You exaggerate a lot… Your points would be taken more seriously if you didn’t exaggerate so much…
CA population 39M

LA County population 10M
Orange County population 3.1M
Bay Area Population. 7.5M

That does not even include the urban areas of San Bernardino, San Diego and Riverside counties, which more than make up for the couple hundred thousand people that live in remote areas of LA, and OC counties.

Yes it’s a total exaggeration Dan that half the state lives in congested city centers.

Keep living in denial.

Why not? With all these folks who have found better places to live what's wrong with sharing that? Let me answer for you... they can't! We all have different views, interest's, hobbies and experiences. A place that suites me may not suite you or the next guy. If you don't like California fine but remember it's still my home and several others in here and we have a right to defend it.

You don't hear us Californians trash talking other places. It's always the same people spinning the same old broken record. I'm at the point where ok, if where you've moved is so superior, let's hear what makes it so great! Go ahead and convince me and anyone else why we should leave. If you can't then stfu.

Every place else sucks. Stay in SoCa, I don't want to listen to the Gdamn Dirtbikes and Hotrods anyway. Stay off my lawn. :)

Joking aside, good for you that you have a life where recreational activity options can outweigh the negative aspects of your state.

The only thing I miss is a good taco.

@angiebaby stop selling. We don't need the place getting messed up by people who want to make it like where they came from. SSHH, for Christ's sake.

I think those that love California are blessed with the opportunity to live in really nice coastal places, and I can't relate to what makes it special because I lived in the Inland Empire, which is a shit hole. 2-hours from everywhere, nowhere near anyplace nice. There was nothing but traffic and dead vegetation for as far as I could see. The regulations were unbearable, the costs crippling. Going to the beach was far from a relaxing experience; forget going camping.

When you tell a Californian to go be poor somewhere else, they go to the I.E.

I think those that don’t know any better live in OC/LA/ETC.

If you choose to live in CA you are not avoiding income tax. If you own a business you can fudge the numbers.

But moving today is insane. Leaving a paid for home or sub 3% mortgage rate for a 8+% rate is insane.

California is beautiful if you leave SF,LA,OC etc. but you can never outrun the taxes.

Having owned stuff down there, and seeing the growth over the years plus the crowds and "surf" chop on the lake has me praying Needles never gets another grocery store 😂 .
They'll get 20 more dispensaries before a grocery store. But each new dispensary will cary 3-4 random grocery items that you need.....like the liqour stores do now

Wife and I cannot find a better place to live. It takes a shit load of work and money. But we cannot find a location that works for us.

The reality of California is, make money and pay the taxes.

I'm not selling anything. There are many, many places in the country with characteristics like I described. Most with better weather than our choices. The point I was trying to make is that what people love about wherever they live does not mean everyone loves and values those same things to the same degree. Or, they may see other factors that make it overwhelming less desirable that don’t really bother people who live there.

It’s all about push-pull factors for those choosing to stay or leave. Which are stronger based on an individual’s life values? There is kind of an assumption that everyone values the same things I do and if they make a different decision than me, it’s the wrong one. I understand why people would stay in SoCal and I understand why people would leave. I think the challenge for me is trying to understand why people who love it can’t understand why anyone would leave and some even seem to get kind of angry when others say why they want to leave, like they take it personal or something.

I miss tacos also.

That’s what I thought too until they start coming for your kids.

If I didn’t have kids I’d still be there.

q

How did CA come for your kids?

How aren’t they coming for your kids?

Education is well below average and getting worse.

Your kid can decide to change genders at school without your consent.

They were ready to mandate your kids get vaccinated for a virus that does not affect them.

Then they are trying to let child traffickers, molesters and rapists off easily, and take them off registries.

