Is there a way to upright that ship and get it to a dry dock for repair? Or is it a total loss?

The operator hired a Norwegian company to patch the damage, right her, and tow her in.
In the meantime, the Coast Guard is still opening holes in the hull to attempt more searches.

Heard in Italy it is a federal crime for the captain to leave the ship before the passengers so looks like he might be doing some jail time.

Just heard they are keeping the captain in jail, and may face charges that include manslaughter, shipwreck, and abandoning a ship when passengers were still on board. They found 5 more bodies this morning.

They can right that????

I can't believe they can even do that with something that big.. WOW! Sounds like a Discovery Channel special to me :thumbsup

What a shame, and a disaster for all involved, not to mention the people that lost their lives...Terrible.

I guess in Italy it is a HUGE deal since they talked about it quite often on the news last night. Yes, the captain is supposed to go down with the ship.

Unfortunate and could have been a lot worse if they had not been so close to shore...

I believe he actually "beached" it after hitting the rock. He did a u-turn and ran it aground to prevent sinking.

If it's true that the capt ran off the planned course and close to shore intentionally to blast the horn for a buddy, he should be locked up.

Oh they can do it. We've got a Scandanavian based company next door that specializes in heavy hauling and erection of huge pieces of equipmnent. They just built a new office building that is 3 stories tall and over 200,000 sq ft. Built of steel and glass it was completely assembled a half mile east of the site and they moved it over and set it on a Saturday. These folks can move damned near any sized object.

Too bad the ship didn't have a Norweigian Capt.

I was on a Disney cruise last week and found out about it onboard the ship. While we were watching it on the news, my 4 year old asked it that was the boat we are on.

According to news websites and today's Los Angeles Times, a high ranking Itailian Coast Guard official ordered the Captain of this ill-fated ship to return to his ship shortly after the captain arrived on shore. The capatain REFUSED to return to his disabled ship even after he was informed there was a pilots ladder he could easily climb back to the prow of his ship. In my humble opinion this captain has severly broken international maritime laws and is in dereliction of duty of the position and responsiblities of his position and responsilities to all passengers, all crew members, and his employers. He is finished.

How in the heck could the Captain even consider a request like that? Such a shame for the lost lives, all for the toot of a horn.

:D:thumbsup

My wife is all into this story.

According to what she's been reading, not only the captain, but a bunch of senior officers also left the ship, and were among the first to do so. This is beyond shameful, if true.

She says the real heroes as far as rescuing passengers were on-board entertainers (like dancers) and the waitstaff.

Yahoo just posted this but the translation was done by Reuters.

Coast Guard: Hello.
Captain: Good evening, chief.
Coast Guard: Listen, this is De Falco from Livorno. Am I speaking with the captain?
Captain: Good evening, Chief De Falco.
Coast Guard: Tell me your name, please.
Captain: I am Captain Schettino, chief.
Coast Guard: Schettino?
Captain: Yes.

Coast Guard: Listen, Schettino. There are people trapped on board. Now, you go with your lifeboat. Under the bow of the ship, on the right side, there is a ladder. You climb on that ladder and go on board the ship. Go on board the ship and get back to me and tell me how many people are there. Is that clear. I am recording this conversation, Captain Schettino.
(Captain tries to speak but Coast Guard can't hear him clearly. Voices in the Coast Guard room.)
Coast Guard: Speak up! (captain tries to speak) Captain, put your hand over the microphone and speak in a louder voice!
Captain: At this moment the ship is listing.
Coast Guard: There are people who are coming down the ladder on the bow. Go back in the opposite direction, get back on the ship, and tell me how many people there are and what they have on board. Tell me if there are children, women and what type of help they need. And you tell me the number of each of these categories. Is that clear?
Listen Schettino, perhaps you have saved yourself from the sea but I will make you look very bad. I will make you pay for this. Dammit, go back on board!
(Noise can be heard in the background. Apparently other Coast Guard officers are shouting to each other in the same room about "the ship, the ship")
Captain: Please ...
Coast Guard: There is no 'please' about it. Get back on board. Assure me you are going back on board!
Captain: I'm in a lifeboat, I am under here. I am not going anywhere. I am here.
Coast Guard: What are you doing, captain?
Captain: I am here to coordinate the rescue...
Coast Guard (interrupting): What are you coordinating there! Get on board! Coordinate the rescue from on board! Are you refusing?
Captain: No, I am not refusing.

