yea, I really messed up on mine.

Had beatuiful sod put in, and it was great for a long while. I decided to hire a gardener, and it didnt even dawn on me that he uses the same mower on everyones lawn. So now hes bringing everyones weeds and seeds over to my beautiful lawn. Which now looks like shit (mostly).

Turflon Ester. When I moved into our current house 10 years ago, the previous owner told me he used it. It is expensive, but it works on the invasive grasses. Funny that you post this today, as I just sprayed today. It kills the invasive, but not your regular grass. You can spray your entire lawn and it will only kill the invasive stuff. Or just spot spray.

Shut the water off for a month, and spray weed control.

Update, be sure what ever you uses doesn’t cause an algae bloom in your water front, or kill the wildlife.

Looking at a product called sledgehammer
This is the problem with having a gardner. Buy a mower. You will spend the same time and money trying new product for your new lawn STDs. I have had good luck with fertilome

Looks like Nut Grass to me.

Sledgehammer is your best solution. I've never had good luck with the pre-mixed stuff.

It will be a never ending battle. Put some surfactant and some die in it when you mix and spray so you know exactly what you covered and that is penetrates the nut grass.

Home depot has nutsedge killer by ortho, I have mixed results using it. If you have a lot it's a pain since it's a spray bottle.

I might try this stuff and see how it works.

Edit: Amazon won't send it to you in California. Guess I'll have to wait till I leave my trailer at the river and ship it there🙄

Ive replaced my lawn 3 times in 15 years due to this. The best fix I found was FIRING every gardener. You cant stop it unless you use your own lawn mower, you can temporarily slow it down.

Looks like Nut Sedge, Nut Grass, you can remove a stolen and ypu should have the nuts at the bottom like the picture shows.

I've used Atrazine which is not sold in Ca. works fn great. A more readily herbicide would be Manage, which is specific for Sedge grass.

I have Bermuda turf & most "invasive grass killers" unfortunately will kill my turf too.
My gardener will give it a the right food to grow nice-n-tight & choke off a large % of the shitty stuff.

You guys are free to use whatever you think works on nutsedge but as a former superintendent and someone who works with golf course superintendents every day and also works with fert and chem sales reps and sod farmers l suggest sedgehammer.

Sedgehammer is the best weed control for nutsedge because it attacks it while leaving ornamental plants and other desirable plants alone. It controls yellow nutsedge, purple nutsedge, and broadleaf weeds. Sedgehammer is gentle on turfgrass as it can be used on both cool and warm-season grass.

These also come in convenient individual packets – perfect for those who don’t want to measure or weigh anything aside from the water.

I mix Sedgehammer with Drive XLR8 when fighting late summer nutsedge and crabgrass. They tank mix well and provide a quick burndown visual in less than seven days.

Pros:

  • Contains 75% Halosulfuron – methyl, the best active ingredient for killing nutsedge
  • Controls tubers as well as leaves

this stuff just came up in my sod.... little patches everywhere

I hit it with Ester but no effect...

Crabgrass is a different animal

Quinclorac is the only thing I found that will work on crab... Takes about 2-3 weeks after application

I've tried all the big box store stuff and nothing touched crab except Quinclorac.

My neighbor was a country club greens keeper in Orlando some years ago.. Quinclorac is his go to stuff

Just a little heads up on poa as a weed. In most of California that’s what your putting on at your local muni all the way up to high end country clubs. Even in the desert during the winter the Bermuda grass greens are overseeded with a mixture of seed including Poa triv.

If it Bermuda coming through, get the Bermuda killer from Lowe’s. I put sod down 15 years ago in Santa Clarita. The old F ing Bermuda still comes up every summer like a cancer. But your looks more like sledge. Try sledgehammer

Bermuda yes poa no. Poa is not easy to manage and extremely sustainable to disease and heat stress. It typical produces a very shallow root even in ideal soil conditions. So next time you complain about greens conditions just know it’s not the easiest grass to manage especially grown at .115 and lower. My favorite thing to hear as a super was “you should come see my lawn it looks great” my response “sure but have you tried managing 100 acres of turf with people playing bumper cars on it every day?”

If you have a gardener, they mow all sorts of grass and that is how it can be spread. Pre-emergent is good but too late for this year. More of a late Jan early Feb application.

My new neighbor stopped me while I was in my yard and commented how nice my yard and grass are and who is the gardener I use. I said I do it myself and pointed out all the neighbors fucked up lawns that use gardeners and explained it all. Pretty funny shit. She takes care of her own lawn after that talk 😂
Caring for lawns are easy as long as you properly fertilize etc.

Few questions. First time using Drive and Sedgehammer, thanks for suggesting mixing together, that was how I found this page. I have the small package of Sedgehammer and large bottle of Drive. I planned to use MSO and blue dye. Do you broadcast spray or spot spray? Do you know off hand how much Drive you use? I have read so many different answers! I have Bermuda and I’m outside of Austin. I redid my yard and reseeded and whoa! It set the crabgrass free! On a corner lot and strip of grass next to the street is like all crab grass, seriously. I was pulling up big clumps and then I’d shake the dirt off to refill the hole. An HOA gardener stopped me and said STOP SHAKING IT! He said I was literally reseeding crab grass. Is that true? I stopped but nut grass had a NUT so confused how I was reseeding but not worth the risk. Didn’t matter because I have more than ever! So decided to go the herbicide route. I have to go out in middle of night to get below 85 for the Drive but I’m a night owl so it’s fine, hope I can see the blue dye though. lol
Thanks for any help!

Watch You Tube videos on Sledgehammer and Drive. It will help. Be careful because some lawns you can’t use it on. I spot spray because I don’t have much crabgrass. Don’t shake it when pulling it.
I ended up having a shit ton of clover in my lawn this year, which is tall fescue so I had to use tenacity and a surfactant, which worked really well. Big mistake was using that blue dye because first off you could barely see it and second… it really stains your hands and never dries on rags or your sprayer. Don’t waste your money on the blue dye.
