Probably shouldn't jump to conclusions, but at 15 seconds the black smoke starts pouring out and a right turn begins towards the bridge support, looks deliberate to me. Praying for the victims.
A tragedy either way, but I hope that's the case.Likely had it in reverse and give it all the beans but no way that thing is stopping.
Sure looks fishy, why so close to the pillar to begin with?Probably shouldn't jump to conclusions, but at 15 seconds the black smoke starts pouring out and a right turn begins towards the bridge support, looks deliberate to me. Praying for the victims.
Think it was on purpose?
Just to be clear when a ship of this size has any kind of momentum you don't just pump the brakes and stop. There appears to have been a power loss issue and possibly a mechanical issue which may effect steerage. If the pilot ordered hard reverse in an effort to regain control I could see the appearance of that movement. To be clear here, having spent time aboard an oil tanker and witnessing the result of a minor bumping of another bridge by another ship, This is pure speculation on my part based on my past experiences. I'm sure some of our experienced Mariners and Coasties can provide better input or opinions. Personally, I'll be interested to hear the reports after the Coast Guard and NTSB finish their investigations.Maybe I am seeing it differently then some, but looks like they past the upright then the boat reversed into it.
^^^this^^^It does not look intentional…….
I am also guessing that the freighter does not have enough insurance to cover the bridge replacement.
I am curious………. How much does it cost to replace bridge? I am guessing it’s north of 100 million. Probably a lot more.
Its one of the busiest ports in the US & 14, but has been growing... or now was....How busy is that port, and is that the only passage in and out? Cleanup will be massive...and rescue and recovery operations will difficult at best.
Very sad for those on the bridge ad their families
Well, if the Navy was put into play, I believe they have a massive facility with the required equipment fairly close by. It seems like this would be both good training, and a really good chance for the administration to earn brownie points. I'm sure the Navy folk would love to do work for our own. Now's a time to flex and get stuff done. This country has the ability, if allowed to try.I just drove this bridge in Google earth. That’s a big as bridge!
Demo is going to take a very long time and it’s the only way in or out.
Everyone: P Diddy is running, he's guilty AF
democrats: Look, a bridge collapse
You are misinterpreting it, take the attention off of the biden supporting sex trafficker and look over here at a bridge collapse.I guess I'm a Democrat because I care a whole lot more about the bridge than I do about P Diddy. Maybe I'm misinterpreting your post.
Norfolk is right die. The bay 160 miles as the crow flies.Well, if the Navy was put into play, I believe they have a massive facility with the required equipment fairly close by. Yeah, I get that. Wag the dog, right? You are misinterpreting it, take the attention off of the biden supporting sex trafficker and look over here at a bridge collapse.
For the record I don't believe this to be intentional but it's weird that the "Hey look over here not over there" shit happens quite often.
One news report said two harbor pilots were on board in addition to the crew. That should (only help) move the cause away from deliberate.
God help those in the water. Night time, 50 ft deep and 47 degrees.
I spoke to my brother who has been on a west coast oil tanker for a decade and is a 2nd mate now. He said that although he has never been on a container ship, he wouldn't expect a container ship to be tug assisted until berthing. I find that kind of crazy. Would you expect this ship to be tug assisted at this point in the waterway? Would a tug have any chance of keeping this catastrophe from occurring?Very good video link posted by inmate Wolskis. There will be no shortage of accusations, assumptions and 'experts'. This video showed only the facts, as currently known. I've passed under that bridge many times. We operated out of Baltimore for over a year. Passed under that bridge every time we arrived or departed. We always used a pilot. Recall there were Chesapeake Bay pilots and local harbor pilots. That area is known as the Patapsco River. Although, as I recall it didn't feel like a river, no strong currents. Tidal range was only about 1.5 ft. In any case, pilots are there to advise only, using their local knowledge and giving speed and steering commands. Given the apparent power failures, the Master very likely took command from the pilot when they occurred. (Yes, that's just an assumption). I found the harbor to be well marked and safe. Safer than the bad neighborhood near our berth, which was just to the west of the Cruise Ship terminal. The cause of this catastrophe will be determined. Maresk Shipping was the operator. Largest shipping company in the world. The US Navy does have a substantial presence in Norfolk VA. That's at the south end of Chesapeake Bay, Baltimore is at the north end. Baltimore is a very busy commercial port. Until they get the destroyed bridge debris cleared, no ships can enter or depart.
