My current situation……

A weld/fab shop should be able to weld something up in steel that would get your boat out of the water until the galvanized parts come in, painted steel will last for what you will need it for. From what I see they should be able to build something in a couple hours for you.

Looks like you have two bunks (sistered) on one side and none on the other. Can’t you just split the sister and move it over to the other side, temporarily? Then you could get the boat on the lift.

If you look at last pic, you can see the 2 bunks sitting on dock. That’s not the problem.

The problems is the metal cross frame. The frame is locked in by plates and u-bolts. The plates holes have ripped out.

Here is a pic of my best plate. Amongst other problems, it has also become further damaged by corrosion, due to my zincs being completely used up. The galvanic dialysis has weakened the lift. New plates are being shipped today, but won’t be here before storm

I technically could tie boatlift together, to keep it from separating, but this would probably damage the lift, since the tightness of the plates give it its strength.

I feel like a farmer, or an offroad racer could have that fixed in an hour, to get you through the storm. I might be missing something, but weld washers should solve the plate elongation. Yea, its welding galvanized, so don't take a breath.

I know, 4x4, 6x6 or 8x8 inch plates, drill holes a little paint and install for the storm

If I had called someone, I’d still be waiting for them to even look at it.

Remember guys…….. I live in a condo. I have a toolbox and some power tools.

I also need the parts, so I can further take lift apart. I also found a potential problem that needs to be addressed.

I also need to address “why” my bunk guides are bent at top of risers. I was very surprised to see that the bunks, which were sistered together, are now bending away from each other? This means I need to make some major adjustments. Probably need to ad another 3 risers to each side. But until I have the custom plates, I don’t want to unbolt the other side of lift. It’s barely hanging together as it is. It is visibly in bad shape. I failed to take pics of worst areas.

For those wondering. I rarely see the frame of my lift. Usually, only when I am having the boat serviced. I either see it raised with the boat in it, or lowered, where the frame is underwater. If it works…… it’s fine! Lol

Every once in a while I think about what it would be like to live there and have my boat on a lift behind the house. Then when these storms come calling I quickly remember why I live where I do.

Prayers to all the Florida peeps. Hope it dies down some before it hits.

I hate to ask, but is the government mobilizing a rapid response team in anticipation of recovery services? I feel like we are armed with pretty good forecasting data these days and should use it to proactively prepare. I assume the state of Florida is up to the task.

We've got the Fabtech show in Orlando next week, I've got people down there working and lots of travelers we are trying to re-route from all over the world. It pains me to even be working on our logistics planning for a trade show when I think about the people that are gonna get hit at home.

Wind speed is now 180mph. All our news agencies are using words such as “Record Setting””Catastrophic “”Not since Irma or Katrina”. The pics you see on news speak for themselves. It’s going to be bad.

Today, my city, got 3.3 inches of rain. We are expecting another 4 to 8 inches by Thursday. South Florida is flooding right now!

The flooding will be worse than the storm. However, there is nothing new about this statement. The flooding is the gift that keeps on giving.

The news just predicted that Siesta Key could get the largest storm surge in its history.

The entire state has something going on right now.

Other than the above, things are great! Lol

Since the storm has started tracking north…….. I cancelled my truck rental. It looks like I will ride it out on my dock.

I just wish my boatlift was not broken. My boat will have to ride out the wind, while tied to my whips, in my spare dock.

Last night was brutal, as far as wind. I ended up having to readjust lines, while driving rain and wind was hitting. No fun.

I am just waiting for a break in the weather to make further adjustments. This sucks!

Things that worry me…….. Pulling a cleat out of boat or piling. I can reinforce the piling, but not the boat. I plan on using the cleats on the opposite side of my boat as backup.

This is the first time that I have left my boat in water since I purchased it. It always goes onto my lift. Right now, I need parts for lift, which is missing the bunks on starboard side, so I cannot use it. However, I will probably lower it for the storm, to reduce the wind torque.

Did I mention that hurricanes suck? F**k

Almost asked the same question, then I started wondering where would you put it? The whole area is a flat pancake based on my two whole trips to Florida. My California thinking says to go park it up in the hills, but I don't think there's a lot of hills nearby?

I was going to put my boat in a backyard, but I learned earlier today, that my trailer is blocked by 4 boats on trailer. I have to move them all, just to get to my trailer. Then move everything around, so we can now fit 5 boats on trailers in my friends yard.

Btw, I didn’t cancel the truck. Enterprise called me and said the truck was no longer available. I was ok with that, since the storm was tracking north. I am going to ride it out. They are only predicting 60mph winds at my place.

You might want to consider hanging some fenders on your boat. I once counted on the whips to keep my boat off the dock in a windstorm, and one whip broke, while the other popped out of the mount. I ended up out on the dock in the wind, getting fenders tied on and the lines tightened. Fortunately, it was a pontoon, and I saw it as it was happening, so no damage, but it wasn’t fun.

The projected power outage is large for FL... and combine that with most if not all linemen are out in the Carolinas that are usually staged in FL to restore power will take longer than what it was with Ian. Yikes

I really won’t need the fenders. I already know that the whips will allow boat to touch dock. They will be doing U turns to do it. My pilings have piling pads. Nice ones. The lines on the boat are already at the exact length, to rest wind blown boat onto the 5” piling pads. Centered. I fully expect my boat to be pinned to the pilings, between the two Boatlifts. I’ll probably spend hours staring at it during the storm too! But heck, I’d be staring at it if it were on the lift too. I just know it would feel better seeing it on the lift.

I am going to put a line on the other side of my lift, so it does not become separated. I have a line on the other end, holding that side together. I am also going to tie my dock steps to a piling. I’d hate to see my $300 steps blown into the canal.

Just some general Florida info:

The west coast has a bigger threat of storm surge, than the east coast will ever have. This is because the west coast has the shallow continental shelf offshore, while the east coast has the 3000’ deep jet stream. The most storm surge possible on the east coast is only 3 to 4 feet.

Needless to say……….. there are a ton of boats being moved, and prepped throughout Florida right now. I stopped answering my phone. Lol

Talked to my niece a few minutes ago. Unless the path changes, they will take a direct hit, but they're at about 40' above sea level and about 20 miles inland. I told her to fill up the bathtubs with water. They are prepared for a long power outage. Candles, batteries, propane and BBQ, generator and lots of fuel for it . . . and plenty of alcohol, she says, LOL. That's my girl

My brother is a lineman on storm right now. They were working in North/South Carolinas, but are heading to Florida tomorrow evening. They plan to start work as soon as the storm passes, hopefully it won't be too long for them to restore power.

But I'll say it, as a "qualified captain", who's takes on jobs for vessel owners and as per previous threads, goes through every system to make sure things are tip top before leaving on a journey to deliver the vessel to the owner, your boat lift sure doesn't seem to get the same sort of attention.

If I lived in Florida, I'd put a significant amount of effort into being prepared for severe weather...which typically happens in Florida. Seems like you did not think this was important.