Coast Guard: Are you refusing to go aboard, captain? Tell me the reason why you are not going back on board.
Captain: (inaudible)... there is a another lifeboat...
Coast Guard (interrupting, yelling): You get back on board! That is an order! There is nothing else for you to consider. You have sounded the "Abandon Ship." Now I am giving the orders. Get back on board. Is that clear? Don't you hear me?
Captain: I am going aboard.
Coast Guard: Go! Call me immediately when you are on board. My rescue people are in front of the bow.
Captain: Where is your rescue craft?
Coast Guard: My rescue craft is at the bow. Go! There are already bodies, Schettino. Go!
Captain: How many bodies are there?
Coast Guard: I don't know! ... Christ, you should be the one telling me that!
Captain: Do you realize that it is dark and we can't see anything?
Coast Guard: So, what do you want to do, to go home, Schettino?! It's dark and you want to go home? Go to the bow of the ship where the ladder is and tell me what needs to be done, how many people there are, and what they need! Now!
Captain: My second in command is here with me.
Coast Guard: Then both of you go! Both of you! What is the name of your second in command?
Captain: His name is Dmitri (static)"
Coast Guard: What is the rest of his name? (static) You and your second in command get on board now! Is that clear?
Captain: Look, chief, I want to go aboard but the other lifeboat here has stopped and is drifting. I have called ...
Coast Guard (interrupting): You have been telling me this for an hour! Now, go aboard! Get on board, and tell me immediately how many people there are!
Captain: OK, chief.
Coast Guard: Go! Immediately!

The Coast Guard Chief reminds me of this guy :)

According to this article:
http://news.yahoo.com/cruise-ship-captain-questioned-police-165542603--abc-news.html

The captain's lawyer Bruno Leporatti said Schettino was taken to the Grosseto jail, but argued that the captain was a hero.

"I would like to say that hundreds of people owe their life to the captain of the Costa Concordia's skill in an emergency," the lawyer said. "You have to be very good to bring a ship like this which is 117,000 tons and 300 meters long, which is sinking after a collision, close to land to allow for easy rescue so as to save so many people. I think the maneuver was brilliant from a nautical point of view."

So let me get this straight:
The captain, who veered off-course to show off to friends, is a hero because he ran the ship aground in such a way that it was easy to get people off the boat.

That's like murdering your neighbor, then calling yourself a hero for showing the cops where the the body is.

Any captain knows this. It applies to pleasure vessels as well. The Captain stays until everyone is off or accounted for. What a stupid fuck.

This should shut up the RDP members who claim a depth finder is useless. :thumbsup

Most of RDP peeps boat in waters with sandy bottoms. No need for depthsounders ,just hop out of the boat and push it off:D.
I've heard Lake Mead has some rocks but only 2FF boats there.

Jetboats don't seem to have shallow-water issues.
Why aren't all cruise ships jetboats? :skull

Time constraints and fuel consumption.:skull

Actually used more than one thinks in Ocean Boats. http://www.hamiltonjet.com/

The Ferry Cats that run to Catalina run 4, V-12 MTU Diesels with these Hamilton jets. They run well for what they are.

They dont need to be Jets. There is no reef to cross between Long Beach and Avalon LOL. So it's a gimmic best I can tell.

Saw the story on NBC nightly. They said it was common for ships to make a close pass to this point and honk the horn. Was the same captain doing this regularly or does everyone do it? Don't ships have side scanning sonar to see underwater obstructions like bug rocks?!
