I’d say run it. The two major things to go wrong on your truck are hit or miss. The tranny should be good for another 70k or so, 3-4k rebuild. The lifter issue either will or won’t happen, if it does that’s a 6-7k fix and you now have sent metal through your motor.

My Yukon had a lifter go bad and ate the cam at 107k.

I legitimately couldn’t keep count of the cars I’ve owned. What stays and what goes depends on the specific vehicle and how well I like it. I had an old toyota with 500k+ miles on the chassis. Others have been up for sale almost immediately after buying.

If you like it and it’s paid for, drive it till the doors fall off. Then put new doors on :)

That’s great, I have the same truck but ‘02 with 180k. Just replaced the trans cooler lines and radiator because the salt air here corroded the shit out of them. Great truck other than you can’t pass a gas station.
My 02 2500HD Silverado has 130,000ish miles. It has the 6 liter gasser. It’s basically a driveway queen. We have two other cars so it basically goes to the dump or hauls something that won’t fit in the SUV.
Hell, I haven’t started it in a month. Might need to take it for a spin just because.

2001 Silverado 2500HD 8.1L Allison transmission - 275Kish miles on the truck. I would be stupid as hell to sell this and buy new, my buddy just bought a new Dodge to pull his 5th wheel - 100K$ - fuck that. I'll keep the gasser and the low gas mileage to tow what I have to. This truck has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. I'll rebuild the engine and trans rather than buy at these overinflated prices.

2014 silverado 4wd with 6.2 gasser. motor died at 95,000 just under the last 10 year 100,000 mile warranty. Brand new motor zero cost to me
With additional 20,000 miles on it will drive till doors fall off. Only issue is friggin paint is failing in a few places . looks like shit...
5k ??? for paint will be good as new

On that topic...any suggestions for a complete repaint in Havasu or O.C. ????

Even though my 05 Chevy is the best truck I have ever owned, I am going to sell it at 198k… It’s an extra vehicle and crew cab long bed, just never get used and we are not going to do anymore long trips in it. I will be sad.

Not that I have seen, maybe change the oil in shorter intervals? It’s seems to just be at random, some fail within 10k miles and some fail at 250k miles. The lifters have only gotten worse since covid started as well. It’s a shame as we really like our Yukon but just can’t trust it taking the family back and forth across the desert anymore so it will be getting traded in.

Gas vehicles in general... My Acadia with the notorious 3.8 V6 is still going strong at 165k miles. I need to do some cosmetic work (front seat interior and new headlights at some point), but it runs and drives like the day I bought it. I can't bring myself to pay new car (or even used car) prices these days. Momma gets a new lease every 3 years so she is happy.

My dad keeps wanting me to buy his 02 8.1 Silverado. Then gas milage keeps me away from that deal but there are days I wouldn't mind owning it.

2015 Silverado with a 6.2 purchased from another RDP member when it had 69000 miles on it. Now has 209000, replaced cam, lifters and valve springs at 180000 and plan on keeping it until the wheels fall off. Love driving the truck!
When you did that, did you remove the DoD stuff? If so any issues from doing that?

I have a 2016 with 189K mikes on the 6.2. I let the engine oil life monitor get between 40 and 30% and I’m getting the oil changed on it. I figure just keeping the oil fresh and clean has got to help.

Neighbor had a garage queen 2006 Tundra Crew Cab . . . I told him if he'd ever sell it I'd like 1st crack.
He called me one day, & before he could say 'Are you still interested ________ " . . . . I was walking over to his house with cash.
Got it for $15K with 56K miles . . . . hopefully it's my last truck . . .4.7 vvti motor . . . easy to work on, plenty of power for my needs, and rides like caddy.

I was in a 2003 Tundra access cab w/ 160K at the time, paid $6K for it . . . put a group text out saying it was for sale . . . buddies step son came over & swooped it for $7K

I would have to have a complete 'BOAT LOAD' of disposable money before I'd consider buying new . . . my neighbor just brought home a new Tacoma. He had a 'friend' at the dealership and they marked it down from $64K to $60K . . . . . I can't even wrap my head around that . . . the $15K I paid for my truck wouldn't even be a decent down payment.

