x2. I agree. It depends on the profession however. I don't expect everyone to know how to spell or use correct grammar.

This is where I disagree. What grade are people usually in when they take grammar...2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. My point is you are young when you learn grammar, so it should be instilled into you at a young age how to spell and punctuate correctly and carried on into life. I know the educational system in the US is rapidly deteriorating and teachers can't hurt young Johnny's delicate sensibilities by correcting him in front of class, or God forbid give them a failing grade. I think a lot of this falls back on teachers not be able to teach effectively and the whole everyone gets a trophy and no sense of accountability for anything anymore.

On an off topic point, if you were to see an 8th grade final exam from the late 1800's, or early 1900's, I doubt anyone on here would pass it. It's an unfortunate sign of the times and a big part of why the US is falling behind the rest of the world in more areas than I care to count.

Froggy:deadhorse: Proper grammar and spelling would be important if this was a "How to write a term paper forum". It's a boating forum, as long as you can understand the message the presentation doesn't matter, or shouldn't. If you want to teach, do so in private. When you correct people's grammar and spelling on a public forum you are just calling them out and acting like a douche.

I get it. RD has asked me to stop, so I will, with one exception.

If I am in the process of debating someone, I will absolutely flame the shit out of them for grammar and vocabulary issues. I will also point out said issues if someone is "telling everyone how it is" but coming off like a fifth grader. You don't get to spit vitriol and not have your fundamentals tight. If you do... you are gonna get chastised for it.

The reason I retain this option is because it is powerful. Because when you have a flame war, the object is to make the other person look stupid. This is most easily accomplished when they do it to themselves.

My .02 has expanded to $1.58, so we can put this to bed.

Sssshhhhh...RD's head will explode trying to orientate his way around that thought...

yes..

Ok, so I went over to the Fifth Grade English and spelling website to learn proper spelling and pronunciation...

and those fuckers were discussing boats

Great another website I have to compete with.. LOL

BNAG!!!!

Wes does a lot of writing to make his living, so he is obsessed with this shit.

Me?

What pisses me off is when someone brings their car in for lets say a complete engine rebuild, WITH AN EMPTY TANK OF GAS!!! I wanna fucking shoot these people sometimes. But, I usually just put gas in out of my pocket and don't say a word about it. Somethings are just better left unsaid...

;)

I would simply add the fuel to the invoice.

I will say that we haven't had a serious flaming in a long time, and the peace has been kept relatively on the board.. That being said if it's game on with someone, well then fuck yes.. LOL Although I have to admit I always thought the grammar Nazi shit in the middle of a good chastising was weak. It's better to poke holes and funnies..

I would go for the tits. Why? Because grammar could be taught in an afternoon to an adult.

And tits could be bought without even measurably affecting a lot of the guys bank accounts on here that can't construct a sentence.

So flaming and debating is the same?
Noted.

$1.58??

Better have Shintooo check your math.

Wow did this thing grow some legs. I'm not a grammar Nazi, but I know when I read and you're is swapped with your, or then and than, I find myself rereading the sentence because it doesn't make sense, or the flow is off and it is visually wrong. I will fuck around and correct someone...usually only someone I know offline just to screw with them. I know that people write posts and rarely proof read them so I take it for what it is...people being in a hurry and maybe hitting the wrong key. I can understand both sides of the argument and while I choose not to point it out, I know that every time I see a misspelling or the wrong use of the aforementioned words I notice it...punctuation not as much.

I know in business, when I see them in an e mail, on a proposal, on a PO or any other kind of correspondence it really bothers me... just my .02

Carry on

I concur with Mr. Lynch.

Maybe I should introduce you to my nephew, he can teach you a thing or two about debating. He's a nationally ranked debater at UNLV, team is ranked in the top ten nationally and he is as well, if you think what you have attempted here is a debate your sadly mistaken. Knocking people isn't debating.

I think the post earlier about having to prove something all the time to anyone who questions the Dali plays into it.

I think it's funny/ sad how riled up he gets over this stuff.

As far as the youth, IMO it is texting and forums that has created the "textspeak" and eliminated proper grammar.
So what if some of us old fucks don't have a mastery of grammar?
If I am sending a proposal to a potential client, I have 2 girls and a guy at least that are paid to do that.
I talk, they type and correct.
Think I'll go back to the bar and have the bartender girl type for me.

