I’m going to get my ass chewed when my wife comes home from vacation. There is a nice volume of unused space under the stairs landing. several of our neighbors have installed a face frame and cabinet doors in the dining room to access this space. We had decided to do this but the access is about 3’ 6” to the header. After face frame, reveal and base molding, the opening would be about 2’ 10” and you have to step 9” over the face frame to get in.

After looking at it, I decided to do this. Sure you open the door and the top 2’ 6” is finished wallboard in your face but you have 5’ clearance and I’ll just continue the floor into the space finished wallboard, flush light(s) and perhaps some cabinetry. It’s a little “outside the box” but given what I have to work with, I really like this solution,.

It tool a lit of creative woodworking to get it all to fit but the finished product is it looks just like every other door in the house…. Untill you open it

She was pretty clear that she wanted it in the dining room.

Don’t you know an electrician that can move those wires ? LOL
I know a guy :)

Ya know, I started my apprenticeship in like 92’ CEO’s, CFO’s facilities managers, GCs, designers and architects come to me for advice on electrical. She questions every Fuvking thing ai say. For instance, the lid is all cut up for re-pipe. Let’s put some can lights in! It‘s practically free now! “We don’t need them, sounds expensive, can we just put 2 in?” No, I’ll do the layout and whatever works out is how many I’m putting in.

She’s coming back from vacation to this. There‘s a bridge that cuts across the living room ceiling from the MBR to the kids room got 3 each 4” cans and the dining room which we use for everything but dining and has never had enough light gets 4 each 6” cans. I think I’ll change the fan out for one with no light kit to make the 10’ lid look higher too.

Here‘s what she gets when she comes home from vacation

And still bitch about it LOL

Women, sometimes I think the gays might be on to something,

here is where she wanted the door

First off, the project looks great and you’re doing really nice work. Where you put the door is the most practical place and shows a lot of forethought and planning. The thing is that you didn’t realize ,that’s the spot where she planned on putting that huge potted indoor palm tree that she is currently toting back with her from her vacation.
Yep, you’re going to get yelled at and now that plant is going to get staged strategically in the middle of some walkway so she can continue to berate you every time she has to walk around it. At least that’s how the situation would unfold at my house.

Wait she wanted a small door on the dining room side, and you decided to put a fullsize door on the other side???......yeah you're fkd, good luck smoothing that out....lol...
If he thinks he will be sleeping on the couch, wife has other ideas. . . . . love seat.

That way she will teach him difference between big & small.

So what room is the door in? I think once she sees it, specially if you can finish the trim before she gets home, she will be pretty happy with it. That seems like a much more usable space that way.

You’re missing the point. It doesn’t matter that there is twice the usable space with a built in shelf and she doesn’t have to crawl commando style into tight quarters to retrieve something she wants at the back of the space. It wasn’t her idea!!!
You obviously know nothing about how women think.

I’ve seen it done this way multiple times.
Can you get the drywall all patched and new door casing on with paint before she gets home? Just don’t say anything wait till she notices.🫣😆
Unless that whole dining room stair wall had wainscoting or any panel and molding detail that blended in the little door, it would look weird. I like your idea much better.

No kidding?

At first I was thinking I could turn the door upside down, cut the 2 small panles and trim the bottom, glue the end blocks back in the door and make a mini door. But even if I did a really nice job, have it a midget door would just look weird.

This way looks pretty normal until you open the door

I’d love to have it all trimmed out tomorrow morning when she gets home but I’m leaving the 45 degree corner to bead and texture to drywall professionals. A man has to know his limitations.

Besides, it’s installed enough that I don’t think she’ll know it can still be removed LOL

An idea might be to get a short metro rack on wheels.

So you can roll out the stored items
Rather
then crawl in to get them

Looks great !

More storage is always nice

No, no and no on so many levels.
Just imagine the majority of men cohabitating. Soon the women would be forced to do the same and since women instinctively seek out female companionship they would eventually form entire communities, nay cities or even entire regions. With that many women in close proximity to each other their cycles would sync up. I envision hoards of angry lesbians on PMS forming hunter/killer packs.
We wouldn’t stand a chance.

You’re not using your brain. Just flip on “lifetime” TV. They will all stop dead in their tracks. I’ve never meet a woman who can resist watching a show about another woman almost getting away with killing her husband.

Oh, dont get me wrong, she will still think it would have looked better in the dinning room, but she will realize, but never actually say it out loud, that he idea was better method.
I added 3 each 4” cans to that switch-leg. They are on a dimmer and most modern LED trims have 2 separate 3 position switches on the back, one for output and the other for color temperature. That area had never been well illuminated.
I'm pretty sure he is referring to the 50 million romex cables there in the background.

Your idea is better. I've been down this road many times and the logical solution usually works out. You're going to have a good night when she gets home and sees how much you accomplished.

I suggest that you drywall the top half inside the door so that even though it is blocked when you open the door, it looks finished. The small rooms work great for storage.

I have a similar situation but we're thinking wine cellar

Looks like you put the door in the better spot!

I bought a house and told my wife we were going to do a "light remodel" on it. I had the entire house gutted to the studs before I even closed escrow on it then took her to see it. She wasn't very happy about it, started crying, but once I put it back together she was pretty stoked!

I find it better to just do it anyways and wait for her positive reaction of the finished product.

Whatever you do Drywall and fire tape the area. That hollow core door would be gone in a fire instantly leaving you trapped upstairs.

If you already know then excellent.
Good looking out!

The plan was to finish and texture the wallboard and continue the flooring inside.

Now that you mention it, with her cooking, I’m going to go ahead have the guys make it a 2hr wall.

If I make an opening anywhere weather its just clearing a shelf or purchasing another storage shed thinking this one's for me....Nope.

Is this the master bedroom upstairs with the ceiling fan and the crown mold?

That’s actually the dining room, but we almost never eat there. We eat at the bar, nook or patio. The dining room table is used for laundry folding, fish tank testing, homework projects, anything but eating LOL.
