a little update....

10 weeks have passed.
I weighed in this Morning at 378. 62 lbs since surgery. Almost 100 lbs since i made the decision to get healthier. I havent really worked out yet. Knees are still an issue. But i am so much more active. So much more energetic. And my happiness is up 100%. Doctor is satisfied with 10 lbs a month. Im doing 25+ without working hard.

Changing the way you eat is difficult. But its simply mind over matter. I am basically eating only protein...chicken eggs cheese protein drink. I have been able to mix in a couple different foods here lately. Had my first fruits in a long time. Added cooked vegetables and turkey sausage. The portions tho would make anyone laugh. It started with 1 ou portions and im up to 3 now. I plan to keep it there for as long as possible. Still drinking water only (with crystal light lemonade packs 0 calories) 64 ounces + per dday. Less than 700 calories a day. Pissing like a race horse and only poopin every 4 days. Some of these poops have ripped my butthole apart. Probably the hardest thing about this whole thing. Its like having a baby every 4 days. Push, Scream, wait 2 minutes, Push, Scream, wait 2 minutes, and when it finally releases o man....Butthole hurts for few hours after.

The cool thing about all this is knowing you are full. Man if i eat too fast or too much it hurts for real. Its an awful feeling. Have to eat slow, chew a lot before swallowing, but my mind still thinks gobble gobble. Thats a tough transition. But when you screw up you pay the price.

Im happy but ill be honest. I want it all gone now. Have a long road ahead but seeing the weight drop off is really cool. Next milestone is to get in the 350s...If i could get working out this fat would fly off. I just hate working out.
Thanks for the update. Looking forward to you getting to the point that your knees don’t hurt as much. I know that my old body feels the pain I deserve for having all the fun I have had over the years.

Thanks for the update, Congrats on the progress I suspect many on here like myself are following along.

I visited with my doctor after reading the beginning of this and he has asked that I loose 25 lbs by changing habits before taking the plunge. As you said the change in habits is important. Unfortunately my habits haven't made a huge change. Still working on it.

I feel you on the serious growlers, I have sat there thinking how do I handle these when I am 80, probably give myself an aneurysm.

… Regarding the pooping …you might want to try a high dosage of meta-Meusel middle of the day… And then before going to bed at night,… have a fairly large milligram dosage of Phillips milk of magnesia… softens the stools… So you don’t go through the agonizing pain from having to push too hard… The dosages of both items would have to be adjusted as per the individual…
… you really should poop every morning when you get out of bed… although I suppose everybody is different???..,

I wish you luck but I think this highlights how bad our medical system is. Doctors know nothing about nutrition and what is needed to loose weight and keep it off. The standard american diet of eating vegtable oils, sugar, breads/ flour is the cause of the obesity epicdemic.

Gastric bypass brings its own set of troubles. Many vitamins that are needed can not be aborbed. The whole digestive track has been disrupted. The process of losing weight is different.

… All I can say is read this book…and do it… I followed it in detail in the 90s …what a world of difference…built my own solar power system while on this diet …If I would’ve stuck to the diet, I most likely wouldn’t of ended up in the hospital 25 or so years later???…

…Probably should’ve added this in the first place, but I still am not back to my old self…
… This is essentially a vegetarian cleanse… and a switch over to vegetarianism… the vegetarian, cleanse highly recommended… The switch over to vegetarianism… up to one’s self…
… The cleanse can be done with their green powders… which are powdered green vegetables… Or can be done with large amounts of green vegetables…
… I did it with large amounts of green vegetables… It takes longer, but it’s just as effective…
… I lost 30 pounds… Which I really needed to do…
…My blood work went from scaring my family physician to …after the cleanse he could not believe it…My blood work was perfect….Dunno???…

Just wanted to throw this out there. If your knees are fucked, I've had both of mine tuned up from injuries, you might give swimming a thought. Because of another injury, not related to my knees, I started swimming 20 odd years ago. Can't run unless someone is chasing me, use to jump rope 45 minutes a day which I really liked doing and can't do that, so swimming is it for me. Couldn't do a single length of the pool at the Y the first day. Worked up to 5 min, then 10 and so on until I got to where I am today, 3 miles a day. Takes an hour, good cardio, easy on the joints and keeps the weight off. Obviously swimming that long everyday isn't for everyone. 30 minutes would give me the same results but I love getting in that zone, maybe like a crazy runner's zone. I don't stop, don't count laps, hell I don't even think about swimming, just get lost in thought. I joke that I'm just trying to out swim whatever's trying to kill me. Creeping up on 70 and losing friends at an alarming rate these last 3 years.

