"Movies And The Real Old West"
The fast draw did not exist
Revolvers were not worn low slung
Revolvers were generally not fired from the hip
Fanning a revolver was unheard of
The buscadero holster wasn’t designed until the 1920s
Gunslinger and gunfighter are movie terms
Face downs in the street only happened a couple times
More men were killed with knives in barrooms than by firearms
Most cowboys on the range did not carry revolvers, most carried
rifles in saddle boots
Indians preferred to fight at night
Cavalry troopers did not wear yellow bandanas
There was no such military command as Forward Ho!
Most women wore dresses not jeans and rode horses side saddle
Chaps were only worn when herding cattle
There was no such title as Town Sheriff, Sherriff’s enforced laws in the entire county, towns were policed by Marshals
Indians did not attack a wagon train circle by riding in circles around it
Most western forts did not have walls
Army chevron’s were not worn on shirts
One piece red long underwear did not exist until after 1900
Mexican Bandidos did not wear bandoleers
String bowties are 20th century
Panel front shirts were not worn with one top corner unbuttoned and hanging down
Stage coaches did not carry a strongbox full of gold on every run, most holdups were made to rob the passengers
Most men did not carry revolvers all day, every day
The Winchester lever action rifle was “The gun that won the west” not the Colt revolver

Awesome piece of factual history, I think the movie version is better IMO, and perhaps the movie version might work quite well in this day and age.

I don’t think you can be allowed to post that until after Clint Eastwood is dead.

But yeah, you watch a lot of old westerns and you’d think murder was a regular and normal occurrence and guys just walked around shooting everyone they didn’t like.

The most obvious thing that didn't exist in the old west, and this is wrong in the pic RD posted, there were no belts worn on trousers because the belt loop had not been invented until 1922. First used on Levis.
All the westerns we grew up watching, even to this day, got it wrong.

Makes sense, pretty much in line with how Hollywood presents everything - wrong in the name of entertainment.

Growing up how many stereotypes were based off movies and tv shows. There wasn’t a way to fact check anything besides looking it up in World Book encyclopedia, however the internet just produced a new type of ignorance.

HAHA...One has to question your life choices if you look to movies and stories for factual info on history unless it states "true story".

I remember when the internet first came out and started becoming popular. A friend of mine’s dad said “they will rewrite all history with that”. He wasn’t wrong.. now with agendas it is getting worse.

Just some trivia……..

The majority of all the Westerns you have seen in movies and television, were shot in the California Desert. The Mojave desert being at the top of the list.

I am sure some of you off roaders have seen movies and recognized the background.

Cowboys as well. Not to be confused with ranchers or farmers. They were the people that moved cattle from the open range to train depots to be taken to slaughter. They were around for only about 5 years before someone invented barb wire. Barb wire prevented theft of someone else’s cattle branded or not. Open range, fair game. The overwhelming majority of cowboys were black or Hispanic. Hollywood lied and still does.

So was the holster and belt around the waist what held the pants up too if there was no actual belt on the pants themselves?
