Did you know a Mark Gobel. Would have been a couple years ahead of you. He was a QB @ Kennedy.

Yes I did...a loooooooooong time ago.

:D Do you miss it?

I have a little over a year of eligibility left, and don't know what I'm going to do after I'm done with polo...there aren't too many masters programs around....:(

Best sport around!

I miss it. I'm a little too old for a masters program but if I had the time, I wouldn't mind helping coach a high school team here. It's not very big here but there are a few teams. I jump in a local pool here every so often just to swim and keep in shape (unfortunately not often enough and the only shape I'm in is pair shape). I got a little burned out after high school turned down some offers for swimming. After a couple of years I regretted it.

I was burnt out of swimming after high school, but took the opportunity to play college polo, and after last year almost quit to finish school, decided against it and I'm glad I stuck with it... would have been a regret if I didn't! I too think of coaching, don't know what the next couple of years bring, and what level I would coach at!

I think I will always jump in a pool to swim some laps, just not at 6:00 in the morning! Definitely won't miss that part of it!

I didn't miss that at all. Although I was in a masters swim program a number of years ago when I lived in Seattle. I was in the pool at 5am. Never thought I'd do that!!!!

As far as coaching, look in the CIF website. They post a lot of asst. coaching job there. Also go back to your old high school. They're always looking for help. It's a foot in the door.

This is how far back I go. The sprinter started on the side so the ref could drop the ball and look at the ear guards we had. We had just got those hats with the "new & improved" ear guards.

I don't know if I could ever motivate myself to jump in the pool that early if I didn't have to be there, if I join a team after college and they practice that early, it makes it a little easier!

That's an awesome picture! We still start on the wall too sometimes, other times from the lane line, and then sometimes from the 2 meter line and the ref generally drops the ball in, very rare do we spring from the middle with the ring.

I will probably never go back to coach at my high school..but willing to look at areas around it! Thanks for the advice on the CIF website, I'll have to check that out.

The rules have changed a lot in the last couple of years, kind of going back to some of the older rules.

Not the greatest picture, but here's to show that not much has changed!

Nice pic. I think what really makes me feel old now is that your picture is clear and in color. Mine was fuzzy and in black & white. I do miss it though.

I don't miss the swimming one bit!! I was just telling my wife the other day, jumping in the pool for the last time in college after 12 years of competitive swimming was one of the happiest moments in my life. It did pay for college though, which was great. I think I would have liked polo much more, but water polo @ distance swimming don't mix very well.

5:00-6:30 AM Swim/Polo practice
2:00-5:00 PM Swim/Polo Practice
6:00-8:00 PM AAU Swim Club Practice

Did that nearly every day in season for 4 years in HS. Not to mention the 7 years prior to HS that I did the AAU thing. I was one of those guys that walked around with green hair. It wasn't until I went in the Coast Guard that I found out my hair was actually brown, not blonde with green tint.

We didn't have the ear guards when I played. Just the little holes cut out. That's probably where some of my hearing loss comes from.

Now the Surf Team was another story. I never complained about going to surf "practice" at 5:00 AM and after school every day. :D

I was a much better swimmer than polo player but I liked polo a lot better.
I hated distance swimming. A 200 was the longest I ever wanted to do. I agree that your last swim workout is a happy moment but I regret not playing college polo. I only received offers for swimming. Nothing of any great significance. Had a few visits and promises. I was done though.

I had a couple of people I knew that played on the national team a long time ago that were also distance swimmers. I don't know that that would have gotten in the way. Most of the good polo players that swam distance were really good for wearing out the other team. They just didn't have the really good fast break.

Our coach pushed for no polo with the distance swimmers, because lifting your head up & swimming with the ball, made the stroke really short & choppy. I had it pretty bad, 1650, 500, 200 free & fly were my events. Unfortunately theres only so much a person can do about deciding if they're a sprinter or distance. The genetic make-up pretty much decides tha for you.

Depending on who we were up against I did either the 200 IM or the 200, 100 or the 100 back, & 4X100 relay. Every so often if the coach was pissed at me he through me in the 500. I hated that.

As far as genetic make-up, my son's finding out about that one. His senior year the track coach talked him into doing hurdles instead of playing lacrosse. He'd never done track.
After being there for a week they found he was a pretty good distance runner. He's running the 3200, 1600, & the 800. He likes the 800, and doesn't mind the 1600, but hates the idea of the 3200, and he doesn't like any combination in the same day.

I don't miss swimming for the practices or the little meets, but I miss it for CIF, just cuz during that part of the season it was tapering!! I was a sprint freestyle 50's and 100's only....my coach tried me in distance, but found out pretty quick that it was a bad idea!

haha, i think this is the life of every aquatic participant except I went to club polo...I would just hate going from the 2-5 practice to the 6-8 practice, I would never take off my suit, cuz there is nothing worse than the feeling of putting on a wet suit after your dry....ugh

Come on....dig through those pictures and bust one out of the speedo and blond hair days! :D
