We have Edison , but same shit. Got my generator ready in Arrowhead Highlands.
50 60 mph winds all night. They have been working on poles and wire and trimming trees for months in our neighborhood, so we'll see.

Easier to blame the utility without knowing what the utilities do or how they are constrained.
I think he may have been more on the side of needed upgrades than complaining about the actual situations as they arise.

I meant to ask last night, is there a rough number of how many miles of transmission line is strung in California? The number has to be massive.

Hello Mr George
I'm not going to make it to work today. It's my truck it don't want to run today.

If they are being constrained then start pointing fingers at who's doing that

Think about the volume transmission lines thats currently feeding the grid thru out the US…

If the projections are accurate, that has to be doubled in 10-15 years to meet the needs… Yes most large Investor Owned Utilities are expecting their load to double in 10-15 years to meet the forecasted needs.

Honestly I think the projections are wrong. Even if I am wrong about that, it takes way to much time to get thru all the lawsuits, then the permits, then lead times on raw materials and finally build the new infrastructure to begin with, even if you could build the generation plants, I dont think you could build the transmission lines to accomodate that extra generation in the time frame the projections call for.

Or the other solution is boat load of battery’s, which the rate payers cannot afford.

One way or the other… its gonna be shit show, demand cannot increase, without more capacity… that takes alot of $$$$ and time.

Regardless the ####s are not adding up to me. But I am not a politician or a policy maker.

I have a 10KW generator ($1K on Amazon for an open frame) that I just back feed a 50A 2P breaker on my panel and turn off the main. Just check the main every so often with a hot stick to see if power is back on, if so, disconnect the generator and flip back on the main. It will run everything I need except the AC units which don't matter right now.

Makes for a little inconvenience but it's better than the alternative.

Environmental, DWR, CalTrans, Municipalities, US Forest, Tribal council, it goes on and on.

Everyone wants something done and wants to know why it’s not done. The above jack wagons hold shit up for years.

Do you know how much a CalTrans permit costs me to replace a pole like for like? 6months to a year wait and price starts at 45k

We are going on 2 years for a DWR pothole permit.

Environmental is blocking a job that I’m scared to even talk about that needs to be built yesterday and we can’t get the clearance to do so.

Cities ask for upgrades and when we do so they say they don’t like it so do it another way or no permit. No biggie we can just ignore standards I guess.

Tribal is trying to block a huge job because they might have lived on that land years ago and don’t want us to damage artifacts.

You don’t get to point fingers at these groups. These are the rules and you play the game or else.

Allot of us bust our butts to get things upgraded but get roadblocks at every corner.

Oh don’t forget the homeowner suing us for 100k because we trimmed his pain tree and claims we lower the wires every year so we can cut his tree shorter and shorter.

Or the guy that sued us for his cows getting out of his fence because we were there the week before and supposedly left the gate open.

The BS we deal with is insane. And all it does is run up the cost and inconvenience to the rate payer.

Call a press conference and rat them out, let Edison's customers know why their electricity is always getting turned off and who is actually responsible for it. Until this happens then you guys are to blame and you guys will continue to get shit for it.

I'm over by Blue Jay. Edison has run that coated wire all over the place in my area. About the last three PSPS events up there haven't resulted in a power shut off for me and I have to figure it's all the Edison work recently.

I still have a portable genset and just recently added a whole home genset so I'm covered either way but so far its way better than it used to be. At least in my area. Hopefully yours is the same.

Why the hot stick ? I just look at my meter, it will show if the line side power is back on, regardless of the status of the main breaker.
No issues with your computer or sensitive electronics running off an non-invertor gennie ?
I've heard both ways, often it depends on how heavy it's loaded and the types of load.

Don't give a fuck, that's the cost of the business they are in, maintain the equipment or deal with the lawsuits and blame game. Same winds in the 80's and 90's but no fires caused by the utilities.
Bullsh*t, We had all kinds of fires, I worked through most of them, we called them acts of nature and your homeowners ins covered them, Prove me wrong.

When they started suing utilities things changed, I will give credit to the guy today about the Malibu fire saying they do not have a cause, NOP is blame the utility these days.

Covered wire helps, but is not a fool proof solution, and that was a multi year project, I I know the area, you were probably off plenty of times while a lot of that work went on.

Glad to hear it helped,

You have a very skewed view of how things work.
How do call out threads work here? You really suggest calling a press conference to call out stakeholders that don’t give a shit and are untouchable?

What’s next the train station?

So 90% of those fires were started by utilities🙄? No, a good chunk were started by arsonists and they still are, well arson or homeless but ins companies can't collect from a homeless person or an arsonist that hasn't/can't get caught so now we just blame the utilities.

I said we have always had fires, not 90% are started by utilities. But you are correct, utilities have deep pockets, ins. co's have learned that so if a power line happens to run there it's hard to prove otherwise.

Good thing SDGE cut the power off.
If only they could close the border.
Spontaneous combustion strikes again & again & ------- At least they caught and incarcerated that "Transient" arsonist the other day.

Kudos to Cal Fire over the past 24 hours, you guys flat kicked ass on that Border Fire and the one east of me at 4AM-ish, this morning.
Many thanks sir 👌👍👏

Yeah they did my area December 2020. Thankfully the weather held. In addition to the coated wire, I got a new pole for my property.

And yes, they did outages for all the other local areas before and after mine, so for a time it was pretty crazy but I didn't mind it if it was making things better. And so far it has been.

Another controversy was aggressive tree trimming, I know that was a huge fight, but really does help.

Covered conductor is worthless if a huge tree rips through it.

I guess I didn't explain it enough in my original post but that is what I meant, back then very few fires were started from utilities and now damn near every fire is and I call BS. These utility companies need to stop bending over and letting the blame be on them, start calling out the politicians that want to protect the homeless and their agenda

Clearly I took it the other way.

Utilities are generally considered the bad guy so it's a short jump to blame them, Edison is spending a small fortune to have their logo on the side of the huge water drop chopper. I have no idea what that cost them but you can imagine why.

Power still off?
This is the situation as of a few minutes ago, with 46,661 still off and with little to no wind and I'm guessing really chaffs folks asses.
A little over an hour ago that count was closer to 56,000, so it does appear some areas are starting to come back online.

So the way the PSPS works is once they de-energize the line every inch needs to be patrolled before they re-energize, its a continuity thing. so the event can be over but they may not have done a patrol.
Trust me the field guys don't like it and didn't vote for it. many of them live in these areas just like you guys.

Let’s just hope when the workers are out there getting your lines and poles back up.
People aren’t taking pot shots at them and swerving to hit them with cars.
Like the last Malibu fire. 😡

Idk who did that (some people are just miserable) but I saw them get multiple standing ovations at restaurants after Woosley.

There’s angry people everywhere. And blame anyone and everyone for what happens.
I’d just like to think if I lost my home to fire.
I wouldn’t stoop to acting the way “some” did.

And they deserved the standing ovations. They were couped up in hotels for weeks and working their asses off to get power back to all.

These are the stupid people for not having a generator to get thru a temporary inconvenience.
