Typically get a little burned out by the end of each season in Boating, SXS and Golf. Drop one off and pick the other up keeps it pretty fresh. The drive sucks but I’m fortunate to get out at a decent hour Thursday and stay thru Sunday.

I may have a different spin when Just Money calls to let me know the damage $$$ from last weekend. 😬

I always read that if you loved what you do, it would not be a job; so I made off-roading a job and wrecked my hobby.

My relationship with offroading these days is hit and miss. The act of driving offroad serves only a purpose to participate in something with a group of special people, or to get me to a special location. I have almost no passion for it anymore and see the entire industry through a different, mostly unattractive lens.

The thrill is long gone. I went way beyond burnout.

Unfortunately I gave up surfing after many years.
#1 reason was the crowd ….. everyone wants to hustle you for EVERY single wave , even the shitty ones.

Final straw …. one day some dude who was a way better surfer than me seemed to be paddling for EVERY single wave I was trying to catch …. I tried my best to get away from him but it was like he was following me.
Finally I had enough, stopped and yelled at the guy , “Are you gonna surf right here”?!?! He said ‘Yeah’. I said “Cool, I’m gonna paddle 300 yards down that way so I’m not in your way anymore “ !!!! … he replied , “You’re not in my way” !!! … to which I said , “Well apparently I am since you seem to feel the need to paddle for every fucking wave I’m trying to catch”!!!!! ….. he came back with “It’s not my fault you can’t paddle”!!! …. & I said , “Nope, it’s sure not, and that’s why I’m paddling way the fuck away from you”!!!!!

The dude didn’t know what to say …. Usually dudes just bark back & forth talking shit, then keep surfing.

My buddies were dying laughing & still tell that story to this day ! 😆

I was over it.
This is why I moved to the central coast in 89' after coming up for a contest in 86' . Surfing is the only thing I'm still pretty good at for my age plus having been in the lineup for so long and knowing everyone for years nobody moves if I'm showing interest in a wave and vice versa for certain guys and now gals ...... and I'm sorta trying to quit lol, but only so I can get out from under the albatross around your neck burden of being tied to the swell angle, tide, and wind not the crowding. Plus it's time away from the wife like golf for most guys not to mention neck and back pain so I've found dirt biking and other hobbies are easier to schedule , and my chick still loves to boat and ski. I took a golf lesson, played about 20 times and can now totally do it but never really get fired up to go. Skiing wrapped up instead of hands out front has been fun and will keep that hobby going at least 10 years more than it would have for us . We sold our lake house when the kids were in sports and we'd always felt the same about is the work worth the reward, so when we got back into it 6 years later we built a setup with storage and a ramp . I think that's the key even if it's in a little trailer park or whatever to make it turn key without towing unless it's a trip to a different lake . Off road camping is work no matter what but worth it if that's what the family and or friends are into imo. I find most of my friends at home are my same ones, and most of my friends at the river are 10-12 years younger that we do active hobby stuff together with.

been an avid boater and off roader al my life.

yeah, the costs, maintenance, al the other headaches associated with it........i do much less of both each year.

that said, my go to sport is flying sailplanes. its a couple hour drive to my soaring spot, takes about 45 minutes to assemble the glider. then i go fy for upwards of 8 hours and come back. there is little to no maintenance, if the weather is good i will leave it assembled and fly the next day and so forth. its all about predicting the right weather....sometimes i can stay and fly for a week or more. when i am done, another 45 minutes to put the glider back in the trailer and i am homeward bound.

btw, its more fun than boating and offroad.

Depends. I could go fishing every day if time allowed.
I used to fish all the time. Carries a pole in the Jeep at all times.
Then just sort of stopped.
Went years without.
Threw a line in last year and now? I carry a pole in he truck😂
A small little box I can fit in the pocket of cargo shorts with a few lures, pliers and my license.

This whole no drinking thing has made the drives easier that’s for sure lol.

Getting home from Mammoth yesterday not hungover made getting up at 5:30 a breeze.
💯 before I wouldn’t be able to one day bangers. Drinking really wears you out.

Nope.

I work til noon then out into the shop for hobbies.

