Yeah, I think it has a lot to do with what clientele the company goes after. Residential and Refrigeration have tons of OT needs as well as other climate critical businesses like hospitals and such. That is why determining what kind of clientele the company has and what they expect you to work on makes a HUGE difference.

When I was with Source as a remote tech out of Paso Robles, I made good money but it came with a shit ton of OT at all hours of the day and night. If I was single, or didnt have the young kids, I would have stuck around with them longer and racked it in. Easily could have been DEEP into the $100k+ range by now. But it would have came at a tremendous cost to my family.

Right now, my company really isn't working our techs more than 10 hours of OT a week and only 1 on-call week and weekend a month, assuming they arent a chiller tech. Those are in even shorter supply, make even more money, and can almost work as much OT as they would like.
100%. The younger guys usually vent how much their wife or gf are complaining. We just tell the new girls at the Christmas party to pretend like you are on your own. Live off the 40 and save the OT for a rainy day. I have gone to many parties solo because when a Costco calls that their cases aren’t working, there’s no debate on waiting until the next day. All our river and desert trips are scheduled in December as soon as I get the on call schedule from him.

He has one on call weekend and one weekday a week. They haven’t capped OT as they are short on guys. Even had to help out the non mechanical side in the last month on night jobs. He has been on call a few thanksgiving and Christmas in the last years, but we don’t have kids, and it’s hard to miss out on double pay…

The money is good, but it does destroy a body pretty quickly. He’s 34, I can’t imagine him doing this in 10+ years. I think that scares off a lot of the younger guys from getting in the field. Who wants to sign up to work in 110* on a roof in Palm Springs?

So you clearly had a job offered to you, but you didn't like the starting pay.
WTF, why come on here bitching, lower your pay expectations and start at a new job.

He isn't bitching...

He's just posting his resume. Duh!

😁

This is the second thread that I am reading your posts and thinking “what in the fuck?”
Not trying to be negative but the guy had a job offer.
Take the offer and keep looking in the mean time if it's not 100% what you want.

Man, I'm sorry for your situation. I can see how there are tons of job posting but no responses. Our internal HR process uses Workday which manages the lifecycle of all thing employee related, from requisition creation and definition to recruitment, offer, on-boarding, salary planning, APB, stock grants, raises and all the way to termination. The job requisition terminology may not match the kind of person you really want to hire in order to get it approved. Once approved and opened that job description gets loaded and presented for recruitment, in response a hiring manager can get hundreds of resumes that they have to sort through which they know probably doesn't match what they want. Workday has a "Reject All" feature. Once a job requisition has been opened and not filled past a certain time period it gets bumped up in priority and third party recruiters bring in their own candidates, basically resume pickers, which again gets the "Reject All" treatment but justification needs to be added. The bottom line is very few senior jobs are placed using the talent acquisition systems. Real candidates are found by proximity, a candidate finds you or you find the candidate by who you know. A proximity candidate has a shorter interview cycle, comes in at a higher level with higher pay, bigger bonus and more stock grants. Find the best companies to work for, the departments they may have that are aligned with your position and see if you can find some contacts there. Perhaps LinkedIn or other professional organizations can get you close.

Just an fyi, I know nothing about the thread starter but what was posted, all I wanted to post is how some potential employers could look at it, nothing more nothing less.
When I speak about break in employment this is a true story of one of my employees, 30ish years ago a local company shut down noon on a Friday. One of the guys laid off was in my building filling out an application that Friday at 1pm
I hired him on the spot and had a great employee for 25 plus years.
In my mind he was a go getter and refused to collect unemployment
Thanks for posting. Say hello to your good friend for the many of us that enjoyed his content here. Hope that serious fire is well into his past. 👍

Then double down then triple down now this.. Jesus dude..

While I can understand the taken anything over nothing attitude, you truly aren’t reading the thread for what it is..

It isn’t him begging for a job etc.. he is talking about the state of things, and giving. Cautionary advice to the “I might just quit” crowd..

The thread itself is incredibly informative right up until we get to this “take it or leave it.”

I have learned more about upper management in corporate America and how hard it actually is to find a job in the last 20 minutes than the last 20 years..

