I am sure for your buddy, it is probably worth the trouble just so he can say he had it. For me........there are better beers that I would want to trade for if I am dipping into my collection. Sip Of Sunshine is an east coast IPA that is better than Heddy Topper.

I was just talking about sip of sunshine to a friend. [emoji106]

Sip of sunshine is #21 on beer advocate. Heady topper is #5. Pliny the elder is #11 and Pliny the younger is #4. Crazy.

Maybe my pallet had changed but PTE and PTY are just not the same anymore and I had Heddy on one day and Sip of Sunshine the day after and I thought Sip of Sunshine was better.....

You're absolutely correct about PTE. Very let down this year. El Segundo Mayberry blew it away. I typically don't care for east coast Ipa's. But if I find it I'll give it a shot.

I think you're right and I'm a big Pliny fan. My wife and I just had a few the other night and both of us were disappointed. Locally, the earliest bottles I get are still three weeks old.

I actually prefer Blind Pig nowadays but the key to all of them is freshness. It's a night and day difference between a bottle that's a week old and one that's two or three weeks old.

Bars are holding on to their kegs for waaaay too long before they tap them. Sorel had a keg of PTY last year that they held onto it for 3 fucking weeks before tapping [emoji107]

I had PTY on the first night of the release at the Russian River brewery and it was delicious. I had the Sorel crap and it wasn't good at all.

I don't think Pliny will be bottled much longer. I think they're going to try and keg it as much as possible and you'll only be able to get bottles at the brewery or very limited release locally like Blind Pig.

I'm going to the brewery this year for the Younger release so hopefully I can grab some brew that is fresher.

I have always said that I would take a Blind Pig over PTE any day. Part of the issue with the lack in quality has to do with distribution and whether it is kept at a constant temp or let to warm and then cooled. Maybe??? I also think that hop shortages and maybe something to do with this year's harvest might contribute to the change in quality. Whatever it is.......the beer has not been right.

If Russian River knew that Sorel kept their keg for 3 weeks before tapping, they would not be getting one this year.......that's for sure. We are about 6 weeks away from this year's release.......and despite the change I have noticed in PTY, I will still go and get my 2 ten Oz tasters this year in Corona Del Mar.

I've had both heady topper and sip of sunshine. They are both good, I actually think I like heady better. I'm in AZ and just got my hands on some Pliney and didn't think it was anything special. One of my favorites right now is Dan K IPA. That shit is money!!

I told one of the people at Sorel the same thing and he got all pissed off at me like I was threatening him lol

When I met Vinny I asked him about freshness and he wants it in your hands immediately, earlier the better. With distribution that's just not really possible. I got the feeling he was a bit burnt out on the growth thing. Could care less how hard it was to get. At the bar we were at when we met him he said he switches the kegs out once a week whether they're empty or not because of it.

I'm still going to wait in line for my Younger. It's kind of the experience of it all. Ridiculous but really fun and interesting people you meet in line.

Alpine has gone the way of distribution too. It's not nearly as good as it was before the Green Flash purchase.

Fuck Sorel........their food sucks anyway......went there once with the wife.....never been back. I hope they get axed from PTY this year!!

Public House always has Blind Pig on tap......BTW.

Yeah, I am sure he is burnt out with the growth, but his pocket book is sure liking it. Bottom line is that without distribution and mass production, there is not a lot of money in beer......super thin margins and it is getting worse with the price of hops going up.

A little early but what the hell...

I like what is happening in the industry with a ton more collaborations. This is perfect for an early morning.

Just got back from a good weekend. Coronado brewing, Modern Times, Ballast Point, and then Stone.

If you can go, get to Ballast Point in Mira Mar.
Great place. Good food and the biggest beer list.

Just tried this , not bad ...grapefruit IMO is better ... View attachment 464720

I really liked this one. I agree grapefruit is better though.

I also picked up a 6er of the Watermelon Dorado Double IPA. It was a little too Watermelony for me but fairly light and smooth for an IPA. It was so light that two in I had a buzz and realized they were 10% :eek I'm going back to Total Wine this weekend to check for the Mango Even Keel IPA.

How long did you wait in line?:yikes

It was a blessing that it was pouring rain. Only took 6 hours [emoji2].

Best day to go would be Super Bowl Sunday. Probably shorter lines.

I got a Pliny the Younger at Hollingshead on Monday. Waited an hour and a half. I think it's a little overrated. Lol. I won't do that again.

This would have been my 6th straight year getting the Younger, but I missed it because of travels. I really didn't mind though because I have been saying for the past 2 years that it has been going downhill. I have had some others over the past 6 months that I think are as good or better.

Culture Brewing Company in Solana Beach. Most all of their beer is gluten reduced - brewed normally, gluten removed later.

This shit is the bomb, I haven't had good beer in a LONG time. I just wish they sold it somewhere besides their brewery...

I lived right around the corner from Hollingshead for a few years. I knew they did this but I never wanted to wait in line. I had a beer snob friend in town and said hey you have to see this awesome bar/deli we can walk to. I forgot but it happened to be the Pliny the Younger day. We showed up about 730pm and before 8 I was sitting at a table with a glass of the elder and younger. I couldn't tell a huge difference with them right next to each other. My buddy is from the East Coast and he was stoked but I wouldn't wait again either.

They are checking for me. Also looking for some Mango Even Keel.

The Mango Even Keel is pretty good. The only problem is that it's 3.8%. So it's very light even for a session IPA. It doesn't taste much like an IPA. I would say it's great for a craft beer snob in the river heat who refuses to drink Coors Light or Bud Light.

Totally!! Session IPA'S are perfect for the river!! 21st Amendment makes an awesome session IPA in a can so I usually grab some of those because I don't bring or allow bottles on the boat.

I had one of those the other night at a charity thing we went to. I forget the name, it was a 4% IPA. Not a bad beer but disappointing for a hop head.