Always something fun to do. And if it doesn’t get done I don’t care. I think that’s the secret to not getting burnt out.

To solve the mystery of why I started this thread……….

I am starting to loose my desire to own a boat. Sure, I have the ultimate set-up by most standards, but I am beginning to look at my boat with ambivalence.

Stuff going through my head……. No particular order

If I take it out…… do I really want to clean it again for the 1000th time?

How many times can you see the same waterway before it’s boring?

I have no more restaurants to boat to, that I haven’t already been to dozens of times.

The local sandbars are the same old thing……. Just a different day

I wonder how many thousands I will spend this year on my boat, boatlift, and dock, which are all paid for with no payment whatsoever? I am guessing 10k to 15k (7k for sure, just on detailing)

Hurricane season sucks for too many reasons to list. Let’s just call it 3 months of stress and anxiety. Just don’t make any travel plans, during these months. You’re not boating to the Bahamas either.

I know that if I do become in the direct crosshairs for a named hurricane…….. I will be lucky if it only costs me 5k.

I am tired of continuously repairing my floating boat lift. Even though it sits in a no wake zone, the idiots that ignore the posted signs, such as the entire 5am fishing crowd, are beating the shit out of it.

Above were the negatives……… let me end with the positives in no particular order.

I have never been to the boat ramp with my current boat. Yes, I own a trailer. However, I took a water delivery 2 years ago, and have done all services by having boat slung out.

It takes about 10 minutes from the time I leave my condo, until my boat is floating.

After I am done boating for the day……. It only takes about 2 minutes to get home. It just depends on how long I have to wait for the elevator.

I have very few responsibilities lately, and can do whatever I want……. Whenever I want. (I know that sounds great, but it can be boring too)

Anyways…….. I posted this thread hoping to find some inspiration. But, it is actually nice to see that I am not alone with these thoughts.

I appreciate reading your input, from your own perspectives, of your present hobby mind set.

I am also hoping to get out of the mental funk I am currently in, about the above. I keep debating inside my head if “The Juice is Worth The Squeeze”

Edit:

One last thing…….. My boat is in water 24/7/365…….. It is a constant reminder that I am not FREE. I have to always make sure my boat is ok.

That is our problem. We have way too many things to maintain that it tires us out. We almost got into RC rock crawlers over the summer, but decided to put that on hold.

We will see how our current plan works out, We are going to do one thing at a time. We were going to start working on the Daytona, but with the Howard issues, we decided to get all the gel coat fixed, make sure it’s right and will do the upholstery before the Daytona gets touched. But, the banshee is next as it’s been sitting for two years now. Not sure if this will help with the burn out, but at least one thing gets fully done and we don’t have multiple projects going on. It’s never ending…

We RV with a jeep on tow which I enjoy until I want to get home and work in my garage. This can take from a week to 3 weeks to happen. Sold the magic and got a toon. Outboard is not fast enough but easy cleanup and launching. My wife has never been the boater i have been since 1969, so I am thinking about getting rid of that and going back to the beginning with and 18 ft jet boat.

Jet skis can become a rabbit hole of labor and fun. It seems like once you rebuild a motor, it's time to port, polish, add a pipe, carb, etc...... the never ending need to upgrade and gain more power.Thankfully I only have my son's and mine to work on.

Guns, I just shoot them and then clean them. I'm not much on modifying them.
haha it started as a 500 buck ski good running.ended up with some add ons, repaint, jet trim, sponsons, bars, skat impeller. then got to the porting head milled and 1/2 pipe. Now it scoots pretty good.

But it has been pretty reliable and even got my daughter a nice 94 550 reed ski.Alot of times i go by myself so its simple and have a spot at parker for month of june so midweek is nice.

I can only speak for myself, after I achieve a goal I kinda lose interest.

I loved off-roading, I mean It was all I wanted to do for 40 years. But now I'm not sure why I should bother. I've kind of done most everything, save for a few ideas that peculate in the back of my mind.

The exception to this is the people. I miss some of the relationships, I miss the brotherhood of racing, I miss the bench racing. I miss those moments when the trail ride stops for a break.

Maybe you need some boat bitches that you can share the experience with? Maybe they will clean the boat?