Granted I’m like white works only worse.. I don’t think I could ever work for someone, I just go find ways to make money.

Well, this post here can have some totally different meaning...

"Friend also had his boss clipped last Monday out of nowhere."

Ya'll are mostly clean cut types. My mind went straight "Goodfellas" 🤣

(Have to add some levity...getting a bit tense in some ways;))
We might have the same friends😬

one option that a good friend of mine did when the board ousted him for younger “talent”😂 he took six months off to refocus he’s direction then went back after it in a whole different direction and it has turned into a positive outcome for him.

He basically had like a two year pay deal when ousted so he said six months for me then six month trying to get another job after that I am buying a company or franchise. Right at 11 months the phone started blowing up and now he is just doing 1099 consulting work and is saving everything he can to buy something better if his consulting work dries up.
He says he loves being his own boss and most of all his top billable client is his old company😂 it is his most rewarding career ever, according to him.

the point of my post is maybe try something outside the box in your field of expertise. 🤞

@Tremor Therapy

All kidding aside...

I have a friend who Totally dumbed down her resume, and she ended up getting hired right away.

After she had been there awhile, and they figured out she knew Way more than she said she did, they always asked...

How do you know all this stuff???

At that point she would explain how she used to own her Own company, that got bought out by an even bigger one.

She just started a 100 percent work from home job with a world wide corporation. They NEEDED the skill set she has!!!

And now They are starting realize, she knows even more than she let on she did, and they are loving the work that she does.

Why am I saying all this?

Sometimes it's better to NOT put on a job resume, how over qualified you are.

That is all. Oh and, good luck! 🤞

I think there is definitely truth to this. It goes along with what another post shared about the higher level jobs not being filled through regular job postings.
A guy that worked for one of our customers told me how he couldn't get an interview for a job at the level he wanted. He applied to the same company for a lower level job. Got an interview, and during the interview he was able to make enough of an impression and show that he was over qualified for the lower level position he was interviewing for. He ended up getting interviewed for the higher level job and got it after all. Sometimes aiming low seems to work. The old 1 step back to take 2 steps forward.

Less pay? I think highly over paid..
Well less pay than corporate jobs, but as your benefits are usually/mostly employer paid, if you mathed it out to a salary where you paid your own benefits the job pay would be closer to the private sector.

Overpaid is debatable, depends on what’s being done and how it’s being done/managed. I’m government but we run our department as much like a business as we can (including quarterly employee performance evals and an end of year eval) along with an eval of what we accomplished in those timeframes. Union is pretty toothless here.

Oh I’m sure there’s excellent examples of govt jobs that should probably be equivalent to fast food workers in pay considering speed, performance and accuracy of the job performed is comparable to that of fast food (read: DMV).

We are normally exempt from the ups and downs of the economy but this time is different. Lots of people getting laid off in our trades. They are constantly walking In my doors. We have been fortunate enough to collect some really talented people due to this and cut low performers.

There are guys out there thinking it’s 20/20 and asking for huge sign on bonuses and special pay plans…..I laugh at them. Most end up taking the position with us.

I have no doubt the job market is tough.

The only thing that caught my eye was the Resume and Cover Letter written by industry experts.

If your getting interviews then you’re good. If you aren’t getting the interviews. I’d suggest doing an individual resume for each position applied for. Highlight your strength for that position and don’t let them get lost in a one size fits all resume.

Because most of them use AI to screen the resumes, you HAVE to use words from the job description in your resume. It's so time consuming to do this for both a resume and cover letter and then you just get ghosted or a "no thank you." I was applying for 3-5 jobs a week before I got this one. Almost all paying less than I made as a teacher (which wasn't much) and I have earned a master's since I "retired" from teaching. I am just now making the same as I was 4 years ago. I don't love my job. It's a job. I'm learning a lot about grant administration, but I'm not passionate about these particular grants. Also, people from the east coast are not the same as me. Plus, they are fed workers on the east coast, so they are REALLY different than me. There are only conversations about work, which is not exciting. Even when I traveled back east to both DC and Baltimore for several days and we had some dinners and events in person, I realized that they don't really want to know anything about me. You know how you talk about your kids, places you've traveled or your hobbies . . . nope. None of that. All very superficial stuff. Any inquiry for details ends the conversation. And I worked with the public and teenagers for 35 years, I can talk to anyone about nearly anything. This is totally foreign to me. Anyway, I'm hoping to parlay this into a position at the BLM, NPS, or USFS managing grants, but those jobs are few and far between and not usually open to my employment classification. Plus, I'm a temporary employee and my contract is done in June. So I'm a tad nervous . . . and looking.
This is a seriously accurate statement..... "Agism" is actually a term broadly used in corp speak currently. I loved working as I got into my best years ~45-60 but definitely felt interviews/ opptys slipping past my grasp once I got to face to face staged interviews later in career. I had some younger friends in the HR world insisting I die my hair to appear younger. I could tell times had changed... or at least I had changed in age more accurately.

