The casing has to wait for wallboard and texture but last night I furred out the framing for wallboard and installed the ORB hardware to match the rest of the house. The lock set will have to come off for paint but I think it really helps the case for my decision at this point.

I’ll do the electrical this weekend. I’d like to be ready for wallboard on Tuesday, flooring a week or so after that and Saturday I’m having the cabinets measured for new doors and drawers.

I'll be up for the 3:05am update...
When does she get home for the update?
So, I called her to tell her she needs to pay the mechanical guy tonight when he finishes replacing all our ducts. While we wer talkign whe walked into the kitchen and announces”there’s a door right there!” sounded rather pleased. Our older son (who helped me and was with her) “says, no that’s a wall”. I say ”what door?” “A new door!” She says. I say there’s doors all over the house, what are you taking about? Then she says “I have to show Tanya“

Tanya lives 4 doors down in the same model and she has the crawl in access to the same space which my wife wanted to duplicate.

Anyways, she closed the conversation with: “I don’t know why you even ask me when your ideas are always better”. I cut myself before mentioning that I never asked her, she just told me. I’m pretty dumb but I’m not that stupid.

Now send her a bill for your time and materials....

My wife loves that!

I'd like to point out that.... I called that reaction. lol!

That space thats closed off on the top half of the door.... Is there enough depth there to do a spice rack? If not, maybe a corkboard or key stoarge? Something that takes up very little space but yet is always needed somewhere.

So glad that worked out for you. It’s always a risky call for me if I decide to do something without prior written approval.😁

Your idea is better. I've been down this road many times and the logical solution usually works out. You're going to have a good night when she gets home and sees how much you accomplished.

I suggest that you drywall the top half inside the door so that even though it is blocked when you open the door, it looks finished. The small rooms work great for storage.

I have a similar situation but we're thinking wine cellar
I have wanted to have a house to do that in so bad for so long! Kinda like this...

Probably not. The 2X4 is 1.5” X 3.5” the door is 1-3/4” thick, + 5/8” for the wallboard and I need a 5/8” wood to hold the drywall screws/nails but I left about an inch. There is 5/8” space added from the front drywall but as it works out there should be about 1/2” between the door and the small section of wallboard at the top when closed.

Maybe instead of drywall, use white board material (I cant remeber what its called). That way that is a useable area.

Plus, women love white boards. lol!

Best part of working on your own house is you can make as many and as big of holes as you want for access.

Well, that was a letdown.

I kind of expected to see, "Man maimed by wife and surgery required to remove an interior door from his rear" in the local headlines.

I’m going to get my ass chewed when my wife comes home from vacation. There is a nice volume of unused space under the stairs landing. several of our neighbors have installed a face frame and cabinet doors in the dining room to access this space. We had decided to do this but the access is about 3’ 6” to the header. After face frame, reveal and base molding, the opening would be about 2’ 10” and you have to step 9” over the face frame to get in.

After looking at it, I decided to do this. Sure you open the door and the top 2’ 6” is finished wallboard in your face but you have 5’ clearance and I’ll just continue the floor into the space finished wallboard, flush light(s) and perhaps some cabinetry. It’s a little “outside the box” but given what I have to work with, I really like this solution,.

It tool a lit of creative woodworking to get it all to fit but the finished product is it looks just like every other door in the house…. Untill you open it

She was pretty clear that she wanted it in the dining room.

You can always make it a doghouse if you get in trouble.

You could always glue 1/2” or 1/4” drywall to the 2x’s and the existing drywall. Then install something that needs to screwed left and right into the jackstud. Think skinny thoughts lol.
