I am thinking about getting a super clean well cared for ford excursion to transport the wife 3 kids and 2 dogs to the river house. its a 2002 7.3L powerstroke with 97k. reliable or not? should i do it?

Most reliable vehicle u will ever buy plus the safest at 9600lbs your family will arrive alive.

Without a doubt, buy it. If it's not already done, put a tuner on it. That will really wake up that 7.3. Gauges, Intake, Exhaust, ebpv delete, wicked wheel 2 or similar, boost fooler and do a 31 row 6.0 trans cooler upgrade if you plan to tow.

Get acquainted with riff raff diesel.

That beast will give you many years of reliable enjoyment! Keep us posted!

All of the above. But the best tuner for this motor is a DP Tuner

[emoji202]

My brother in law his name was Derek Rocha it was a logo he designed that says DRoch. He was killed in a drunk driving accident.

No worries brother. I have had some people make some comments that were uncalled for. Don't feel like a heel no harm done[emoji482]

All of the above. But the best tuner for this motor is a DP Tuner

DP has a track record of wiping out 7.3s. Being throwing rods or the timing taking out cylinders. My SCT tune from DP was crap. Engine sounded terrible and whiplast shifting. Went back and forth with adjustments and nothing worked.

Got the F5 with 80hp economy and towing and I love it. Never heard a bad thing about them till now. What are you running now?

Gearhead tunes on a ts style chip. To be fair Gearhead wouldnt send me a 7.3 tune for the sct. There are more tuning parameters on the chip than the sct. Meaning chips provide better tuning than the sct. DP should have known that and should have told me about that when going back and forth with tune adjustments. I told them the tune just isn't working and I'm still out $80.

I can't remember who wrote my tunes....i could find out but I only have experience with the ts 6 position dealio with custom tunes put on it. I have the f350 crew cab long bed dually and 3 of my friends have excursions with the same set up.

On my truck i pretty much only use the high idle and the 80 horse custom tow tune and i am very happy with it, but my friends utilize them all on their rides (daily driver, tow tunes, hot street, race, roll coal, etc).

My truck is what it is, a towing and hauling tool. 3 of the custom tunes are worthless to me, one which blows black smoke at any touching of the throttle pedal, a street race tune and one that the rear duals break loose every time. One of these days i will have them taken out for a some other tow tune options.

I never got around to posting pictures. I ended up with a 2000 4x4 7.3L. It had about 112k (about to roll 115k).

Since Ive purchased I have performed the following

services
1)oil and filter
2)trans fluid and filter
3)Front, rear differential, and transfer case fluid

Repairs
1)cruise control sensor on master cylinder failed. Replaced with new sensor.
2)#8 injector-replaced

upgrades
1)oneupoffroad front and rear aluminum differnetial covers
2)precision metal fabrication excursion stainless steel braded brake line kit
3)late model head lights, and blinkers lenses
4)SSBC front and rear Slotted rotors and quick stop pads

I am adding BDS 4" front and rear leafs, w/ dual fox shocks front, single rear, and dual fox steering stabilizers in the next couple weeks.

Needless to say I really love this thing. I havent enjoyed my daily vehicle this much since I lifted my old silverado in high school

Nice rig but I would think twice about what lift you do. I did lots of research on the lift cause I knew I was keeping mine. And I did a Carey Towery performance lift. It rides like a Cadillac.

Can you post a pic of your diff covers

DP has a track record of wiping out 7.3s. Being throwing rods or the timing taking out cylinders. My SCT tune from DP was crap. Engine sounded terrible and whiplast shifting. Went back and forth with adjustments and nothing worked.

I had a 02 F350 with DP tunes. I'll say the tunes were OK. It drove great around town, but hook a trailer to it and it was a dog. The tow setting was awful, shift points were all over the place and were so harsh I thought it was going to break the trans, it wouldn't lock up the converter and wouldn't shift into OD unless you were going pretty fast on the highway. They were custom tunes from the previous owner and I could've had the tunes redone to my liking but I never did.

After you tow with a Banks truck, you'll never look back. A tuner alone can produce the big numbers, but those mean nothing when towing. I've got an 02 with the full Banks Power Pack and I recently just got back from towing from FL to CA to FL towing 12-13k pounds each way. This was a 32' enclosed trailer so not aerodynamic at all, still got 10mpg the whole way at 70mph. Never came close to pushing EGT limits. Towing my 27 Advantage (~7k lbs) its gets 14-15 mpg at 70mph and I've towed it 90mph up the needles grades on 40 in 115* heat, doesn't even think twice.

Put the Power Pack on that excursion and you won't even recognize the truck. That would be the ultimate family hauler!

Test drove a 7.3 today, I really liked it. Took it to my mechanic and it needs a transmission, brakes and some minor stuff. Seller wouldn't budge on the price, so I'll start looking again.

At least I know it will fit in the garage.

That's a lot of coin. But it's crazy the sticker on mine was 46k back in 2001. Those limiters weren't cheap by any means

I am guessing these are going around 20k. I certainly would not pay 23k for something that needed a transmission from the start. I am trying to decide between an Excursion and a late model Chevy Duramax.

I am not in a hurry, so today wasn't a great loss, at least now I know it fits in the garage at stock height. It did have a GT tuner/ Bully Dog on it.

130k miles. It is really clean, that's why I went to look at it.

It threw a P1744 code for my mechanic. I wanted the seller to take the $3800 hundred right off the top of his price because of the transmission...he offered to have it serviced, which doesn't do anything for me.

It was the first time I have driven one, I enjoyed it. I am in no hurry and am trying to make up my mind between an Excursion or a late model Chevy with a Duramax. Would love a Suburban with a diesel but that's not possible without some serious coin.

If you specifically want a 7.3 excursion and this one could of been "the one" then a tranny problem wouldn't of deterred me one bit. I would of been on the phone with ATS Diesel Performance while i was on the way to do the title work lol

The point is, these are getting hard to find and they ain't making any more.

X2. If the truck was really clean and had everything you wanted Id consider it. Id also be on the line with http://jwtt.com/home getting ready for a new tranny.

If you don't mind driving an "older" vehicle then one of these (7.3) could very well be the last people hauler you ever buy.

I drove a friends new 6.7 dually the other day and it was very impressive and had so many bells and whistles in it. I got in my 01 later and realized i was just as happy.

My DP tune was similar. Right now I'm running Gearhead tunes on a chip and a John Wood transmission. The tunes are specific to my truck because of the transmission and even to tire size. GH and JW have worked together to make sure the tuning and trans work together as best as it can for the customer. The tow tune is great. Quick firm shifts without any harshness and a nice low end torque curve that is safe for my non forged rod engine. Egt's stayed below 1000 with a 36' 5th wheel. Coolant temp never went over 220* on hills and usually stayed around 195*. Not many see this because they don't have a true coolant gauge but bad tuning will over heat an engine. I had another tuner before DP and ECT got to 250* in no time on a hill with the 5th wheel.

Yep, his transmissions are the best. A little FYI. When you call you may get John, you may get James, or the answering machine. They are a little hard to get a hold of. Leave a message and they'll call you back. John still does the machining and James takes care of the labor.

I have a 7.3 crew and a 6.0 crew. The 6.0 with 5 speed tows so much nicer. The 7.3 has 215k on the clock and I've had it for 10yrs. Not sure it's going anywhere soon