Yeah… used to love riding. Then I started doing it for work. I have a 2022 BMW 1250RT. It’s been ridden twice in the last year.

It’s a chapter I think I need to close.. seen too much shit and lost too many close friends to it, and it’s always in the back of my mind.

1. Take time off. Shouldn't feel any need to use the boat just because it costs you - what else are you going to spend the money on?

The boatlift and dock you can consider as appreciating real assets. Why sell them for only the possibility of a higher return (that you'll likely die with unspent) and give up boating out your door?

And can't think of the squeeze in nominal terms - $15k may be a significant amount of money, but your NVDA moves more than that every day. Proportionately, the cost/use has probably never been lower?

Also, you shouldn't expect spending your second dollar to be as satisfying as the first.

2. Swap the Glacier Bay for the Walker Bay RIB you'd looked at. Less work and easy to trailer if want to explore boating elsewhere.

I have started this see old friends (45 years ago) and helping run an alcohol hydro and a AA/FA. We all stret raced back in the 70's. If we could get a track closer to Havasu I would probably build another one.

Meh?
Some things I suppose.

Others? You own it a long time and eventually you have something either really dialed in or are constantly upgrading and trying new shit on it.

I have a couple of 1987 quads, owned one since new and the other since 94.

One is dialed in...the Honda 250
But could use a new top end.
The banshee? A constant and long lasting slow progression.💯

Hell, my truck is 20 years old in August
It looks 100😂😂

Well . . . since I shared my surfing burnout . . . I'll share my continued stoke for boating fishing. But I'll start with a disaster I saw on monday . . .

I was at the Trolling Moto Doctor in Lakewood dropping off my trolling motor as the steering cable snapped. They quit making that part years ago, but Nick still had one in stock.
In the back I noticed a familiar boat . . . . a 2024 26 Foot Caymas Hybrid Center Console with a new Merc 400 outboard.
I said, "Is that Benny's boat"? . . . Nick, 'Yep" . . . Me, "What's he having done" ?. . . . Nick, "The boat split in half down the rub rail on both sides". o_Oo_Oo_O
Nick said they had to take to whole top cap off and re-attach it to the hull . . . . he was hooking the electronics back up that they were having trouble with.
I can't imagine splitting a $200K boat in half . . . I'd blow a head gasket.

I've known Benny for 25+ years . . . he runs guide trips out to San Clemente Island . . . so he beats the snot out of his stuff.
I drove away thinking to myself . . . "i'm so glad that I never upgraded from my little frisbee". I use that thing at least once a week in the ocean . . . and I try to get out to Mojave, Havasu, Blythe, Walters, and Martinez at least 5-6 times a year. I wouldn't be on the water NEARLY as much if I had a 'regulation' boat.

I know I'm an outlier here on this website with my little old boat & truck , . . . shoot, most peoples boat trailers here probably cost more than my boat/ truck combined. 🤣 But we all share the same stoke for water. 🤘

For some of you guys who may be getting tired of dealing with it . . . I totally get it . . . we used to have bigger boats & they were a TON more work. To the point of thinking "ahhh, I wanna go out tomorrow, but I don't want to deal with the boat routine, so shine it".
Before throwing up the white flag . . . maybe consider what some here have mentioned doing recently and try a downsized rig before calling it quits.
It's sure a LOT easier all the way around to throw shit together for a quick rip. . . the gas tanks are smaller, the coolers are smaller (well, maybe not for some here 😉), there's WAY less real estate to clean afterwards, and they launch, park & dock easier. There's just a lot of upsides. I can't tell you how many people come up to me at the ramp and say they are tired of all the work & costs of their bigger boat & are thinking of downsizing, or buying a smaller rig like mine.
Shoots, if it ain't your jam, you can always sell it . . . 🤷‍♂️

I get that I'm on the extreme end of downsizing 🙃. . . bit I'm single, never married, and no kids . . . and no friends either ! 🤣
But I'm a long way off from burning out on boating / fishing !!! 🤘⚡💥⚡🤘

BTW . . . that middle pick was taken at Parker. We piled my old girlfriend at the time with her 3 kids in w/ an ez up, cooler, wakeboard, a pair of ski's, and all the kids shit in my little 15. We rolled from Bluewater up to that Sandbar across from Sundance for the day. So 5 of us ! There's a funny story about that . . .but I'll save that for another day LOL . . .