I hate California’s politics and love other parts of the country but I’m stuck here because I work in the film industry. Work allows me to live temporarily in other places and I find myself saying I could live here. Then I come home and go to places like the Sierras and say I sure would miss this but I miss some of the places I traveled. I think I’m going to have to be a traveling man until I die. That works. Keep Needles sketchy . Maybe a logo with a rock bar, a syringe, and a dry reefed dock crusher is in order to keep the Chinese investors away for a few more decades

And there it is! 👍

Finally, someone who gets it! I'm not sure why some of the posters here think I love everything about California because that's far from true, BUT I do try and take advantage of the better aspects. I need some return for the mind-boggling cost of living! :p

I'll be thinking about all the haters tomorrow as I make a pass down Pomona's iconic dragstrip. Might not get another chance so I'm taking advantage of it. 🤘🤘

Our school isn’t like that - test scores and performance metrics are fantastic. Matter of fact, the entire district is known for excellent schools.

Our school district never mandated the vax.

Our school doesn’t push sexual agendas on kids. If they did, we’d go to a different school. We also talk to the teachers and stay involved with the school. You should never trust anyone blindly with your kids, no matter what state your in.

If a parent needs the school to notify them that Timmy wants to wear a skirt - maybe they need to be more involved with their kid? That shouldn’t be a surprise….

It’s simple. Don’t live in the hood. Don’t be a victim. Don’t be pushed around. Houses are expensive, but there’s also a lot of money to be made here.

CA is like a Speed Car - everybody who doesn’t have it loves to hate on it.
They spend ridiculous amounts of time talking about it, and go out of their way to make sure to slam it every chance they get.
Also like a Speed Car….many of those hating can’t afford it

Personal accountability and smart choices go a long way - your CA results may vary.

Its probably easier someplace else….and that’s great - can’t blame people for moving. But why slam everyone who doesnt…..

Well said !

Keep in mind that in the public setting the staff aren't allowed to tell you everything going on in the school.

You are 100% spot on about staying involved at home and not letting anyone parent your kids. Many private schools pushing the same nonsense as public schools. STAY INVOLVED !

So here is a question...

Ages ago, I rode my three wheeler up around Mammoth Mt, and the ski patrol guys were cool with it! (Yes, it was decades ago). It was a freaking blast.

So let's say there is snow on the ground.

Could I ride my quads on the street?

How about if I had a snowmobile?

Just putting around of course. 😊
What I was told by a ranger is that the sheriffs allow dirt bikes to ride on streets to connect trails. They allow you to cross 395 but cite you if you ride on it. It seems pretty fair and I hope people don’t take advantage of it.

Can you guys find a place in your hearts where you can genuinely be happy for people? It's not a competition. We like where we live and we accept the good and bad that comes along with CA.

All the whining and complaining on RDP about CA is unfortunate to a boating website that is suppose to bring us all together. I'm surprised that people haven't come to a place of acceptance that people are gonna do what they're gonna do and need to do.

We're not in competition with AZ, UT, NV or Montana... I'm happy that you and your wife have found a great lifestyle that works for you, I think it's fantastic that it works for you guys.

You guys aren't telling us anything we don't already know. We live here and get the news first hand. We make it work because we think it's worth it and the positives weigh out the negatives.

People want to move to Idaho, more power to them, they should give it a try.. I have lots of friends that have moved, they seem to like it. I'm happy for them. Again, I'm not in competition with them. I want my friends to be happy.

Lastly, you called the IE a "Shithole"... While I was in CO a couple of months ago I ran into a guy at my hotel, he said he was on his way to Havasu. I said, Oh I love Havasu.. He said, "Yeah, it used to be a great place, too bad it's turned into a "Shithole".... You'd never hear that on RDP... lol But if you guys love it and enjoy it, I'm happy for you. Because in the end, it's really none of my business.

It's an inside joke between Angie and me; we've done this teasing thing since the HotBoat days (20 years now).

I grew up in the I.E. It is, by my definition, a shit hole. My mom and grandmother live there, I don't visit them. Took us 25 years to get the hell out of that place.

It is no secret how these California threads are gonna go.

Everything is a competition. This is a form of Alpha males.

I won't go to California for the funerals.
That’s kind of fucked up.
I’m dreading the day my dad goes. He’s about the only one that’s still there that matters the most to me.
We’re so glad to finally be gone and in our new state and beautiful new home but I know I’m gonna have to fly back at least once.
As said above I’m totally dreading that day.