I'd love to let my hair go naturally silver, but I feel like I can't until I get a permanent position somewhere. Age is a problem. I have 10-15 years left of work, but it's not viewed that way to employers. You'd think life experience would be valued over whatever a 25-30 year old has.
I place way to much value on my time, most of its not for sale. Gonna run it hard and have the time of my life until the wheels start to fall off and then pull the plug. I have some pretty epic mentors who have done quite well for themselves, my key take away has been that they all traded too much time for money early on while they were in their prime. That’s the only constant gripe I’ve heard from any of them.

That barber gig is like 2000 hours to get behind the chair then it’s 10 hours on your feet all day everyday. Kinda like digging a hole, it’s not complicated but it’s a lot of work😂

The barbers here work 3-4 days a week 9-5 and there is a non-stop line of customers.

You can go on line and see what these highly overpaid city , state , fed employees are getting paid .

I never heard a state city or fed employee crying about there pay

Let’s just look at few examples
HB fire captain 450 k a year ?
HB police 230.-250 ?
Newport life guard 350?

All I’m saying thats damn good living
And yet 20-25 years in they can retire and get another state job and collect two pensions
On the tax payers dime.

Why California is trillions in debt with unfunded
Pension plans .
Look at the numbers
Promises were made to these public unions on the backs of all tax payers including there own .

Good for them though. They were all a lot smarter than I am .

Maybe life and safety employees have better unions negotiating pay increases?

I know our Union sucks balls, consequently I’m no where near that pay scale.

I look at it this way
Any fed state or city employee Works for
“We the People “
In my 41 years of voting . I never voted for anyone to get a pay increase .
But every year , every state city of fed employees get raises .
I’m sure when everything was locked down , most of the same employees, werd still getting paid . While us business owners got closed down or lock down . Or went out of business . With out a care in the world from said government.

Anyways good luck to the original job seeker
Cheers

I hate most bureaucrats, but anyone that has an ounce of sense and some work ethic would be a welcome change in a government job. Maybe best not to judge those RDP members who are fighting the good fight in a public service job, we need more of them.

Anyone that thinks they are gonna jump the line and drink from the public trough needs a reality check, they have gamed the system to keep high performers out. Be patient if you want a Govt job me thinks.

@whiteworks I paid the last visit to my barber this afternoon, he closes shop next week. Spent my time in the chair talking about the barber business. Even in this digital age a significant portion of his customers pay in cash. There is no sign in sheet, no reservations, no record of how many hair cuts, he keeps a notepad for those of us that don't trade in plastic. He was open three days a week.

The price swings widely. Single mom pays way less than a local for a kids hair cut, if he don't know you; or you complain you pay double. Prices are not posted.

$15K for barber school, six months invested. The start up costs have to be pretty light, I don't see a lot of TI needs or power. Overhead seems low.

The guy before me was a regular that saw him every week, he pulled a $100 bill out and threw it on the table, he said next Tuesday he was bringing back a bottle of bourbon and some cigars to help close down the shop. My barber aspirations are not financial, I think it would be fun to have those type of connections with the community. FWIW my barber was also Howie Long's barber. That perfect flat top was his work. Howie has to find a new Barber also. LOL

Not actually true. I didn’t get a raise this year. Every once in awhile we get a COLA increase, but I can tell you I might be making more than years past, but the inflation increase was higher than my pay increase so it looks good on paper, but in reality I’m making less.

