It’s one of the things that frustrates me about the union. Often times there’s awesome people sitting in the hall but because the union doesn’t have work the expectation is you sit home until there is.

Most don’t sit and do work elsewhere but it’s the expectation the union has on you guys that is frustrating.

Somebody else told my union rep for me im not going to get into all the details here but side work and jobs that take work from union brothers are two different things. When I did that church someone called on me and I was pulled into the office. I’m also a delegate for my local now so it’s a little different for me. Building BBQ pits and sheds in backyards isn’t going to raise any flags. Like I said early he has too much attention on him now and trying to go head to head with the union isn’t the greatest idea but I’ll watch it.

You realize that just because a guy got his union journeyman card doesn’t mean he knows more than the non union guy that learned in the field and not in a classroom? I can guarantee to you not all journeyman are equally skilled, yet they get paid the same. Same goes for non union guys.

You aren’t always training the competition. There are guys out there that don’t need a journeyman card to prove they are smarter than a union guy. No different than a teacher with a credential. Just because they can teach, doesn’t mean they are a good teacher.

It goes both ways though. There are really smart union guys too. Ironically, a lot of them figure out they are worth more than the union scale
They are maxed out at and end up starting their own business or are able to set their hourly rate based on the skill they provide. Outside the hall.

As far as hurting the unions bargaining power. That’s an entirely different thread.

I just got done with work for the day. Still trying to figure out how to work less and make more. But so far the work harder make more seems to work for Me. I am just a scab Construction worker trying to live my best life. Probably should of got a real job. To late for that.

What’s your highest paid journeyman? Total package… hourly wage plus benefits. Vacation, retirement, medical, dental. Just curious as that adds real facts to the conversation.

I think people lose sight of privately funded unions vs publicly funded unions. My plan was to be done at 49, but it appears that it will be 55 now. After that I plan on getting some other type of job to keep insurance coming in and a little extra money.
