to them was some 19 year old, white rapper kid. Lil Mabu. They all hung out and he's got the boys on the list for his show tonight. I've been to the venue. It's known for allowing everyone to smoke dope openly.

He is so excited. But im 100% a hard no fing way. The dad that took them to top golf offered to chaperone and met the kid.

Do I let him go?

At 14, they don’t need that rapper’s influence, nor do they need to be hanging out at a dope-friendly venue. If he were my kid, I’d be wondering about the other family’s influence as well. Why would any father encourage this?

EDIT: Being a parent is sometimes difficult, especially when you need to be a hard ass. Your kid will be upset, but sooner or later he’ll figure it out and appreciate your guidance.

I'm a no for a 14 year old. It would be a wrong environment from the parking lot to the venue and back for a 14 year old. Is this music listened to in your home or car?

These kids are seeing worse at school and on Snapchat daily.

What were you listening to back when you were 14-15 that your parents hated and there parents before that.

Personally I wouldn’t let him go because that kid sucks and has no flow…lol

Yeah. I have some concerns about the other Dad trying to be cool with the boys.
They are all good kids with involved parents. Before top golf they had all spent the afternoon volunteering at a marathon.
My wife's knows the dad better than me. She's going to call him a little later today and see if he even researched this little punks trash music.

Never heard this crap. I control the music listened to in our cars and home.
My daughter looked at his Spotify account and this dude is my sons #2 listened to artist. I had no idea.
He listens on his headphones.

I was more in to Ska and Punk Rock. Some metal and rap at that age.
We went to shows for the pit.
Yes. My folks hated my music.

Never forget I installed my first good stereo at 17. Finally got the subs firing at like 10pm bumping too short and my mom came out of the house slammed her fists on the hood of my car ejected the cd and snapped it…l

Not sure if it was the timeline or the music but I never did that again..haha

If you resist, they’ll push even harder. I’d take them to the show myself. Like the boys said, the shit they watch on the regular will surprise you.
My twins just got there 1st phones this year. No snapchat or Instagram type shit yet. You tube. But we have age filters set up.
At this point. I'm going with them.
Im hoping this other Dad that offered to take them wises up and bails.
If I/we go and the place is a giant dope fest I'll drag his ass out.

Have you asked your son why he wants to waist his time going to see some poser faggot pretend to rap?

My take exactly. Don't make this the forbidden fruit.
I have to agree. I would go with. He will appreciate it and look at you differently. Dare I say maybe even more respect?

Dope! Shoot, I went to a concert when we lived in Kansas and someone offered my wife blow. Lol. She politely declined as she's never even considered trying it. Had he asked me, well might have gone differently, lol I kid! 😆

Edit to add: my dad was a total hardass. It made 2 out of 3 push back harder. The 3rd moved at 17 and never looked back.

Didn't listen to the clip...
I'll have to say, at 12-13 I was playing 2 Live Crew when my parents weren't home, and also Slayer and such. In high school, Cyprus Hill, Too Short as well as metal...loud. I think it's a standing deal, parents mostly won't like kids' music. My Grandma listened to big band, Mom and Pops were Elvis and Johnny Cash. I now listen to all of it. My daughter listens to new stuff I hate, like Taylor Swift crap. My 17yo boy listens to 50s and 60s rock, and my 16yo listens to mostly glam...it's a mess over here.

Do you let them watch the Grammys? It's been equally inappropriate if not worse.
.
Go have fun with your boy if he likes the artist. Perfect time to guide him away from the "evil" goings on in the venue itself.

It’s going to be a dope fest.
Wasn’t it your state that first legalized weed?
There might be some there😂
But that’s going to be true of most any concert. I can’t remember a concert that didn’t have joints passing all over the place?

You’re on the right track taking him if you are going to let him go.
Let him see how that side lives, and who they are. He’s a smart kid. He will recognize the dark path once he sees it with his own eyes.
He already has seen the better path, and has seen his cousin be that respectable teen, and now a Marine.
The dark side. And the light😎

Why? From some of the responses, might as well smoke a splif with him. You don’t want him to rebel, do you?

Dope fest? Shit. I smell it on the freeway at 70 mph in my Peterbilt. That shit is everywhere, all the time. It’s like cigarette smell back in the 80’s. Everywhere. Lead by example dad. There are bad decisions in all things and all places of life. You go with, let them see the fucking degenerates and realize how much better off they are. It’ll be fun, and you’ll have tons of shit talking to do, and a great bonding experience with your kids.

Interesting this comes up though today. My 16yo is currently weedeating the front, and will start around the back today. This is payment for a newer phone. He has not been allowed to have any apps really. He wants Spotify or such. New phone will not be allowed to have snapchat or such. We're a lot more "urban Amish" than some folks. He goes to public schools, only so much I can do to block the stupidity of society.

