So was the holster and belt around the waist what held the pants up too if there was no actual belt on the pants themselves?

There was no belt to hold up your pants and the gun belt/holster would pull them down.
You're right suspenders and on the back of the pants there was an adjuster as well. Plus buttons for the suspenders.

It is to my understanding that in Oklahoma.
It is still legal to hang a person for stealing a horse. I think it's still in the law books there.

this makes for funny reading, old laws still on the books. TN I think, laws passed at different times over the years, and all still apply.

when riding a bicycle one must; keep both hands on handlebars at all times, use appropriate hand signals when turning or stopping, alert pedestrians with horn or bell when approaching etc.

My son used to live out in Oklahoma and he was telling me about some of the laws that they have there and some of them are pretty crazy.

You know Dave--if you dont have anything nice to say, then dont say anything at all please.
I like my Westerns they way they have always been.
BTW--Costner is coming out with a new 2 part movie called Horizon.
looking forward to seeing this.

But stealing a car used to get you a night or two in the pokey and free trip to the Graybar Hotel, now they put you in a cell for a hour or two and tell you to think about what you did. You don't even get your hand smacked, because that's assault, and they let you out to go cause more mayhem - at least here in California, the land of fruits and nuts.

I shoot some steel matches with a 1911 in a gun belt and holster and the belt is too big and not designed to go through the belt loops and it does not pull my pants down it does hold them up better than no belt.
I can also tell you i would not want to were it all day every day and while I’m not a fan of the Glock the reduced weight must make a big difference for the cops that have to were them all day

"Movies And The Real Old West"
The fast draw did not exist
Revolvers were not worn low slung
Revolvers were generally not fired from the hip
Fanning a revolver was unheard of
The buscadero holster wasn’t designed until the 1920s
Gunslinger and gunfighter are movie terms
Face downs in the street only happened a couple times
More men were killed with knives in barrooms than by firearms
Most cowboys on the range did not carry revolvers, most carried
rifles in saddle boots
Indians preferred to fight at night
Cavalry troopers did not wear yellow bandanas
There was no such military command as Forward Ho!
Most women wore dresses not jeans and rode horses side saddle
Chaps were only worn when herding cattle
There was no such title as Town Sheriff, Sherriff’s enforced laws in the entire county, towns were policed by Marshals
Indians did not attack a wagon train circle by riding in circles around it
Most western forts did not have walls
Army chevron’s were not worn on shirts
One piece red long underwear did not exist until after 1900
Mexican Bandidos did not wear bandoleers
String bowties are 20th century
Panel front shirts were not worn with one top corner unbuttoned and hanging down
Stage coaches did not carry a strongbox full of gold on every run, most holdups were made to rob the passengers
Most men did not carry revolvers all day, every day
The Winchester lever action rifle was “The gun that won the west” not the Colt revolver

Having a father that was one of most influential period correct cowboy gun leather craftsman of the past 50 year as well as a old west historian; it made it hard to enjoy most westerns. 😆

My uncle (my dads brother) was also a historical resource for many westerns from the mini series Centennial and Far and Away wirh Tom cruise to Dances with Wolves (all three which he was also in as an actor). He would tell me stories about how he'd argue with production on how its "supposed to be".

My Uncle as Lt Tucker in Dances With Wolves. I own the jacket and hat he wore on set and was given to me by his wifeafter he passed from Alzheimers. He was the only other soldier on a horse following Kevin Costner when he was trying to kill himself in front of the southern soldiers.

My father about 10 years ago. He can no longer walk and his health is really bad these days. Cowboy stuff, 60s Fords, old west history is what my father was about! He absolutely hated the SASS (single action shooting society). Always hated the Hollywood aspect of it and how nobody dressed or did anything period correct.

Sorry to hear your father is not doing well 😔 The race against time is hard on our bodies, and yet we stay in the race, though no one has ever one. I hope you and your girl are doing well, it can be hard.

That rant RD posted is a FaceBook meme. There’s probably as much chance as it being accurate as what it’s calling out.

Here is an interesting bit of info. There were literally hundreds of gun manufacturers back in those days who produced some fine firearms that did not survive long. One of the reasons was proprietary ammunition. They all wanted to be unique or thought their cartridge was better than the rest. A significant reason why Winchester and Colt thrived was a little known "gentleman's agreement" between the two companies. Winchester had plans for a revolver and Colt has actually produced a few rifles that were pretty good. The CEO's for both companies got together and agreed that Winchester would stay in the rifle business and Colt would stay in the revolver/pistol business. Colt chambered most of their revolvers in Winchester calibers which made them much more appealing as one would only have to carry ammo in one caliber. This also made life easier for the store owner as they did not have to stock so many different calibers of ammo as well. The Winchester ammo was available at most any mercantile store.

I just watched this movie for the first time in about 25 years last weekend. Forgot how damn funny it was. And how we used to be able to make fun of others and laugh about it. Nobody got offended.
It turned 50 just a few weeks ago.
