Was he sleeping and he woke up freaking out?

Tough situation for the police.

Excuse wasn't working. White lives matter?

Bummer for everyone, cops didn't go to work expecting the night to go south. If he was sleeping and woke up to the light in his eyes, was wasted, then maybe he truly was freaking out. Or, mental issue which is also pretty sad.

Sounds Ike the police were there for a domestic of some kind. Normal people don't "sleep" with knives in there hands. I'd "guess" to say he was pretending to be asleep and waiting for police to come busting in. But that is 100% speculation.

Yeah he must have been in a real deep sleep if he didn't hear them talking to him that whole time. These officers have tough choices to make every day.

Fuck being a cop. That dude gave them no choice. Shitty that they're put in that situation.

There's always someone who thinks a taser would work or shoot them in the legs lol. Most of the time these situations can never take place without the perp participating in some way.

BTW - what the fuck has happened to this board? We're no longer cop bashers [emoji2]

Damn, straight for the chest shot. Wonder why they didn't aim a little lower, but who knows. That seemed to escalate quickly. Maybe that guy just didn't like to be woken up before his alarm clock. :)

Btw- I'm sure that most of us here sleep with a knife or some other weapon near the bed. :cool

Where is it they should be aiming lower at and what would be the benefit to either party?

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought it was an officer's duty to not only protect themselves, but the person who they're detaining. I think a shot to the knee cap or anywhere else below the waist would have given the police the advantage they needed to safely get him into handcuffs. Like I said, things escalated quickly so who knows.

Edit: I forgot to respond to your 2nd question. The benefit to the guy with the knife is that he wouldn't be dead. For the cops, I'm sure (well, I'd imagine) that's it not easy to sleep at night after killing someone.

Correct me if I am wrong but I was always under the impression that once an officers gun is "unholstered" then "aimed" then "fired" it is to not maim but to kill.

The forum is aging. In another 10 years we will all have pontoons and making threads about kids or dogs walking across our desert rock lawns, and how it is so much better now that there is a 35MPH speed limit on all waterways.

Not to go back and forth on this subject but that would be one hell of shot. Knee cap or any limb for that matter. Then this can go the direction that IF you did hit that target is it going to stop him because now they are up close and personal. Just a shitty deal all around

Real difficult trying to make a precision knee cap shot when someone is trying to kill you. All police firearms training is to shoot high in the chest. Think heart/lungs. Belly shots rarely put people down right away. Extremity shots are reserved for TV and movies. You are trained to stop that threat as quickly as possible.

How about a .40 under the pillow next to me? In a quick access safe, of course...

A deranged knit wit with a knife can really fuck somebody up from 5 to 10 feet away, ending and officers career or possibly his life. They did the right thing. It's too bad the guy died but the cops are going to go home to their families!

True. I listened to the 911 calls, dude seemed to be nuts and possibly on drugs. In the 3rd call, the dad said his son was arrested for DV against his gf days before this event. The guy is dead and that sucks, but it doesn't sound like Lake Havasu lost one of it's best residents. :cool

God only knows how that father feels. Not saying it's his fault for calling 911, sounded like he had to, but man, that's got to be a tough pill to swallow.

A shot disabling him would have resulted in taxpayers paying his medical bill. Cremation is much more affordable under Obamacare.

This is a clear example of people having no respect for authority. He committed a crime by threatening family members. He was given the opportunity to come out of his room with his hands up several times but he refused. Its unfortunate that he lost his life but Cops did what they where trained to do. Body cameras saved these officers careers by showing the truth. God bless those officers.

That city has more problems than the bathroom stall at China Buffet.

I asked that question when I was a teenager to an older CHP friend of my dads - He told me that LEO never shoot to wound...if it comes down to firing a weapon it's intended to kill, and it's because the situation has been pushed to that level. There is no "shoot em in the leg" like the movies I guess