Wes, don't go ape shit on me if I accidentally use the world aluminium,OK.:D

The spelling in ?um continued in occasional use in Britain for a while, though that in ?ium soon predominated. In the USA, the position was more complicated. Noah Webster?s Dictionary of 1828 has only aluminum, though [the standard spelling among US chemists throughout most of the nineteenth century was aluminium;

Emperor Napoleon III had some aluminium cutlery made for state banquets, but it still cost much more than gold. When the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus in London was cast from aluminium in 1893 it was still an exotic and expensive choice.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) officially standardised on aluminium in 1990, though this has done nothing, of course, to change the way people in the US spell it for day to day purposes.

So you're saying since it's a boating forum that there is no difference between the two following sentences?

Feeling your nuts.
Feeling you're nuts.

What baffles me is how's many people will defend their inability to use proper grammar and spelling. Because "it's a boating forum "

"Brawndo is good for the plants because it has electrolytes in it"~ idiocracy. Me thinks quote a few people should watch that movie. ;)

Why not just change how the teacher is delivering the message?

It's the difference between rape and seduction... Salesmanship.

Tweek the delivery of the message and maybe the habit will change too.

This is like every other thread where Wes disagrees with someone. He beats a dead horse until the other person gives up because they are sick of his shit.

Just like when I started a thread about open bows and he went on and on about how evil they are.

I've never met you Wes, you seem like a very smart and confident guy. Sometimes you just seem so opinionated that you can come off as an ahole. I'm sure you arn't, lots of your other posts prove it.

Opinionated... check. Asshole... check. Not overly proud of either, but that's who I am.

I personally think more people could dig in their heels about more things more often. I think it would make the world a better place.

One thing you will find about my opinion though, is it can be swayed with logic and experience. I am very willing to admit when I find that I am wrong. VERY willing. It is the rare person that is able to drag me off of a committed path though without convincing me otherwise.

I am very aware that this thread has backfired. Actually, my stance on the subject has backfired. I look like a bigger asshole than I am, and in the higher altitude view of it I am still 100% correct. Down here on the ground though, the tactics aren't working and I'm getting creamed.

Back to the best thing I learned in training. If you are the only one right... you're wrong. I know I'm not the only person who feels the way I do about grammar, and I know I'm not the only one judging people on it. What I do know is that I'm the only idiot to take a stand on it... and arguing with someone that has piss poor grammar about its merits is like mud wrestling with a pig. You end up filthy and the pig loves it.

When I see people use poor grammar I notice it, but who the fuck am I to tell them they are wrong? Who gives a shit?

Usually on forums, I write the way I would talk. It usually leads to a bunch of run on sentences, but it reads easy.

The only spelling and grammar mistakes that bother me are those which I make. In fact, I just cut a PM to Wes that had a few editing mistakes I wish had not made the final draft of that document. :D

Ultimately, I think it's great that Wes spends time on the forum. Individuals can choose to respond to Wes' comments as they wish and that's great too.

Perhaps the goal of this forum should not be to have a single, shared mind but, rather, to foster a rich tapestry of varied views and opinions for all to mock, criticize, and flame away the work day.

Someones spelling mistakes don't really bother me that much. What I can't stand is when people write like they text where they only write/type a few letters to get the point across.

Don't sell yourself short Wes, you're every bit the asshole you come across as!!
Dig your heels in man!!:rolleyes:D

I still wonder though, how can a person viciously oppose open bow boats, yet post at length on a convertible classic car?
You surely know what car enthusiasts think about convertibles, right?

How say you, Swami?

(Please respond thoughtfully, if at all, I have money riding on this!)

From a "feeling" perspective, I live in San Diego which has traditionally great weather. I enjoy cruising with the top down.

From a pure utility perspective, the visibility is far improved in a convertible, so parking, driving and throwing stuff in the back seat is much easier. Surfboard fits in the car too, which it wouldn't if it was a coupe.

Aesthetically, unlike a boat, the lines of a convertible with the top down are much nicer than the sedan in many cases. The car is sleeker, less bulky and more streamlined. On a classic muscle car, this is a debatable opinion, but nobody has ever argued that the open bow variant looked nicer than the closed bow on a boat. Plus, as they are more rare and desirable, it makes it even that much nicer to have a cool one.

Plus, I find all that glass and metal over my head a safety hazard. I want to get flung from the car in the event of an accident. ;)
