Having been here 22 years now and loving Havasu for the first 15 years or so, I am hear to say it has become a pain in the ass with traffic, it really has but having said that it does beat the hell out of living in So Cal !!!!!
All of the other opinions for the most part are true, but its TOO FUCKING CROWDED And it is expensive!!!!!!!!!

You used to be able to do this. Bullhead gets a few charters from the midwest during snowbird season.
AA (AmericaWest) had flights from PHX and OC back in the days.
I had the joy of having AmericaWest as a client (back in my external audit days) - those segment never turned a profit.
The year they stopped the flights, not 1 flight to Havasu turned a profit. Back in the days, that was the key criteria for AmericaWest to pull out of a market.

Everyone says they want flights, yet no one used it when they did.

When still working, the Ford plane would drop us off at Havasu airport. Or we would fly commercial into Havasu. The airport would let us leave vehicles in the parking lot no charge keys at the Hertz desk. Next folks coming in just asked for them.

Sometimes family would visit and fly into Havasu. Very convenient.

I enjoy the walking/bike paths on the island and the parks in the channel. They seem busy with all sorts of different people in the winter every time I'm out walking. I also enjoy Sara park. I think the city does a great job with managing them.

It's the desert, so it is easy for it to look shabby. The heat is hard on things so places get run down quickly.
It seems the whole place was built on a weak foundation of turning worthless land into a quick buck. I'm sure the marketing material in the late 60s was a sight to see. The roads make no sense to me since cars were big as whales when this place was built.

I agree with the comment on hotels. They are all shit. We stayed at the London Bridget resort one night and it is not much better than a motel.

I also agree with the comments about LHC knowing what it wants to be when it grows up. I don't think city leaders are thinking that far ahead.

It reminds me of seeing a bar with all the lights on. Make it work for the weekend crowd and grab money until the roof collapses.

Boomers split a candy bar three ways because it is in their nature. I would not call it a snowbird thing, because the Boomers are aging out. However, I don't see GenX doing the snowbird thing at the same level as the Boomers. Too feral for the structure and cadence of Bingo, Bunco, Card Match on the daily.

This is a Resort Town and now people wonder why or think it's broken because it doesn't have the same as a major city..

Retirement is and will continue to be the play here. Not only retirees of age but of ones that can financially early. Housing cost is rapidly squeezing the workers out of town.

The "Affordable Housing" drum is not only broken its non-existent and will never be, if you can't understand that and why. . Seek mental help.

What this town needs is less people thinking it needs to be something it's not.

If you're wanting a business here that's needed and profitable..

To put it in perspective, my Dad just bought a BRAND new home, outside San Tan Valley, 3 bed 2 bath etc, 260k. His mortgage is like 1600$ a month.

in Havasu, that gets you a mobile home maybe.

The other place we live is also a tourist destination smashed against a farming community. The difference is that it's only attractive to tourists July-Sept and it is way smaller, so you get to see this argument way out face to face. But it is exactly what you have pointed out.


FWIW the biggest attraction for us that has not been touched on is how easy we've made friends here in LHC, across multiple demographics and from multiple locations. Some are weekend warrior Californians who we love to tease, and some are Canadians, who we love to tease and some are from other states who we love to tease.

Angie summarized our wish-list well; No Interstate, Water, favorable weather, enough services to get by and an abundance out outdoor recreation choices.

There is definitely lack of opportunity for kids growing up out there, but they need to be realistic and go start a life somewhere else. The number of people I see complaining on social media about the job market for young people is ridiculous. There are opportunities in the trades, but the job market is not that of a major metro area.

Not everyone is cut out to be a business owner, which seems like the only way to really "make it" in Havasu and many other smaller communities. There aren't many executive positions or even office positions there where one would normally show up to work in a suit. I don't really see employees in the trades making $50/+ hour in places like Havasu, like they can down in LA...the owner makes money, but the worker bees?. Havasu doesn't have a financial district, for example. Are there any large-ish business that produce anything headquarted in Havasu?....I know about Sterilite, but I think that's more of just a factory. It doesn't make much sense to have a business like that in a place like Havasu....they tend to be closer to shipping ports, major highways, rail, and customer base.