I feel compelled to apologize to the RDP community for that post, I should not have doubled down on that.

There are places I have to travel for my job (CLE, ORD,ATL). I don't like visiting, but I truly hate going to the I.E. and avoid it at all costs. Perhaps much of that hate comes from my experience living there.

Yes, I am aware of how fucked up that is. There is a boat I'm interested in located in the I.E., and I can't muster up the willingness to go look at it, even with it being what looks like on paper a hell of a deal.

I don't think people on this forum who love California live in Perris or Homeland. Massive difference between San Bernadino and Fairbanks Ranch.

Thankfully I live up in the mountains but I spend my working hours in San Berdoo so I’m intimately familiar with the area.

San Bernardino is an American Tijuana. Still one of the most dangerous cities in the U.S., if not still number one. I would not be sad about never seeing it again, either.

To me this population concentration in Ca IS what makes parts of it tolerable, being that it's such a large state. I like the area in Utah you recently moved to as well as a lot of other things about that state for the record. I like parts of Az, Florida, and other states as well and will probably end up moving back to Az eventually.
We moved from Az to the SFV for a while when I was a kid, so I have spent some time in that type of an area in Ca, and promptly got out at 18 years old ( not to talk shit on it, just not my bag ). Here's where a lot of Ca residents who read this type of general bash stuff comparing the entire state to downtown san bernardino based on state tax or the governor whom millions didn't vote for just can't get on board. I'll use my town - Cayucos - where I've lived since leaving LA/ valley as an example but there are tons of other similar places to live , some minus the beach obviously . We have a 500' walk to the sand, multiple surf spots , golf carts with passengers drinking tumblers with cocktails, fishing, kayak fishing, launch jet skis off the beach, mountain bike and hiking trails on areas that will never be developed, plenty of water, hiking trails, everyone dies famous in small towns like this where you know them all, and the sheriffs still care less after the 33 years I've been here about kids (and guys like me) riding dirt bikes thru town slowly to access trails. Hunting nearby, or literally right here if you've lived here a long time and know who to go with on private property. CCW permits no issue. More than enough work to offset the state income tax rate. Clean air, close to other nice areas like Paso Robles, Big sur, Shell Beach, Launch ramp at Morro Bay, hour and a half tow to launch at Santa Barbara to hit the channel islands for dive/fish/surf/ surf the Hollister Cojo ranch , good schools . There's still Almost zero traffic, although technically worse than it was 30 years ago where highways hit signals . There are still tons of places in Ca like this minus the beach, not to mention all of the ranching and farming areas. VRBO/ nightly rental/ adu has ruined the sense of community to a major point with young families pushed out , which is really why we will move, but obviously property value soars even more with that stuff. The rusty work trucks are being replaced by an endless stream of land rovers and teslas circling the hood all year long on weekends, but anyone willing to work can name their price . Chinese investors are lurking. For me that's the sign to bail out, not taxes /crime/traffic etc.

Born and raised in So Cal. As an adult I lived in 12 different places, from Carlsbad to Morro Bay, San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties. Most all were very nice, back then anyway. Now, every single one of those 12 areas are represented by a Democrat in the US House of Representatives. Some weren’t a surprise. Carlsbad and Camarillo were, kind of.

The rusty work trucks are being replaced by an endless stream of land rovers and teslas circling the hood all year long on weekends, but anyone willing to work can name their price . Chinese investors are lurking. For me that's the sign to bail out, not taxes /crime/traffic etc.

The area where you live is excellent! You make some good points as there are many pockets of refuge in CA, far from the populated areas if you are just willing to deal with the regulations and taxes. If I had no kids I probably would not have moved for quite a while into the future. The regulations as well as the time it took to get out of the city centers to do fun things just got old. We were 15 mins from the beach, but everything else is a 90 minute drive minimum when there was no traffic.

I gassed up in Morro Bay a few months ago heading to visit the kids in Phoenix and fly to Zihuat. My biggest surprise was paying more for gas in Phoenix than Morro Bay . That to me, along with Az going blue is an example of the real elephant in the big room as it pertains to politics, not quality of life per say.
