All due respect Dave, but that is why my family stopped boating there on weekends 35 years ago. Now that I'm a Father, I avoid most Saturdays even in Havasu.

Shoot , that's nothing ...just drive any LA freeways or streets , and that is so common , you're surprised
when it doesn't happen . When I go up the river , I just fully expect it . Go to the river enough and you get an
idea of who and what to profile .

Too close or not too close (we both have our own opinion), but Dave what makes it such a dumbass move is watch the video again. He was way back behind the pontoon boat and could of slowed a bit and cut across back there and then went by. Not get right up on their ass and then cut across. I understand that Parker it could be normal and if this was in Parker then I guess Ok (still too close for me), but this was not Parker! That guy does that to me and my family with my 2 year old daughter he better go find a beach where I cannot find him and the same goes for the douschebag that did the same thing to Joker, but worse in the M31 on Friday!:thumbsdown

I am the driver of the Playcraft. Here is my take...

First off every guy including the one taking the video owns a performance boat. I have been boating in Havasu AND in Parker for 10+ years and this is by far the closest I have ever been passed (I would say 3-4 feet). I love fly bys since I do the same with the DCB. But not that close obviously. So when I heard 'oh shit' I turned and was a deer in headlights. I was just making sure to continue to hold my line and hope the DCB driver knows what he is doing. The first thought was don't hit us. Once he made the pass initial reaction was a sigh of relief and as you can hear laughter from most. I had mixed emotions - that was f$cking close/idiot to that was pretty f$cking cool. But I wouldn't be here posting this if the guy was 3 more feet to his right. It was too close! Period.

Agree 100%, anyone that thinks it was no big deal is a douche just like the boat driver.

Way way too close, and especially at that speed! What if, the pontoon for some reason (lost his RDP hat), suddenly backed off the throttle? Effing disaster waiting to happen, that's what!

It seems those DCB guys like to cross wake very close to the back of the leading boat. I wonder if anything bad ever comes from it? :headscratch:

Agreed. The fact that he was coming up behind and had to turn to pass you that close is something completely different than a flyby where he is never directly pointed at you and on course to pass you the whole time.

No doubt it was close for sure.. Had I been in the boat and legit worried, you would have seen a "man overboard" on the opposite side. Nobody even got up from their seats, so I was figuring nobody was that worried about it. After he passed there was laughter etc.. I dunno? Either way, I guess I just don't get upset at things like this. I would just shrug it off and move on with my life. If you want to pursue it that bad, it's about 2 phone calls to find out who he is and get his phone #, and talk to him. Make the calls. 1st call is to DCB 619-442-0300, 2nd call is to the owner.

close only counts in horseshoes and handgrenades.

if you're losing sleep over how close this is, you obviously have never driven on LA freeways.

1 more vote for Douche.... I try to operate a boat in a manner that it is consider safe "Unanimously" by all boats that I pass on the river. The fact that so many think this guy is an ass speaks for itself.

Boats sound and look just as cool accelerating, so this guy should have slowed down and waited for a clean pass... the sound of him throttling up and around in the pass would have got cheers from the pontoon and maybe a set of boobies instead of this video.....

Good point. You held your line. How'd Mr. DCB know you would do that? He fucking doesn't. If you didn't know better you might have tried to move out of the way. It appeared he was going to show everyone how bad ass he was and buzz you guys. Asshole move all the way around.
And, if this kind of boating is the norm some where, god bless.

Just my two cents, here is a copy of rules of the road. If the Dumb ass wants to drive like an idiot and put himself in danger go ahead, it's a problem when he puts others in danger. People think that when they get to Havasu that's its a free for all, anything goes. Good thing no one got hurt. image.jpg

I agree Parker is typically closer, luckily the boats are typically a little smaller & more manueverable too.

It's the overtaking person's responsibility to get by cleanly. That person needs to leave enough room to anticipate anything the toon might do. For example, if the toon had an engine problem & stopped, or if someone dropped their beer & the guy let off the throttle, etc., the overtaking boat needs to anticipate those possible conditions.

If the toon did anything other than stay the course or veer to the right, that DCB would have mowed them over, too close IMO.

If the guy has been looking over his shoulder to see who was behind him, he would not have saw you in time.

Way too fast for the crowded conditions that day. Glad you are here tell the story. *phew*

Maybe not, but...

If someone called Al Stoker and complained about one of His boats/drivers, Al would rip the driver a new fucking asshole. And yes, it has happened before. Every Stoker owner knows he represents Al, all the time.

Seriously...

I've been driving Stokers for maybe 20 years now? My best friend has one, (well, he is on his second one now) and I have as much or more seat time in it as he does. They are kick ass boats IMHO.

Close for Havasu I guess, the norm for Parker.

I was dropping RD off at Foxes in my 29, he was standing on the deck so I could nose in and let him jump. I had a guy in a Warlock set on kill pass in between us and the dock. That was scary, the DCB in that video looks to be going slow enough and under control.

It was close but not malicious looking to me.

An average weekend in Parker and its usually pass or get passed. Lol. Dave gets passed a lot. ;)

Sorry about the big layout when a small portion pertains. I'm not one who follows the rules to the letter, but I try to be as safe as possible. When a crisis exits like an accident or someone being killed, the letter stands tall. When overtaking or being overtaken rule 34 inland waters apply which is the right upper corner. If I'm wrong I stand corrected.

It doesn't matter if you are boating Parker, Havasu, Mead, Lake of the Ozarks or any other U.S. lake, if you cause an accident and you aren't following the rules it's your fault and I'm sure your insurance company and the ligation lawyers are going to luv you. Oh I wonder if they'd give you a pass when you say "But that's the way we boat on Parker"! lol :grumble:

The dude with the SLR camera keeps saying "His eye's were this big". My guess is the DCB driver was watching the other cats, looked up and "oh shit!" I would say it wasn't intentional and everyone was damn lucky it wasn't a straight up accident.

I've give credit where credit is due and by Rule 34 - Maneuvering and Warning Signals. INLAND, (C)(i), you are partially right. Yes the DCB operator by default, being the give way vessel in an overtaking scenario, was required to carry out the appropriate warning signals for the situation. However the reality is less than 10% of the boating populace knows how or when to properly execute warning signals and even those that do, don't!

Think of it like this? if you're traveling down the lake and you hear another boat blast their horn, one of two thoughts are typically going to come to mind. 1). WTF did I do? 2) WTF does that person want? I had to memorize all the rules and regulations when I was getting my USCG license and have same reactions.

Not implying that the DCB was right or wrong, but in my experience when driving at a high rate especially in close proximity of other vessels and the shoreline, you have one hand on the wheel and the other hand on the throttle(s), as the last thing in my mind is to remove either hand to from their location to properly signal my intentions.