I know that won’t help you, and won’t change your mind, but it’s not quite as cut and dry as you are generalising. Carry on.

It’s not the greatest place as the company isn’t scared to openly admit they hate us, however the BNSF is hiring all over for conductor trainee, which after 13 weeks your a conductor. In Needles the average pay is probably 120 and some that are hardcore or just don’t love their family are pulling close to 200k

I think we are all getting screwed over . By our great politicians . Who can care less about the American people .

as you and everyone else can tell. I’m not a huge fan of our government. Any part of it .
At 55 I almost lost everything . Lost a huge nest egg and my plan for the rest of my life .
While I seen people in government , just go about there business . Then come into our business and fine and threat me with all kinds of
Bullshit .

No matter , what side you’re on . I’m very anti government . At this point in my life. My don’t tread on me flag flys proudly at my house .
Other than that I’m actually a dude. That enjoys whatever life I have left.
With my family and good friends .
Cheers, Bob

I say good luck to anyone seeking employment.

Maybe some, should try to go out on their own.

Or learn something new , for less pay . Then move on ?

I think things are going to get worse .

Sorry for fucking up the op thread .
I’ll move on .

LOL, dude was offered a job that makes a year's salary less than the average pay. I'm thinking this would be a pay cut in a big way.

any port in a storm

i know it may sound like doing the right thing but hiring managers will also use this against you. if you are overqualified and been on the sidelines for a spell, they know THIS job is not your goal and you WILL continue to apply elsewhere. as soon as plan A pops up you will look like the south side of north flying goose :)
they may decide that is a risk the company does not want to invest in.
just my little 2% of a buck

My cousin quit playing baseball his sophmotr year of highschool, he was a stand out player his entire life, came back to school in the fall and everyone was 6’ and had a beard, his old man was 5’9”, it wasn’t in the genes to go pro as he had planned as a child LOL. Graduated highschool and told his folks I’m not going to college, went to barber school and the day he graduated his barber opened up another chair for him to take walk ins. Few months in he was booked solid and has been for the last decade. These dudes make bank, $100.00 an hour with a tip is clockwork, lots of cash as well. If they need money they will put in 10 hour days and work 6 days a week. They are located in south Orange County, so there is no shortage of clientele for them. Those dudes are all good at cutting hair and doing shaves, but where they really shine is they can talk about anything with anyone, all day long. The conversation changes every 30 minutes. They dress nice, don’t get dirty, and enjoy the shop atmosphere they have created. Not a bad gig and with a little common sense in the begining a good quality of life in that trade.

Was talking with a friend today who has an offer in on a $3.5M pad, he has the cash flow currently to cover the nut, what could go wrong? LOL

I work primarily with acquisitions within our global business. As a result I get to see some interesting things behind the curtain of what our company thinks are successful businesses, at least successful enough to purchase. Service businesses seem a lower barrier to entry, and I'm always looking for an opportunity. The barber thing is very interesting to me because it's an overlooked service. Kind of like a laundromat.

Maybe this helps someone who invested in a career and finds themselves unable to get an interview. I was in that same boat in the late 2000's when my Plumbing construction business took a crap and I had to get back in the ditch. I climbed out of it once, I could do it again.

The best performing acquisitions have a few things in common, but the one of value for this discussion is that they started life as a service company and turned into a manufacturing company. Whatever service that might have been, they built cash flow and a reputation for solving problems and then they looked for common issues and started building a standard product to solve whatever that issue was. Because they were a service company, they had the people in place for post sale support. They then refined the product and built at scale. Then we buy them, and the founders take the money and run.

I share this because like others, I created something from nothing when I could not find a job. I loved offroading so I figured if I was gonna be broke, I better at least enjoy what I'm doing being broke. I made a shit ton of mistakes, but in the end I got what I wanted from the experience, sold my share and invested in the next thing until I found a job that looked interesting, which is where I am today. BTW I started this career in a low paying entry level position and worked back into a decent wage and role.

The down side is that I had to trade 10 years to rebuild my personal brand.

We had a decent run of a good economy, now it looks like we may see who is good at what they do and can hustle. There is always opportunity in every cycle, you just gotta find them.

