Thank you 👍, then I stand corrected, either the 5-345D I was quoting was either abbreviated or has been revised.
The version I'd read and previously quoted ----
Navigation rules)
( 5-345.D) Normal traffic on the waterways of this state shall be counterclockwise. Watercraft leaving the shoreline area shall yield right-of-way to watercraft approaching the shoreline area notwithstanding the provisions of subsection B of this section.
In layman's terms, keep the shoreline on your right when driving on the lake.

This version from the screen shot appears to be a new revision ?

The one thing that it doesn't state and is left open for interpretation is "looking at the shore as observed from the water". My interpretation is as observed from the channel marker line.

We either police ourselves or they will do it for us.

The problem is to many people have a chip on their shoulder and have a "I know everything you can't tell me anything" attitude and now those same people are complaining that the cops are being dicks.

To be honest I'm surprised that so many on here didn't know you need to approach your destination from the right and leave to the left. I didn't see this on my boaters card class and it should be there.

Let's not let this violation become a revenue generator, let's stop it here with this thread.
It's something I've tended to always practice, but until this morning, never read it as a legal ARS or any statute. Is the boaters card testing you on Arizona specific regulations ? I do not believe the California boating regulations state anything other than general CCW rotation. Certainly you won't find this under any federal regs.

This would certainly be an interesting regulation to contest in a court of law, as it's flawed by ambiguity.
Here's a few examples:
What constitutes a shoreline area versus a shoreline ? Is a beach "An area", or a rock, or bush, or is it only a marina ?
Does this mean you can't approach any shoreline other than from the right ? If So, how do you cross the lake then in order to complete a left hand turn ?
What constitutes emerging to the left (Viewed from the water) leaving whatever a shorelines area really is, how far must you proceed towards the left ? 10', 50', 100', 1/4 mile ?
How far must you travel CCW on along the shoreline before turning right into another shoreline area ?

Are these variables simply left up to the discretion of some AZ cop based on his point of observation ?
What if it's a SB Co Sheriff and the shoreline area is on the CA side ? Checking on CA regs now, breakfast time ;)

IDK if CA has the same regulations but that is how I was taught and does make sense in most situations but there is always "the interpretation" by the cop

I've always considered it a common sense action relative to many variables. As an example, if I'm leaving Site Six on a day where there's other boat traffic, I'll proceed out of the harbor turning right (From my perspective) merging behind other traffic, then bank left when it's clear in order to proceed in an opposite direction. The problem with that can be --- If I'm leaving the marina harbor entrance with a clear view both directions and there's no oncoming traffic, I've got a far better view of what's coming at me on the left, if I'm proceeding straight, rather than looking over my shoulder after I've turned right ---- this is an example of a variable. This way I can more rapidly proceed towards the opposite shore, or mid-lake before I make my turn to the left.

Then as my previously example --- what is the definition of a shoreline "Area" ?

I'm not in any way objection to the common sense validity of this regulation or your trusted practice, I'm concerned about this as being completely up to the discretion of water leo, some bright, others not so much. 😁

I cannot help but wonder if I were to Sound Signal any law enforcement boat on Lake Havasu, if they would know the proper response? Or would they would now just pull me over for making noise? Lol

The bit of irony I've seen is there have been multiple times I've been coming up river aiming towards Thompson Bay dodging leo boats hugging the Az coast going south for their super secret copcove 😂🤷‍♂️😁😎
Do as I say, not as I do.

And don't forget turn on your blinker so that the oncoming traffic as well as going with the flow traffic nose that you plan on turning left.
Or write at least 100 feet
Before the turning point.

Like every year out at the lake, the Arizona cops find something new to enforce. Remember the blue light issue a few years back. That cost me a grand to change my lights. Many years ago I was kicked off of the lake by LHCPD because they did not know what a documented vessel was. I have never had a problem with SBSO. It's always LHCPD and MCSO (mostly MCSO). They will move on to something else next year. They enforce letter of the law not spirit of the law.

Can you request a sergeant/higher up on the water in that registration issue? The same way you can during a normal traffic stop.

I called the lieutenant on duty from the launch ramp before I pulled out. He was an asshole. He said if I did not have state registration on the boat I could expect to be pulled over every time I was on the water. I had my complete documentation package put together by a maritime lawyer with me. I was seriously pissed off. LHCPD seems to have chilled out over the years but now MCSO seems to have ramped up enforcement.