I think the point is that Havasu will always be a service economy, with the exception of a few niche markets where location makes no difference.

Recently living here full time after having a vacation place here. Attracted by the boating, offroading, and central location for travels to Baja and Colorado. Retired which enables us to live where the job market is poor. Like to see a Sprouts or Trader Joes instead of the Safeway and medical care is not what it could be even for a town this size. Will probably need to go to a bigger city if we get to a point of wanting assisted living or develop medial issues that are beyond what we can deal with in Havasu.

Kids growing up and wanting to stay here probably need to get into the trades with an eye to self employment or developing a small trades business. I don't see significant industry ever developing here. Employee reasonable cost housing is something the city could help address, there is lots of space for it on the north end by the big box stores. There are always niches for entreprenurial people to build small businesses, even in Havasu.

We are surprised the town can't support commercial flights. Lived in Durango CO for a few years which is 1/3 the size of Havasu and there were daily flights to PHX and other places. I flew every 2-3 weeks and the flights were mostly full.

I am just curious and totally serious. I am not a drinker, what is considered a legit liquor store? Many moons ago there was WineTime liquors, but it got tore down to build a business complex or something over on Lake Havasu Avenue. I think it’s where Anytime fitness is now.

A store that sells more than one kind of potato vodka, for starters. Several sizes of Kahlua. Local whiskeys and beer. Craft bourbons. Craft bitters and syrups. A variety of quality cherries and bloody mary garnishes. It doesn't have to be a BevMo. These images are from Bozeman (pop 50+K). I couldn't find any from ours in Polson, but it looks a lot similar. Notice in the first two images, there aren't any clear liquors. The vodka and gin is on another wall. Another will have all the liqueurs and mixes. Usually the local stuff is on display on several shorter columns in the center of the store. Small wine and beer selection because you can get that at the grocery store.

I bring Vodka and Gin from home to Havasu because I can't get what I like here.

50 years ago, LHC had 9000 residents, a diversified economy (tourism and manufacturing), an airport with scheduled air service and great schools. Not sure its maturation is much different than other small towns in the US.

Losing ASU LH was a huge loss. Very inexpensive way for a LH kid to get a college education.

Durango pulls airline passenger traffic from a very wide region... And at one time the City and ski resorts subsidized the service to the tune of several million dollars a year. I don't think that is the case anymore but that is what it took to build enough demand for the air carrier capacity you see today.

Also, economic downturns in Northwestern NM lead to the curtailment of flights into and out of the airport in that city. At one time Farmington has multiple jet flights per day. Durango was well positioned to pick up the slack when the air travel returned to the region.

I don't see Havasu being in the same situation, both based on population and geography, unless you can convince a group to start guaranteeing money to an airline to serve the area.

I agree...People need to stop trying to turn Havasu into SoCal. I personally like Havasu like it is. It's a resort/vacation/retirement town in the middle of the desert with no highway running through, no commercial flights, etc.

The last thing I'd want is a Costco or Trader Joes. As mentioned earlier...COSTCO IS NOT COMING TO HAVASU. That is direct from the source who is involved in these decisions.

Yep, exactly the point I was trying to make. When I was a young cop in SoCal I looked at LE jobs in Havasu after we bought our house there. I thought it might be a good move. Well, the pay for cops and firefighters was absolute crap. I stand by my statement that opportunities are limited out there.

I am curious affordable condos/apartments has been brought up a couple times.. These investors that are doing storage units why wouldn't they migrate to apartment buildings in Havasu? I am sure you could get a good ROI if the demand is there. I think you can rent a cheap house for the same cost of a lake havasu apartment thus you dont see apartments being build.

It doesn’t pencil. We have ran performas 10
ways, what feels like 10 times now. It has yet to pencil out. We are currently running one using LITEC and am curious where it lands and what the tail would be.

be careful in that little farm they get sprayed by the indian crop duster plane god only knows what chemicals (they grow hay in about 3 to 4 days)

I've never been up there. Too far of a drive for me, but good to know.

Open at 7am, for old guys that cant sleep in. Close at 8pm, no reason to stay open later.

7am is 3 hours too late. It could close at 6pm.
