It's basically taking the functionality of your iPhone and projecting it in the space in front of you? Who would wear this outside their house? Guess I'm too old and not the target market. Lol

So can you see outside the goggles? I saw a post over the weekend of a guy stopping in the middle of a crosswalk to "play" whatever game was going on inside his headset. I was waiting for him to get mowed over by a Mack truck but he crossed the street successfully. I suspect there will be lots of Darwin Award Winners as a result of these VR headsets being used in "the real world".

They can be used to significantly lower the simulator cost for vocational training like robotic surgery, welding, driving, IFR flying and other expensive activities.

Like all new tech, it's a little clunky now but will be used for all sorts of activities from work to entertainment.

I played with a welding simulator using them and it was really good as a training tool.

One other thing AR (augmented reality) is supremely useful for is imagine you are in maintenance (airplanes, cars, power plants, you name it).

You have no idea what you’re working on and need to consult the manual. So you stop, pull the manual and have to have it with you (top of a lift, ladder, etc) and it’s bulky and you have to put it on something.

Now imagine you could have the same manual but it’s in AR glasses. Not only could you page through the manual in front of your face without having to take both hands off the work, but if it offers an exploded diagram view and you need to identify the part, It can highlight the part right in your vision.

This is just one of many examples where AR shines and can be used across multiple industries.

Now, VR on the other hand is a nerd date with a supermodel. You don’t want to see your hand giving you the business, you want to see her hand doing it. VR doesn’t let you see outside the glasses it’s all internal. Which is the escapism most expect from VR, but not useful when you need to interact with reality.

If/when they make them smaller like a normal pair of glasses or just not overall as bulky, I could see a real use for this when offroading at speed and identifying what trail or path to take. If there were a way to overlay or highlight the route you were supposed to take on the terrain in front you, that would be awesome. Maybe useful in the same way for boating at night too.

I wouldn't wear anything like that just to have the contents of my phone in front of my face though.

True, but it would be nice to have someone properly trained to weld that bridge or that water pipe.

And if these things can make proper vocational training more affordable giving more opportunities for high paying critical jobs to those who couldn’t afford the training in the past, I’m hard pressed to ignore the promises of the technology.

Beats the shit out of a ton of government guaranteed student loans for useless degrees where all the graduate can do is become a barista at Starbucks.