Kudos to people who have that kind of dough . . . not this kid.
I had an 05 before I got the 07, never really wanted to sell it, only 19,000 miles and a couple years old, but my friend basically paid me what I paid new and wouldn't take no for an answer. Although the 07 had some improvements, I still miss that very refined interior and better ride, 07 is much more truck like.

Reading all these post I'd love to be in the 200K mile club. I'm currently at 325K and 475K miles with my trucks.
My old (1975) F-250 High boy got to almost 500000 on that 360 FE motor before I decided to swap out the motor for a 428 PI.
When I took the 360 apart the only thing that it really needed was valve job. No cylinder scuffing, minimal piston skirt wear and rod & main bearings were even in pretty decent shape.

I have a 2010 Tundra with 175k miles on it

Just towed a 6k lb. boat to powell and back. No issues just wish I didn’t get 8 miles per gallon.

I’m about to put a new alternator and fuel pump in it for preventative maintenance. OEM parts only.

I’m going to keep her till she dies.

But I do need a diesel as a second truck as I want a 5th wheel.

My daily driver is a 2006 Tacoma, 250k miles. Did have to replace the short block, got hot.
Bought a low mileage short block from the junkyard. Replaced all of the bolt on stuff.
Cost $6500 to build it, Planning on getting another 100k miles out of it.

After 08 year model ford diesel I switched to buying gas engines I drive them till the frame breaks. The diesels after 250thousand miles I was being raped on turbos injectors all type of crap that was the cost of a complete gas motor replacement. Just replaced a engine in 2015 f350 with the 6.2 gas engine that slipped the timing chain now it has a two years warranty again, mileage was 190thousand on it, my other truck a 2021 f350 with the 7.3 gas has 130thousand on it so hopefully it will make another 100thousand before any expenses. I like to buy my toys now than trade trucks every 2 years and give the dealers all the money

I think there really was a sweet spot about 4-5 years after the redesign of the GM gassers I.e. the modern LS with a 6 bolt main (1997?) and of course before DOD. Solid 250k motors. The ford triton was equally reliable during that time in term of lost of people you would know going into the 200k plus miles.

2010 F 150. 134k. Drove it 7000 miles last year. SUV back and forth to havasu. Will be much less this year.

I had a 2011 Silverado 1500 I put 300k miles on. Replaced about everything on that truck including the tranny twice and the motor once. After the second motor let go I said enough and bought a 23 Denali Ultimate.

I miss my old Silverado once a month when I make the payment but that’s about the only time. lol

270k on my 04 Silverad 2500 6.0. I don’t plan on getting rid of it. Taken a couple other 6.0s past 330k in work trucks.

Don’t want new truck prices and lack of reliability.

I have 2 trucks. A 2001 Ford and a 2006 Chevy. Both have a similar 170,000 ish miles.

I haven’t bought a new truck because I don’t like todays new trucks. I’d rather have reliability and simplicity over all that overpriced electronic madness. Hell, I don’t even like all the stupid ugly steps every new truck has now. What was wrong with stepping up from the center of the rear bumper?

I might have to give in eventually, but for now I’m holding out.
Like the way you think. I’m same way. Not into a warning for everything. Had a rental last week back east. Freakin lane assist sucks rear view camera beeps when close parallel parking. One tire went a pound or two below level the filling back up it beeped when it was 5 pounds over etc.

It was my 1st BRAND new car / truck I ever bought

2005 jeep LJ 34,000 bought used in 2006/7 w/ 22,000 - 256 I six w/ 6 speed manual 4:88 on 35’s
2012 jeep JK 40, 426 bought off a buddy at 34,000 V 6 automatic 5:13 gears on 37’s - my Prius !

Gassers, well I guess until I can afford a newer one? My wife drives an 04 Avalanche with 190 on it. Need to reseal the valve covers, but runs great. 5.3 Ls. I have an 04 Excursion, 5.4 2 valve. It has 200ish. I've done coil packs on it, bought it with 50ish on it in 06. My 83 chev, I'm the 3rd owner. 2nd 350, second 350 trans...odometer is on it's 2nd trip, maybe 3rd, 10k.

I’ve got a 2002 GM 1500HD in the driveway with shit paint that I only drive when the Tacoma won’t cut it …135K miles, been broken into countless times and stolen once. Not worth much and would cost me at least 30K to replace it with something as capable…so it’ll stick around.