I'm met dozens of people on the same journey as you through the years, some stuck with the pool, some bailed after the first week. The transformation of the ones that stuck wth it are impressive. I know diet is a major factor too.

Good luck.

@Dirtbag Awesome choice to better your life. Once you get your mind around it everything will fall into place, and like others have said, it won't be something you look at like a "diet", it will just be the normal.

I recently challenged myself to drop some weight. All I have done is set my times to eat (some call this intermittent fasting), haven't changed anything I was eating or drinking, and I've lost 14 lbs. over about 2 months. What I found was I was eating because I really enjoy it, not because I was hungry or actually needed fuel for the body. I'm a closet foody so to speak 😂

So now I get up, workout, first meal is at 8am, last meal is at 4pm. Anything after 4pm is either coffee, water, or beer.... yes beer. Pont being, you gotta do what you gotta do for yourself and what will realistically work for you. I knew there was no way I was getting rid of some of my vice's, but I can make them work within reasonable parameters.

you are spot on....diet is everything...looking back only a few months i wonder if i even needed the surgery.... the diet is everything... however the surgery forced me to change the diet. and now my stomach cant handle the same amounts of food so there is that....

also there is a massive difference between gastric bypass and lapband surgery. My doctor completely talked me out of gastric bypass. Its no different than heart bypass. They are changing your plumbing and that brings in so many dangers. The lapband is basically just cutting the stomach and making it smaller. but its still your stomach and the plumbing doesnt change. If you are thinking about these procedures make sure to ask your doctors the differences and the risks.....I went in asking for the bypass and within 2 minutes I wasnt getting the bypass.

we have a pool at home and before surgery i was doing water aerobics....its definitely easier on the body. We have a community pool down the way that is olympic sized....thats a great idea...didnt even think of just getting into swimming.

that was my problem with food....i just love food...its not about being hungry at all...i just love the tastes...so far thats been the most difficult part of this journey. I am constantly eating the same things over and over again and its boring....theres plenty of recipes out there but i just choose to do the easy stuff. 1 egg scrambled over turkey sausage with cheese has been a staple for me...not for breakfast but for all meals haha..

Yep. It took me a while to work carbonation back in, but now I’m good to drink Diet Coke or energy drinks in moderation. I stick to hard alcohol simply because beer just takes up too much room.

Although I recently discovered this shit and my life is ruined as I’ll be taking a road trip to stock up;

Something else I've done in the past which was VERY effective, was a thick meal replacement shake or protein shake in the morning, a solid hot meal for lunch, a light small snack in the afternoon, then another thick meal replacement or protein shake for dinner. What i found was that by dulling down the flavors of half of my meals, all the flavors on the real meals came back 10 fold. It took about two weeks to really notice a change.

You've already accomplished the size of the meal issue just by getting the procedure done, so now it's just about fine tuning those meals to make them more enjoyable.

Mind of matter in a literal sense.

My son-in-law is a PA (Physician's Assistant). He had a 6-hour course on nutrition. That's it. Probably a whole semester on pharmacology.

@Dirtbag are you not allowed to eat veggies? If not, I hope you are taking some multi-vitamins. And X2 on the Metamucil.

Thought I would give you all a 5 month update....

Had my doctors visit and am down to 345. Thats 95 pounds in 5 months. The weight loss has definitely slowed. I am eating a lot more calories and still havent worked out a single day. But the calories I am eating are all pretty good. Still water only havent touched anything resembling a soda. I have eaten out less than 5 times and its never been fast food.

Thanksgiving was terrible. I was so looking forward to it. For the first time ever we gave my mom the day off and made reservations at the Refuge. Not a bad spread. Pretty overpriced for what it was to be honest. My mom is definitely better. I had to plan my meal out and pick exactly what i wanted to eat. It was impossible and I was sick to my stomach in 10 minutes. I ordered a glass of wine and could only drink half at max. Again I love food so I wanted to taste everything but it was just tooo much. But the time with family made it all good! I was able to knock out a couple screwdrivers playing cards with the fam that night tho!

