Well, ole Casper lost her brakes this evening coming home from the grocery store. They were there, and then they weren't!

and here's a nice cluster for you: no leaks, plenty of fluid in the reservoir, no booster to go bad, pedal just decided it felt like taking a nap and went to lie down on the floor when I pushed it in at the end of my drive way coming back from the grocery store. didn't hit anything or anybody thankfully, no damage, and got her back in the garage safe and sound.

If I was waiting for a sign here it is, I think its time to make some changes to the brakes.

currently looking at this kit.

I don’t know the details on that kit, but I really like the kits that are using standard Ford calipers and such. Makes sourcing pads and repair parts really easy later on. The kit does look very comprehensive.

Go with the stainless steel brake co (ssbc) version of the Kelsey-Hayes. I have them on my falcon and they work great.

3 days of storms ahead. now is as good a time as any to get her pulled into the shop for the complete braking system overhaul which I have all the parts sitting here ready to go. I ultimately decided to retain the 4 wheel manual drum brakes. I just couldnt bring myself to get rid of the 60 year old factory 13" wheels. I will however be installing a dual master cylinder to bring up the level of safety just a smidge.

Ive got Casper pulled into the shop ready for it!

couldnt tell you. I know he was taking the money from Casper to fund his flathead deuce build. it was a true deuce too, not a kit car.

Ok, I think I found the cause of losing my brakes. I dont have the front drums off yet but when I removed both the rear drums some pieces fell out😱😵‍💫 and the pins that retain the brake shoes were bent over at a right angle. The shoes were twisting so far over inside the drums that I was basically just running out of pedal. Crazy stuff and a first for me. Still something that the new dual master should help me mitigate of it were to ever happen again.

I had something similar happen, CJ 7, rear drums, front disc, manual dual master cylinder, very soft pedal.
The spreader bar, like yours, went on vacation. The spring 'nails?' bent 90° also. After a new hardware kit and shoes, everything is happy. Stops like a new F-150, loaded to 20K. 🤣
Maybe better.
Slightly.

Protip:

Replace every piece of hardware in there. No exceptions. New wheel cylinders as well.

White grease Everywhere metal touches metal. Especially where the shoes hit the backing plates. Very important.

Replace the brake lines if ANY rust came out of the old system.

Replace all the hoses, no matter what.

Use DOT4 synthetic brake fluid. It does not absorb water from the air.

Adjust till TIGHT and then back off till you can rotate with Some drag.

Take your time bleeding. Get ALL the air out.

Lastly, if you already know all this stuff, tell me to mind my own business and fuck off. 👍🏼😁

already has new brake lines and wheel cylinders and a [single cylinder] master for that matter from previous owner when he got her going again. however a bunch of springs were all jacked up, looks like they got installed wrong when he put it back together which I suspect caused the issue. I have maybe 200miles on her since ownership and he only ever drove the car to the next street over to his buddies house a handful of times.

anyway, I installed all new everything on the back except for the wheel cylinder and upfront has an all new hardware kit inside but the drums and shoes I ordered for it are wrong. I can get the correct shoes but I think Im going to have to turn the drums as they are odd ducks and I cant seem to find a new replacement set for up front. so its going back together as is with the at least the issue downstares fixed for now while I regroup. Theres still plenty of material on the shoes tho.

you know these old cars, theyre never cut and dry like wed all like them to be. It doesnt help that she was oroginally a 1 year only 221w car and Ive been finding little changes here and there that arent published (like these slightly larger front brakes that look identical to the standard ones to the naked eye)

I plan on keeping DOT3

except im in the free state of TX

Free, as long as you stay on the highway! No off-roading allowed. 😋

So I just thought of something...

In SoCal, I have half a dozen shooting ranges within 35min of my house, and public land I can shoot in maybe an hour a way?

Since there is no PUBLIC land in Texas, where do you guys to to shoot?? 🤷‍♂️

shooting ranges, there are plenty of outdoor and indoor ranges, even in Austin. Or, as the law is written,: any contiguous piece of property greater than 9.999 acres. Funny thing about Texas is everybody knows somebody who has a ranch or a "lease" somewhere. if you dont, then youre probably the asshole that everybody on RDP is complaining about. its really a non issue.

as far as me. where I live used to be a dirtbike school. I have an offroad track in my backyard should I choose to ever use it.

....and I know a couple people with "leases" and/or "ranches" for anything beyond that 😁

So....

If you own more than 9.9 acres, you can shoot or ride on your own property?

you can ride on your own property if you have 1/4 acre, I wouldnt recommend it though lol. but yes, if you own 10 contoguous acres or more you can legally discharge a firearm just because.

btw. I still see kids riding around on dirt bikes and such on the public roads around me. Ive never seen one get hassled who wasnt being an idiot

Got it.

As much as people rag on CA, I feel a lot more free here, than I would in a state like TX. That's just me though. If you're happy there, it's all good. 👍

the waters great. come on in😉

Maybe Someday I'll move out of CA. But I'm thinking it will be somewhere west of the Rockies.

I NEED pine trees, clear lakes, mountains to hike and miles of off-roading.

Texas checks none of those boxes.

Thanks for the offer, but I'm gonna take a pass on this one. 👍🏼
