Playing next to them was some 19 year old, white rapper kid. Lil Mabu. They all hung out and he's got the boys on the list for his show tonight. I've been to the venue. It's known for allowing everyone to smoke dope openly.

He is so excited. But im 100% a hard no fing way. The dad that took them to top golf offered to chaperone and met the kid.

Do I let him go?

EDIT: Being a parent is sometimes difficult, especially when you need to be a hard ass. Your kid will be upset, but sooner or later he’ll figure it out and appreciate your guidance.

At this point. I'm going with them.

I'll have to say, at 12-13 I was playing 2 Live Crew when my parents weren't home, and also Slayer and such. In high school, Cyprus Hill, Too Short as well as metal...loud. I think it's a standing deal, parents mostly won't like kids' music. My Grandma listened to big band, Mom and Pops were Elvis and Johnny Cash. I now listen to all of it. My daughter listens to new stuff I hate, like Taylor Swift crap. My 17yo boy listens to 50s and 60s rock, and my 16yo listens to mostly glam...it's a mess over here.

Freshman year in high school,myself and two friends and the biggest stoner at school, senior got tickets to see Rush. None of us drove so one kids parent took us and my Dad picked us up. The three dudes passed out in the back seat and I just looked forward, trying to be cool. Not a word was ever said, but I think I learn a valuable lesson or two. Man I miss my Dad.

Oh I remember those days with a 14 year old, now he is a 29. He was a good kid but the things that were going on with friends at school was a bit much and he hid it well. We were involved parents and knew his friends and family from an early age. Most were safe but the kids could play the game. At this point they know right from wrong or you didn’t do your job.

I had many friends and business acquaintances that we a few years ahead of me with kids. I’d use them to learn what I was up for next. It was in the sophomore year that I took the back seat. Just like others have said the forbidden fruit. You teach them right and wrong and at some point you have to let them make decisions, good or bad.

Depending on where he is in maturity you have a few options. You can be as loose as to let him go alone OR you could attend. Personally I’d probably chose to go as much as I’d hate the scene and music you will be there and able to discuss the experience. After you will be able to use the information to hopefully guide him into a more productive path. Next step could be DD and drop and pick up. You’d have less to discuss but still able to give freedom and discuss those int he parking lot. Last you could just say go and hope for the best.

Personally with the young age I’d go with them and make the best of it. Especially since the connection last night.


The best story our son has was the weekend morning in his senior year that I woke him up early to help me clean the elderly lady’s years that we did once a month. He was out late with friends the night before. Trying to escape responsibility and be a lazy teen. He helped me all while he was a bit hung over.

It was not until he was out of college that he retaliated that I was not going to come down on his for the choices that he makes.

Ohh the joys of parenting.
He’ll live if he doesn’t go. You said he’s a good kid, he will or eventually understand.
A lot depends on the kids. Who they are and if they are easily influenced.

My first concert was Ozzy and I was 15. The metalheads behind us, the old hippies to the right, and the yuppie couple in front of us, all smoking pot. I never smoked anything or bit the heads off of bats, But I love the music.
I think it’s better that you’re going with him. A good opportunity to be able to talk and relate to him.

You have both ends of the spectrum of advice. I think you guys will be OK either way.

I remember when my dad asked what I was listening to on my Walkman and then put it in the car stereo so he could see what I was listening to. I remember freaking out and it was only Def Leppard Hysteria.