The amount of money I have saved from not eating out. The sleep I have recovered. The no more snoring. The not having to wake up 3 times a night to piss. Being able to walk wherever I want without having to stop every 5o yrds to catch my breath. Nope I dont get an ice cold beer anymore. But its allllll so worth it. So glad I made the choice. But i definitely miss the food.

Good for you and thanks for checking in..... I also have been dropping weight these last 4 months.... I came to Mexico at 285 and I am currently 238. So call it 50 lbs. Im 6'5" and my pre covid weight while working out was around 230. So my situations is not as drastic as yours however I wanted to chime in just to say I am walking my beach maybe 4 times/ wk and other than that my habits haven't altered. Its gotta be these maybe 3 mile walks. The beneifts we will get from weight reduction are already apparent for me. My spine seems to be happy too. Onward brutha!

Do tell ya tease ya... or was it posted earlier in thread?
Dr said lose 40 to get surgery for an adrenal gland issue. He tried talking me into Ozempic or One Meal a Day. I just did like when I lost my life savings and have been spending more than I’m putting in. Meaning just running a calorie deficit.

Dr said lose 40 to get surgery for an adrenal gland issue. He tried talking me into Ozempic or One Meal a Day. I just did like when I lost my life savings and have been spending more than I’m putting in. Meaning just running a calorie deficit.
Ah yes the ole I gotta burn more calories than I take in theory... amazing how that works eh? I also benefitted from portion reduction. That was a huge differentiator for me in weight loss.

How is drinking for you? Wine only?

It has now been over 18 months since I had the procedure. I’m 5’10 1/2” (was 6’ but shrunk a bit over the years) and will be 64 in February. I was just shy of 300lbs and I dropped to 203. I have now been stable at 215 for 6 plus months. Still walking 2 miles a day. My life has completely transformed. I can do pretty much anything I was doing 40 years ago. Went from a 48 pant size to 36s that are now fitting a bit too loose. Triple X shirts to a basic large. Wearing 501s for the first time in several decades. Drink night (Grey Goose on the rocks) is Friday, plus at will when on vacation. I eat what ever I want, when I want. Usually healthy and in smaller servings. Having this done was absolutely the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. The picture was at the office 3 days ago when a visitor dropped by.

Congrats to all of you guy's, my Wife had the surgery and it has changed her life. When we met she was perfect weight and size, she had made huge changes in her life, sold her catering business started dieting and going to the gym most every day.
Fast forward 15 years and she just stopped caring, I was out of state working 6-8 months a year and when I was home I couldn't hide my disgust, it was very toxic and wasn't helping her in the least.
5 years ago she fell and broke both wrists, I had people coming in and taking care of everything for her and she really got big. One night when I had a bunch of people out back at the fire she fell and it took 3 of us to get her to bed.
Something clicked that night, she couldn't get down the stairs to join us at the fire and she was horrified that my friends saw her that way.

i think its doable without the surgery....but would require much more time....i have basically been on a liquid diet for two weeks already....i just dont know how long that is sustainable for....at a certain point you need the nutrients food give you
I’ve been on a liquid diet for 7 years now, on a rare occasion I will attempt eating solid. All this was caused by some serious gum surgery. I still maintain around 170 lbs and don’t feel weak.😎

261 down to 229 in 5 months. All I did was start walking for an hour a day, and being acutely aware of excess carbs in my diet. I just wish Costco and Sam's Club would start selling my cargo shorts again (or as mama calls them....purse shorts), so I can get ones that fit me!

Whoa look at you man.... great stuff right there. I curse my family genetics cause we each have a propensity to gain weight easily in my family.... just takes a bit more effort but mine drops with portion control and exercise for sure.

Tough story. Sounds like she turned herself around nicely. Sometimes we just need to reach rock bottom.

Yea, really didn't think it would happen, had an exit plan and was already living most of my life outside the home.

Good for you both.... I regretfully didn't master the "dig in and save the relationship" concept regarding women [yet] But Im a young 64 and still trying to expand my emotional side. Relationships can be just brutal.

One of my employee is having this done Monday and I’m exited for him.

He said he can’t wait to travel for work and sit in a plane seat.

I know 2 people besides my Wife and I've only seen the positive.