I guess I'm not so worried about the weed. He knows what it's is. Im just really shocked he's so in to this type of garbage music and is ready to start going to shows.

He could have just said he was staying at his buddies, went to the show and never told me shit. He's a good kid.

Just those f'n pink slippers make it a hard No!
But..
Freshman year in high school, myself and two friends and the biggest stoner at school, senior got tickets to see Rush. None of us drove so one kids parent took us and my Dad picked us up. The three dudes passed out in the back seat and I just looked forward, trying to be cool. Not a word was ever said, but I think I learn a valuable lesson or two. Man I miss my Dad.

Oh I remember those days with a 14 year old, now he is a 29. He was a good kid but the things that were going on with friends at school was a bit much and he hid it well. We were involved parents and knew his friends and family from an early age. Most were safe but the kids could play the game. At this point they know right from wrong or you didn’t do your job.

I had many friends and business acquaintances that we a few years ahead of me with kids. I’d use them to learn what I was up for next. It was in the sophomore year that I took the back seat. Just like others have said the forbidden fruit. You teach them right and wrong and at some point you have to let them make decisions, good or bad.

Depending on where he is in maturity you have a few options. You can be as loose as to let him go alone OR you could attend. Personally I’d probably chose to go as much as I’d hate the scene and music you will be there and able to discuss the experience. After you will be able to use the information to hopefully guide him into a more productive path. Next step could be DD and drop and pick up. You’d have less to discuss but still able to give freedom and discuss those int he parking lot. Last you could just say go and hope for the best.

Personally with the young age I’d go with them and make the best of it. Especially since the connection last night. 👍

The best story our son has was the weekend morning in his senior year that I woke him up early to help me clean the elderly lady’s years that we did once a month. He was out late with friends the night before. Trying to escape responsibility and be a lazy teen. He helped me all while he was a bit hung over.

It was not until he was out of college that he retaliated that I was not going to come down on his for the choices that he makes.

All the more reason to let him go. Saying no may kill that open communication channel he has with you.

He wants it for the cred from the whole story.
No, but maybe offer him and his buddies an alternative.
I’d be pissed as a kid that the story ended with my dad wouldn’t let me go. Too bad

I do have to add, when I was 14 my mom let me go to a concert with two buddies. At I think it was the Shrine auditorium hall.
I saw Sir Douglas quintet, Fleetwood Mac, and Frank Zappa and the Mothers.
Dirty pot smoking hippies everywhere. I’m sure she had no idea.
I never went to prison.😂

Me personally?
Fuck all that.
I’d explain what a serious douchebag this wigger is and disect one of his videos for my kids to see the absolute scumbaggery he represents.
There is no way in hell or on earth I would bow to permitting this foulness in my household to any of my kids, or nowadays, my grandkids.
Fear of their responses would be the last fucking thing on my mind.
My kids and my step kids had no questions about where I stood on shit like this. I’m sure they snuck around and I’m sure they did shit behind my back.
That’s ok. They are parents now and they know now why I was the way I was.

Thinking it’s ok because they see this (and worse) all the time is a cop out.
His second most listened to “artist”???
Oh man I would be dropping the fucking hammer right about now I shit you not!!!😳😳👍👌

We are talking a clockwork orange Led Zepplin session until their eyes bled…it’s the only cure…

Lol what were your favorite artists at 14?
Leonardo DaVinci. Then Rembrandt.
Same as today.

Musicians?
Zeppelin
Sabbath
Bowie
Mott
Never once did I see them fake ass fuck any hogs on stage or in any of their films.
It was clean debauchery.
If you plan on making comparisons all you are going to prove is how far society has deteriorated.
My dad did not like my choices in music.
The only one he questioned morally was Bowie.
I grew up on Merle, Willy, Waylon, pride etc.
hated all that shit.

Ohh the joys of parenting. 😂
He’ll live if he doesn’t go. You said he’s a good kid, he will or eventually understand.
A lot depends on the kids. Who they are and if they are easily influenced.

My first concert was Ozzy and I was 15. The metalheads behind us, the old hippies to the right, and the yuppie couple in front of us, all smoking pot. I never smoked anything or bit the heads off of bats, But I love the music.
I think it’s better that you’re going with him. A good opportunity to be able to talk and relate to him.

You have both ends of the spectrum of advice. I think you guys will be OK either way.
Kids grow up and need therapy anyway. 😁

Take your boy, sit down with his mother and sister and watch the video in the second post together with them and him.
Have him sing the lyrics and act out all the scenes in front of them.
If he is not comfortable with that find out why.

😳

I remember when my dad asked what I was listening to on my Walkman and then put it in the car stereo so he could see what I was listening to. I remember freaking out and it was only Def Leppard Hysteria.
