The 2022 annual transparency report by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) reveals the FBI has been surveilling millions of American citizens — without warrants or proper cause

Between December 2020 and November 2021, the FBI scoured private emails, texts and other electronic communications of 3.4 million U.S. residents, without obtaining a single warrant. Between December 2019 and November 2020, just under 1.3 million Americans were surveilled in this manner

There’s also been a sharp uptick in the number of times government officials asked for the identity of individuals surveilled to be revealed, a practice known as “unmasking”

so pick a person, investigate all communications, bank records, everything..........find a crime?👀yowza

russia:
“Show me the man and I’ll show you the crime” was Beria’s infamous boast. He served as deputy premier from 1941 until Stalin’s death in 1953, supervising the expansion of the gulags and other secret detention facilities for political prisoners. He became part of a post-Stalin, short-lived ruling troika until he was executed for treason after Nikita Khrushchev’s coup d’etat in 1953.

Isn’t that the strategy on Hunter’s laptop?

In general, I believe secrecy has it's proven merits.
I believe in the old adage that loose lips sinks ships.
I believe in a pro-active national security, not reactive.
I believe the current trend of information leaks being all the rage, hold potential danger for this country and our military.
I think the people responsible to be held for treason and made an example of.
I don't believe those who mean us harm should have a clue what measures we're employing to protect ourselves.
I believe in profiling, I do it my own life daily, right or wrong.
I believe there's those that need scrutiny when suspected, not after they've proven they do.

I suppose working for and within the various installations that were charged with being the security "Listeners" for this country have given me a different perspective.

what would stop them from, say, spying on a presidential candidate, just to find dirt?

I think these presidential candidates should face far more scrutiny than they have as well as their flapply lipped staff members.

If a presidential candidate has "Dirt" then the voters should be made aware. I'm a believer that the President should be held to higher standards both before and during his tenure.
If "They" whomever that is you're imaging, are eves dropping for subversive political purposes, that's wrong in and of itself and should be dealt with accordingly.
Besides, if finding dirt is their motive, there's far more secretive and effective methods for accomplishing that then using a federal service with all it's eyes and ears.
There's certainly private firms with the same and in many cases, more advanced capabilities than our civil servants.
I trust you don't believe those employees and agents representing these organizations are all of like mind.
Because they are not, they're all pushing and shoving to grasp the next higher rung.

I can understand this. I think some feel the surveillance state is a recent concept. For years we've been told that other countries do it. Why would this one be different? The only thing that has changed is now the forms of communication, and the abilities of both the speakers and those listening have advanced.

If you are making plans to commit violence or mischief, do so in person, with those you know and trust. The fishing expedition isn't new, but it has become much easier.

Well, if they think J6 was an insurrection, maybe they do feel this is a coup d'etat?

Makes one wonder about their definition of revolution or civil war...

Well, I think 'Politicians' should be substituted for Leftist, but sure, without a doubt.
Most, if not all, politicians lie.

Leftists, every single one of them (elected or not) lie and cheat. All. The. Time.
