Here is my this year Powell thread. I'm going back 7-15 through 7-19 then turning around and back down 7-24 through 7-27
we were there 7-2 through 7-6. Here is our trip report. We got a little bit of a late start on Thursday (sucks being the boss) left the house about noon after fueling up Mega-Cummer and Ms.Subtle arrive launched at Bullfrog a little before 6 pm. IMG_1730.jpg IMG_1731.jpg
I always leave my truck in the over flow parking lot seems every time I park in the lots closer to the ramp my truck or trailer gets hit. Still have a crease in the back of the bed from someones trailer up right. and my old DCB trailer had more then one ding after sitting in the lot for a few days (sorry Erick)

We hauled ass down to "Nelsen Cove" A little no-name hole in the sand stone wall at mile maker 80. Huge kudos to my wife H2O Chick who works her ass off prep cooking all our meals the week before. We had Pot roast complete with potatoes, carrots and onions out of the slow cooker. this is our spot for Thurs night. IMG_1733.jpg
After anchoring eating and cleaning up we blew up a float toy and tossed a few icy cold ones back

we came back up to Antelope had a pizza and a couple of pints
IMG_1751.jpg
we past a DCB M35 or M31 heading the other way we were going to fast or he was going to fast to get a picture. Saw a couple of Sleek Crafts and a few other hot boats on the docks and around Antelope. What was kind of sad though was this center pod Fountain apparently a marina boat that looked like shit.
IMG_1752.jpg
I understand why you Cali and AZ. Guys think Powell is too rough. I don't get down to the Wahlweep side of the lake that often not only because its a long haul but damn it's busy down there. after all the house boats, big boats, tour boats and the wake guy who don't dump their ballast tanks we pass this baller
IMG_4646.jpg
The asshole didn't pull the throttles back until he was right on the wake less buoy. shit he was pushing a 3' bow wake and his wake rolled easily over those big as tires they use as a brake water. Made me think stepping up to a 28' wasn't enough

After leaving Antelope and visiting a few other of our favorite places another quick stop at Dangling, more fuel and Ice. back up to Escalante in and out of canyons we arrive in the back of 50 mile canyon to a spot we know to make camp and there is DaveH in his yellow Hallet a RDP member and his buddy Todd in another Hallet in our spot. No biggie we anchored around the corner make dinner, blow up the kayak and float toy and paddled around the corner to visit with Dave and Todd. (nice to meet you guys) Sorry no pictures of this or their boats, didn't put the camera on the kayak. They left in the am. We took their spot Saturday Morning set our anchors and ropes on the inflatables and explore around the Escalante up to Explorer canyon. at least the marker was floating this year. better than last year when it was high and dry
IMG_4660.jpg
That's about as far up the Escalante as I care to take the new boat as it gets pretty shallow right about here. 20 years ago I took my Eliminator jet boat approximately 15 miles further up river to Stevens Arch but the water was a lot higher then, and that's another story. we past the 3 roofs ruins. The NPS had it roped off

We went to Lagorce arch
IMG_0221.jpg
and checked out what is probably the best camp spot in the Escalante where me and my buddy in the Nordic camped last year the first trip out with the new Howard.
IMG_4681.jpg
Then back down to the Cathedral where we ran into McKay a RDP member and his buddy Randy. Turns out they are friends with my buddy I used to car show with.... Small world

B-RAD77,

Thanks for the great thread!

We'll be up there with TKRROX from the 18-27. We've always stayed at Lone Rock and made runs to Rainbow and Escalante, but nothing further. We're trying to plan a two day trip from Wahweap to BF, camping and exploring along the way. It sounds like you know some really great spots.

How long did it take you to get from BF to Wahweap, and what was your cruise speed? I'm also curious about the fuel situation. What motor do you have and any issues with 87? How much fuel does the bullet carry?

This is what I gathered for fuel grades on the lake.
Wahweap: 87
Antelope: 87/89/91
Dangling Rope: 87
Halls Crossing: 87/91
Bull Frog: 87

I'd like to keep 91 in the boat if possible. I can bring octane booster if needed but 87 scares me a bit.

Thanks again and sorry about the 20 questions. Just a little excited. A lot to do before we leave and time is flying by!

Cool Pics Brad. Nice meeting you too. We will be down again this Sunday/Monday for 5-6 days again. Thankfully we will be coming out of Bullfrog this time. Will have a bigger crew this time along with the heat I will have a beater pontoon boat too. Now where I ran into you. I always called that Clear Creek. Is that incorrect? I love Cathedral Canyon too but that is down near Rainbow.

Great pictures. We are going out 8/2-8/9. Were there any noticeable unmarked water hazards to avoid in the lower portion of the lake? We are taking off out of Antelope.

Where is Cathedral Canyon?

Yes there are hazards. Just need to look for them and use common sense. I hear people bitch about them not being marked. Some are, many not. I don't know how they could reasonably mark them though. A few weeks ago the lake was coming up 3/4 foot a day. Last year for almost the whole month of June it came up 1 foot everyday. It's a huge lake and I just don't see it feasible but that is just my opinion. Just pay attention to the land contours around you and when in doubt run from mile marker to mile marker and you should be safe.

The canyon that is marked as "Cathedral Canyon" on Lake Powell maps is the canyon before Rainbow Bridge when coming from Wahweap. But it seams many call "Cathedral Canyon" the grotto if you will at the end of Clear Creek Canyon. Which is the second on the left up the Escalante Arm.

of course its not possible to mark every single hazard on the lake. especially as the water has been going up recently. but there were serious obstacles in the main channel....I don't think that its too much to mark them....especially with how much traffic goes through.

Glad to see someone still goes to this place!!

I'm heading to SLC over the 24th for MoMo days and thinking of dragging the boat up and dropping it off in Page for the rest of the summer. I keep forgetting that i'm only a 4 hour drive from there

time from Bullfrog to Wahweep: we didn't do a straight shot. In and out of canyons all the way plus we camped at Mile maker 80 Thurs night . Mile maker outside of Halls is 97.
I usually cruise around 50 mph 3800-4200 rpm
Motor is the Merc. 565 I don't love 87 octane either. Merc. says that motor is fine all the way down to like 85. I filled my boat with 91 at home. After 3 stops at Dangling taking 20-25 gallons each time. I'm sure my tank was fairly diluted by the end of the weekend. It didn't act any different start to finish. the Bullet holds 80 gallons. you are right on the money with fuel grades at each marina.

Before I turned my 600 up the only thing 91 got me over 87 was a way dirtier transom.

I called Bob Sobe today to talk about Boostane fuel additive. He says that it can take 87 and mix it up to 98 octane. That seems like the solution to good fuel in Powell.

You are correct were we ran into each other is at the end of Clear Creek canyon. That little area were you can't hardly see the sky is called the Cathedral in the desert. Cathedral canyon is down river more around mile maker 46. A little clarification :D

Thanks for the feedback Brad. We're looking forward to the trip and camping with the boat. That will be a first. We've always just made day trips from Lone Rock.

Do you have his contact info? I was thinking about bringing a drum of VIP but Boostane would be easier to deal with.

Pretty much have to do that if you are going to run the length of the lake...

We sleep on the boat. I carry a small BBQ to cook on. and ALWAYS look for a good little cove or wind block, not directly under a run off spot.
