Did the simulated metal get hot and give you a simulated burn?

We use simulation to train lots of people in lots of different tasks. The more immersive the better the training.

I know you guys all hate anything 530 endorses but there are huge upsides using these tools to teach people real world skills.

One other thing AR (augmented reality) is supremely useful for is imagine you are in maintenance (airplanes, cars, power plants, you name it).

You have no idea what you’re working on and need to consult the manual. So you stop, pull the manual and have to have it with you (top of a lift, ladder, etc) and it’s bulky and you have to put it on something.

Now imagine you could have the same manual but it’s in AR glasses. Not only could you page through the manual in front of your face without having to take both hands off the work, but if it offers an exploded diagram view and you need to identify the part, It can highlight the part right in your vision.

This is just one of many examples where AR shines and can be used across multiple industries.

Now, VR on the other hand is a nerd date with a supermodel. You don’t want to see your hand giving you the business, you want to see her hand doing it. VR doesn’t let you see outside the glasses it’s all internal. Which is the escapism most expect from VR, but not useful when you need to interact with reality.

I do that now with my phone. Don't need no stinking goggles for that?

Are they osha approved safety goggles?

Work bought a driving simulator, very few people could drive it, it wasn't even close to the real thing. No joke people throwing up and falling off the thing.... you know truck drivers are constantly falling out of the truck while driving down the road.

Doing it for clicks. No able bodied critical thinking HUMAN being is going to be doing this amongst us. 🤦🏽‍♂️ I don’t believe it… I don’t want to believe it.

Can’t wait until I see the videos of all these people getting robbed of them in real time... not virtual. $2500 is mucho dinero.
They already got robbed when they bought it. So you mean robbed for the second time when someone runs off with it.

This is Millennial utopia. They can Instagram how cool they are out in real world without having to actual interact with anyone in the real world.

As Dave points out some people are just negative. They can identify the problem, lack of trained workers and lack of funds to train them, but refuse to be part of the solution.

Helping people get ahead with this type of stuff is worthwhile and keeps jobs here. All of us who care, shouldn't let the haters detract from trying to make it a better community and create more opportunity for young people.

If we listened to some people and just gave up, we’d still be plowing fields with oxen and wood plows.

The simulators would be great use and opportunity to identify people with natural talent or ability towards a particular skill.

All of the craftsmen and tradesmen recruitment is lacking due to many young people having no familiarity with the scope of work.

This would be, as you pointed out an excellent tool to weed out the non hackers or drum up enthusiasm where one lacks any knowledge of a trade.

They’re going to really have to work on the design so it doesn’t leave tan lines for all you boaters boating in virtual reality. 🤣

Can’t wait to see y’all stumbling around with your goggles on at Desert storm.😊

I haven't read all the comments, but my brother got one. So far he likes it and said it pretty much replaces his desktop computer for his business.

No, but we’re working with the ITW to buy and donate a training rig or two to help out the community college.

Want to chip in to make training better and more affordable for some needy young people wanting to make their lives better?
What kind of fucking scam are you running this time?

Looks like a bad headache waiting to happen.

It's bad enough having a phone cook my ear and head. These would slay me !

I learned the real way, usually works best
So in your opinion there's no useful purpose for utilizing simulators in any training environment, or just welding training ?

This is the BIGGEST crock of shit I have ever heard! There are tons of opportunities for people to get trained in a trade all over this country that have ZERO cost to the trainee. Plenty of community colleges that have the courses offer grants for low income students. If ones doesnt want to got that way then there is the Union options as well.

If you want to help raise funds and donate to a local community college, that is great and the college is lucky to receive the help. But don't try to use the left's sales pitch of "poor students can't afford it" BS.

It doesn't hurt so much to crash a flight sim, but aside from that....yeah, train by doing.

That's how you did it, that's how I did it, and that's how everyone did it before the world started crying about how they can't find enough skilled workers. Imagine if all the training that took place had real consequences instead of simulated consequences when the trainee fucked up? They might take things a bit more serious and learn faster and better and be worth a shit when they finished.

I'm more imagining the ambulances hauling off the trainees and somebody calling out "NEXT" 🤣
My son recently wired up an incredible simulator for Axel Rose so he could learn and perfect his driving skills for his new extremely rare McLaren supercar.

This simulator is the same one McLaren uses with this software to train and hone the skills of their racing teams.
I'm more a believer in saving those real world consequences after substantial training in the basics.
I know the ones we worked on for the Navy before the Marines took over Miramar, were so realistic pilots were damn near carried out of them if they crashed.

There are certainly applications where simulators are a viable tool and others perhaps not, like my trade, highly unlikely anybody's going to learn to bend conduit on a simulator as one example.
But defusing a bomb, well that might be more worthwhile.

This actually might be a good thing for millennials.

Maybe now they can get an understanding of how to work a broom or shovel.

It may have it's place but simulators aren't the answer to eliminating hands on training. I'm guessing our roughly 300k simulator isn't anything remotely close to the cost of a flight simulator so if you think that spending 300k+ on a welding simulator is better and cheaper than the real thing🙄.

Doesn't matter what I think, I spent 50 years as an electrician, hardly the environment simulation training.
Where did I offer any opinion regarding the usefulness of a welding simulator ? I've never seen one so have no opinion either way as to their usefulness as a training aide.

But I am of the opinion they are a vital tool for numerous other applications, including driving so long as the simulator is programmed to accurately respond to the driver's input.

Why your company's drivers aren't capable of utilizing the simulator begs the question WHY ??