I think I put 1400 miles on it last year, mostly hauling pallets of rotors or calipers between my supplier and my shop. One river trip to haul out the trailer.

Wife’s 4 runner I bought with 180K and a bad engine Back in 2018 or so…rebuilt it and sold it a month ago with 251K on it….ran fine, but was getting a bit crusty.

Gas shit will run just as long as anything with halfway decent maintenance….i had a 88 eldorado someone gave me with a bad radiator, had 627K miles on it, one trans, original engine. Had some intermittent security issue where sometimes it wouldn’t start unless you had the door open….aside from that, it drove like new.

The cheapo Fram filters actually have about the highest filtration efficiency of any filter on the market….which is why so many people have problems with them. They go into bypass when they clog up. The WIX filters that I’ve seen test data on might as well be screen doors…but they don’t clog up.


I can’t keep up with what the aftermarket is doing and who makes what so I just use OE filters on everything I own…at least the factory is held to a higher standard instead of no standard.

Also, with modern oils, changing at 5K is pointless in many cases. I run my Toyotas to 10K, sometimes a bit more between oil changes. All have no issues, and the OCI goes along with Toyota’s recommended service interval, if you use the appropriate oil product, which I do.

Domestic shit might be different…because it’s designed by fucktards.

That was me from my late 20s - till mid 40s, buy a new vehicle every 3 years or so.
I'm 61 and I don't think I'll ever buy another vehicle. GF has an 2014 Explorer Sport with less than 50k miles.
She drives it 4 miles to work....

All of my vehicles have over 100K miles on them now. I have a couple with 250K+ miles.

I actually considered buying a new truck a few months back but thinking about it I was just like “Oh fuck, I don’t want to go through that again” I keep mine ~10 years, they usually become more trouble to maintain than it is to buy a new one at about 300-350K miles. Current truck is a 2020 with 120K on it. Probably 6 more years.

As it turns out, I had a slab leak a few weeks ago and I’m cash-flowing the repairs. Cost about the same as a new truck so I’m really glad I sat on my money. I hate financing anything.

On my 2017 I put a DOD delete on so it never does the bypass. Hopefully it will prevent any problems but it they fail I will rebuild without that stuff.

Sold my 95 Ram with 160-ish on it. Had a couple of work trucks in between then and my current truck. Sitting at 150k now. Other than needing another set of exhaust manifolds, this one is holding up well. I'll probably start looking again at 180k or so...

My old 95 was a fun truck

Usually about ten years. that works out to be about 200,000 miles though for me. Current work truck is a 2013 F-150 with the 3.7 V 6. It runs so smooth you can't tell it is on at a stoplight. 206,000 right now on the clock. Still original brakes, no major repairs. The driver's seat needs to recovered.

I can't see paying $60K for a new one. I'm hoping it lasts a few more years.

2011 Tacoma, 201k, still running strong. My 16 year old daughter wants it. I'm giving it to her and buying my neighbor's 2020 Ram. Only 7k on it, so it's basically new.

2015 2500 silverado 6.0 gas 187k still going strong with no mechanical issues, brake issues only
1991 obs silverado V6 275k and still running strong.
the 99 dually in my profile pic had 190k on a 454 before I sold it

I will probably run the 2015 up to 250k before I buy another new truck.

I used to work for a company that had a fleet of 4.8 Chevy trucks. It took an act of good to get a PO for an oil changes. So none of us ever dealt with it. I drive my truck 30k miles without an oil change. Truck had 200k on it. Never skipped a beat.

Me and you both , Sir. I wish I would have never bought this New Bronco, but I had ordered it a year prior and at the time, the transmission went out in my Explorer, so I felt like it was a good move.

Between that and bad leasing decisions etc, I have made some stupid vehicle choices especially when I worked at Grody. Managers were pretty much assumed to drive the hottest best thing on the market at the time.

I absolutely loved mine until that 10 speed Transmission shit the bed and the way Ford treated me was laughable. Now I miss the third row seat even more since my Dad moved to San Tan and we cant all fit in anyone's car to go get dinner.

Speaking of, how you liking it here? I know the answer, but gotta ask !
