How long do you guys keep your gasser trucks!!!

Just curious what your guys program is and why? Do you keep a truck for a few years, and trade it in, keep it til the powertrain warranty expires, or keep it til the doors fall off, or something else? Reason I'm asking is I have a 2020 Silverado 5.3 with 70K miles. Usually at that mileage, I'm looking to trade in my truck. Thinking of keeping it though as it is paid for and they want an arm and a leg for a new truck these days. It's in great condition, and I have done all the maintenance regularly so I know it has been taken care of. On the flip side, I do a lot of long road trips, not much towing though, and feel better with a lower mileage truck. Would just like some different perspective. Thanks!.

I usually don't keep anything over 100k. 17' Super duty (diesel) is getting close, so is our '16 explore that is now my commuter.

Have no plans on getting rid of them, really don't feel like dealing with dealerships either... Just did that last year getting the wife a new SUV..... was a pain in the ass until we found a great guy out of Santa Maria BMW..... looked at all manufactures..

I typically keep vehicles at least 10 years. We don’t typically have high mileage. When we were a young family the deal was that we would only have one vehicle payment. We first bought my truck. Once paid off the wife got her car. When that was paid off and my turn I was not ready to give up my truck so we waited a few more year for me to get the next vehicle.

1998 Silverado 1500 18 years.
2013 Sierra Denali 1500 11 years and going
2022 Sierra Denali 2500 2 years so far

I’d say run it. The two major things to go wrong on your truck are hit or miss. The tranny should be good for another 70k or so, 3-4k rebuild. The lifter issue either will or won’t happen, if it does that’s a 6-7k fix and you now have sent metal through your motor.

My Yukon had a lifter go bad and ate the cam at 107k.

1. 2018 Hyundai Sonata that was stolen with 70K on the clock. Would have driven that one for 300,000.

With the price of new, I can't imagine how selling anything without at least running up 150,000 miles. If it is trouble free at 75K you're leaving a lot of money on the table.

1997 Saturn 260K-my daily (oil hasnt been changed since ~130K or so)
2005 dodge truck 180K
1993 dodge truck 253K
1996 grand cherokee 200K- my sons daily


All the other vehicles we own are toys, and vary from super low mileage to who knows how many miles.

I’ve got a 2002 V-10 F250 with 210,000 and runs like a top. Going to run it until the frame turns to dust. I’d love to have a new truck but it’s just not in the cards anytime soon. So regular maintenance and even motor and transmission replacement when necessary is the route I’m going. I paid $8,800 for it. I can buy lots of gas and keep it “reliable” for the extra $90k a new truck would cost me.

I’ve got 196k on my 2013 Tundra. Got it as a hammy down from my dad with 7k miles. Don’t plan on keeping it past 230k but am actively looking for a new truck if I find a deal worth jumping on. I would have zero hesitation in driving it across the country tomorrow.

My brother ran a 2002 Yukon with a 5.3 that he towed his tourney boat with 230K, He would still have it but he crashed it.

I had my 04 5.3 Chevy Silverado LT 2wd, that I sold myself when working for Chevrolet, for 170k miles and 14 years. Just changed the oil and a couple of sets of tires, never even needed to do the brakes. Offers stacked up well for rebates and discounts in 2018 and I went and saw Jason Holley at Selman for my next one, crew cab LTZ 2wd. I have had that one now for just over 6 years and all of 20k miles, and plan on having it as long as possible again. I charge myself the same monthly payment to a separate account to handle any maintenance, hopefully none like the last one, and then down payment for the eventual replacement. Resale on it still is damn close to what I paid for it 6 years ago, however, the new ones are not even in the same ballpark as price, so gonna ride this as long as I can.

With the exception of my 89 Trans Am that was falling apart at 140000, every vehicle that I’ve owned has gone a minimum of 200000 before I sold them. Most were still running pretty good at that point it’s just that they were getting a bit long in tooth.
As a matter of fact one of the members here bought my 97 Explorer which had something like 280000 on it. As far as I know he didn’t have any problems with it ( might still have it).

I have 2 trucks. A 2001 Ford and a 2006 Chevy. Both have a similar 170,000 ish miles.

I haven’t bought a new truck because I don’t like todays new trucks. I’d rather have reliability and simplicity over all that overpriced electronic madness. Hell, I don’t even like all the stupid ugly steps every new truck has now. What was wrong with stepping up from the center of the rear bumper?

I might have to give in eventually, but for now I’m holding out.

That’s great, I have the same truck but ‘02 with 180k. Just replaced the trans cooler lines and radiator because the salt air here corroded the shit out of them. Great truck other than you can’t pass a gas station.

When I do give it to the boys, will be looking for another 2017-2019 F250. The new trucks are nice but the prices are just insane.

I'm in this same dilemma with keeping our Tahoe or selling. Historically I have never kept a car past 80k mi or 5 years. The Tahoe is a 2018 with 94k mi and still in immaculate cond. Other than the AC condenser going out (GM covered this in good faith) it has been 100% trouble free. Always do all the req maintenance religiously.

I almost pulled the trigger on a new Tahoe but just couldn't stomach a 1k/mo car payment and that is with a hefty down payment as well. On the other hand I do not want to have a car that I have to worry about breaking down on road trips etc.

From what I have seen the trans is the most common issue with the Tahoe/Burbs? I'm just torn on what to do. You can replace a trans for probably 5 months worth of payments on a new one so there's that.

I used California transmission in Ontario. $3K. It’s no brand new culhane but I had to do what I had to do to get up and running. We also have had to do that condenser as well. I overall like this platform they just have their issues like everything.

Neighbor had a garage queen 2006 Tundra Crew Cab . . . I told him if he'd ever sell it I'd like 1st crack.
He called me one day, & before he could say 'Are you still interested ________ " . . . . I was walking over to his house with cash.
Got it for $15K with 56K miles . . . . hopefully it's my last truck . . .4.7 vvti motor . . . easy to work on, plenty of power for my needs, and rides like caddy.

I was in a 2003 Tundra access cab w/ 160K at the time, paid $6K for it . . . put a group text out saying it was for sale . . . buddies step son came over & swooped it for $7K

I would have to have a complete 'BOAT LOAD' of disposable money before I'd consider buying new . . . my neighbor just brought home a new Tacoma. He had a 'friend' at the dealership and they marked it down from $64K to $60K . . . . . I can't even wrap my head around that . . . the $15K I paid for my truck wouldn't even be a decent down payment.

Kudos to people who have that kind of dough . . . not this kid.

My wife keeps bugging me to buy a new truck. I have 180 or 190K on my 05 Dmax. I put a transmission in it a few years ago. Even it was a gasser I'd still keep it, I just can't stomach a 75k+ truck. Even a 50k+ a 1/2 ton is hard. Toy around with getting a 1/2 ton for a DD and keeping the Dmax as a tow pig. But I'd rather have a nicer boat and/or SXS than a newer truck. I don't need to impress anyone on the road, just on the water and on the dunes ! LOL J/K.

I don't get excited about vehicles anymore. They just need to get me where I need to go.

I kind of have the same rule as others. My wife will always be in a new car, and only one car payment at a time.

Drive it until the wheels fall off unless you have extra cash to burn, Its not that we couldn't afford another truck, but our money is better spent/saved for other things....