I have ridden the casino ferry a few times Channel to the landing and they dont pass the marina and then come up on the right to turn in. They shoot straight across the lake in either direction.

What if you were turning to back track to Thompson Bay and had to divert to marina for gas?

Actually you might be on to something. The last few times we went to the landing, the Tocopa went due North about 3/4 of the way, then angled West, don't know if this satisfies the sheriff or not, but it is different than the straight angle they used to do. They also leave to the East before turning South.🤷‍♂️

I received a ticket for the same violation Memorial Day Weekend. I was pulling into 3 Dunes to meet up with a group of people. I went into the north cove first, noticed the group wasn't on that side, then proceeded to travel along the shoreline around the point. I made sure to stay within the buoy area and stay at a no wake speed. The Mohave County Sheriff boat was right at the south end of the point and had just got done with another boat they had stopped. I was watching them the entire time. Of course, when I got to that point, they stopped me. I had no idea what I did. According to the law and how its written, I should have been fine. However, I was informed that those buoys (red dots in the picture) did not make up one "no wake zone", but two separate ones. With that in mind, I can see how, as the law is written, I was in the wrong.

I was cordial with the sheriffs, but before they even asked for my paperwork, I they said "Just a heads up, we are required to cite every boat that we stop this weekend." They said that they cant take any chances with safety this weekend. So I asked them if I was expected to travel out to the west side of the river from where I first pulled into 3 Dunes then turn back towards east side of the river and the other side of the point, effectively making a more dangerous situation. They replied with "That is what the law expects"

Definitely a lesson learned for me.

I’ve only had one LEO light me up for being a documented vessel. It was 5-6 years ago. Passed me in the channel where white sand beach is. They flipped on their lights and made a U-turn. Saw the back of the boat, waved us off and turned around. Figured it would happen more. 🤷‍♂️

This should be harassment. Total bullshit and this is what makes people not respect police.

As it's currently written, A.R.S. 5-345D I believe is intended as and should be followed and enforced as a general navigational guideline only. As such, a citable offense only when it's being more flagrantly violated, dangerous or if it results in a collision.

My question for you sir, all common sense aside for a moment, in which Arizona statute are you reading anything in regards to exceptions to this CCW rotation as being exempted by no-wake zones or by traveling at no-wake speeds ?

The only exception I can find to subsection "D" would be "Not withstanding the provisions of subsection "B", which specifies the Danger Zone and right-of-way rule(s).

I got yelled at one year for “going the wrong way” when we were out watching desert storm. We were up the AZ side near cattail and decided to head back to the springs. Rather than cut across an open course with the poker run boats going up and down, I opted to stay near the AZ side and go south. Some people didn’t like that. I deemed it safer than encroaching the course and I technically maintained the ccw rotation by skirting the “patrol boat line” as far out as I could tell they were maintaining it.

No cops, just other boaters.

Obviously no poker run I’d go over to Ca side then go south. But circumstances dictate.

I think they have learned over the years about documented vessels. It was 2002 when we bought our Cigarette that we were kicked off of the water. I was actually banned from the channel for two years out there when they were enforcing the 36' limit. Like I said, it's always something different every year.

Memorial Weekend
we drove out to the island to watch boats go by, they had a sheriffs boat right at the corner ( red light house point ) They stopped 10 boats in an hour cutting the corner or to close to other boats traveling in the opposite direction.

A lot of people hug that corner doesn’t matter what direction they are going…. Not sure why they do that

That is a dangerous spot. Stopping people going the wrong direction there makes sense.

Sorry if anyone else has asked but how about entering the Channel into the Pirate
Majority of boats come from the left side of the entrance and make a left turn into the channel.
What am I missing....

At the RDP regatta during the drivers meeting, a LEO talked about the spot in front of the Riviera as being dangerous. He stated that with all the cross traffic and the fact that the patrol boats may be coming out fast for an emergency he had seen some close calls. Now add in all the new traffic from the Rivera this year, I can see how it might be a hot button for them. Either that or it's a way for them to write a bunch of tickets without burning too much fuel. I took note and try to be on my toes in that area, easy to see how you add a bunch of traffic going from the channel to the Riviera hugging the Az side would make it 10 times worse. Sucks to get a ticket, you would think a warning would get the point across. JMHO

Where'd you find this real time overhead shot --- a drone ? Upper left shows dated today, is that correct ?

This is going to complicate going up river from the channel. Are boats going to be driving in circles out there trying to avoid a ticket? 😁