Tell me about it,all my life. Drove a Street SWEEPER over 50 years. Best part of it my wife and i own the Street Sweeper Trucks.
. . . and the meaning for yet another screen name is revealed. Always kind of thought it meant River SWAPPER 😳😁.

OK, back to your regularly scheduled program, I have nothing to add.

I agree with the original poster on so many levels, along with many others. I have been applying for jobs that interest me, mostly at a lower level than my positions in the past. With my work ethic, I can rise to the top quickly... I am also in a good position and am not going to be seriously looking until the start of next year. I am taking some long-earned and needed time off to travel and spend time with family!

Who is going to get me in with a government job? I know that you have to know someone to get your foot in the door!

My phone used to ring 2-3 times a week (exec search firms and/or direct company recruiters) asking if I would review a Chief Audit Exec position. That stopped around January 2024. I get maybe 1 call a month now.

When they called, and if I was interested in moving forward, the first conversation was about salary range. I would explain, I don’t expect you to match my current comp plan, since I am in sales and have base, OT, bonus and commission. But, I would like to take my last CAE salary and bonus and use that as a starting point. 80% could not even get to those numbers and my last CAE position was in 2014.

Talked to a few mentors (C level folks) and all stated, across the board companies are trying to lower comp plans and salary expenses. They got out of control over the last 5 years and everyone is trying to lower the exposure.

I did external/internal audit for 15+ years, pivoted to software sales (sales engineer) and have enjoyed that for 10 years now. I am starting my process of what is next and I will most likely pivot again and go into software strategy next, if I do need to move.

I will say a 50yo white boy does not get a ton of looks these days. With all the DEI stuff starting to change at companies, I am hoping expericne over other factors will get back into hiring again.

Exactly why I click the "Hispanic" button when filling out the diversity section.

An update for those following along......just accepted a temp job for a 2-month project that starts this Thursday. Yes, it is an hourly 1099 position so I will have to deal with all the tax BS later. They know I am looking for a permanent job, and we updated the contract so I can interview as needed (clock in/clock out, get paid for when I work).

DWRAT....I heard you loud and clear when you said take the job, but I know what I am worth. In the first 9 days of this temp job I will earn more than what the other job would have paid for the past 10 weeks. The best part is they are open to extend if I don't have a job at the end of the contract (and it could turn into a real gig depending on ownership and the economy).

xtrmwakeboarder, thanks for the good vibes. Just finished my call with the Anduril recruiter, and he is moving me onto the next steps! Fingers crossed baby!

I would say 99% of them ask ethnicity, veteran status, and disability. I am of hispanic background (6th generation from San Diego) so I check that box. I am not a veteran, and I don't have a disability.....so who knows what the HR people are seeing.
Are you still in San Diego? If so, PM me. I may be able to help.

Congrats on finding something.
In all fairness you never posted that your first job offer was a temp position (or maybe you did and I didn't see it). My bad.
In the future if you really want to get your application seen, accidentally check the box that's says your black. (I'm kinda trying to be funny but I am also 100% serious).
Anyways, I am sorry I came across like an ass and I do apologize.
I wish you well.

The problem with that is that consumer expenses (rent, commodities, etc) also got out of control, and they're not coming back down. A friend of mine just moved and rented out their shitty 820 sq ft 2/1 house in North Long Beach for $3300/month. That's insane to me. Folks aren't going to be able to take jobs at lower wages because they won't be able to afford to live. If I was still a W2 employee, I couldn't afford to sell my house and buy one half as good because with current interest rates and a new tax base, that half a house would cost more than my current house, so it defeats the purpose. I also couldn't afford to rent something at $4000/month. I'm lucky that I'm not in that situation....but feel for those who are. It's all just kinda fucked.

100% agree with that. Housing is out of control.
House across street sold for 1.42 and the new owners are putting 300 more into updates.
The house next to that is pending at 1.83.

I have ZERO idea how folks are doing it. I am old school, mortgage is 25% of take home.

You didn’t see it. It was a temp job for three months. May not have been in the initial post but he did explain that at some point while you were still berating him.

Your mortgage is 25% of your income. Their mortgage is probably 50% of each of their income, if it's a couple. So 4 times the amount of yours.