Havasu and Glamis, I get burned out at times. Glamis is more work by far but the kids like it more. Havasu is more relax time and less work being we have all our stuff out there at the lake house but the kids get bored easier. There are times where I want to sell it all but that's usually short lived.

We do glamis and havasu/Parker. I'm pretty much burnt out by the end of each season and ready to do the other at that time. My wife and I will say glamis is definitely our favorite. We both drive sand cars and our group is typically pretty solid and there isn't much drama. We have a motorhome and stacker and our program is pretty dialed so we never say its that much work. Our kids are getting bigger and riding now so we really enjoy taking them on small rides or cruising around camp. The river can be hit or miss the entire season. Its either a super chill trip with one boat in for the family or non stop craziness and we will put in 9 different boats (not kidding we did 9 boats one trip last year🤦‍♂️) . I 100% agree with @CoolCruzin updating is the ultimate chase for me. I flip boats here and there but if its a cool boat I keep it for the season and then sell towards the end. Just keeps the excitement going. I've been updating my sand car every season for the last 5 years and its pretty much done now so I think our offroad updates will be more like a new motorhome or stacker if i can convince the wife. I'm 31 and have been doing it my whole life so I do get burnt out here and there but watching my kids grow up doing the exact same things as me (honestly better because our toys weren't as cool as theres) is what makes it all worth it. My son started riding at the track at 2 years old and now rips around on his quad better than most kids. My daughter loves riding in the sand car and boat with me and she'll be riding by next year so as hard as it gets sometimes theres no way i'll ever give it up

I own a WorldCat, not a Glacier Bay. Lol

FWIW……..

I have kinda sorta been casually thinking about an EASY boat.

Here is why I like the boat below. It has a power hardtop that encapsulates the boat. After a cruise…….. instead of cleaning, I just lower the top and walk away. I’d also have it wrapped, so after a few years of not even hitting it with a hose, I just peel off the wrap, and it looks new again. Very little hassle. The 1 thing that’s keeps me from pursuing the boat below is the fact it doesn’t have a head. The next size up, has one, but I don’t like the 23’ as much as the Alfastreet 21 Open Outboard, with power hardtop.

The boat below is locally available.

I could never be without a boat.
I built a garage just to store my boat out of the weather. I’ve owned my boat since new…40years.

I think you need to find another place to park your boat in a new location. Move it around, and enjoy. Get it on a trailer.

One of the reasons I live in Phoenix are the boating options, and services.

Now that I moved to an offroad friendly state I am doing alot more maintenance on my rzr than ever before. I am still doing my monthly 500-700 mile trips and now add random days and night locally. I’m averaging right now 1000 miles a month from October to April.

This year rzr has been ALOT of maintenance. And costly because of that. Cost to use is fairly cheap tho.

Boating way way way less maintenance. But way more exspensive. I do not have a place to stay at the river. We were doing the trailer thing at beachcomber but all of us were over that program and the heat.

Getting an air bnb is ok but parking is always unknown. Food is a challenge as some places don’t have alot of cooking stuff. And it’s hard on us at the end of a day when we’re tired.

I love boating but not having my own place sucks.

I’m trying to sell my trailer but no luck there, that won’t get me a place. I’ve actually thought about selling my boat. But problem is getting a new one (new to me) will be pricey!!!!

Then I have guns, rc cars, video games, as hobbies too. Rc cars just stopped @ChrisV im looking at selling my whole program if your are interested.

Rc8b3.2 nitro and e buggy

Too of the line everything. With tires for days, chargers, tools. Enough spares for 3 cars. And more let me know.

Also looking at selling two xd 40 cal. Both used with mags. Make me an offer!!!

I’m finding downsizing my life and going simple is easier. I’m doing 3 weeks a year at the river instead of 2/3 days at a time it’s a week at a time. Also cheaper

What happened?

Also I’ll add having friends to help entertain all the kiddos and everyone sure helps. That seems where we are lacking sometimes. Schedules don’t align. Different ages and more.

I have started this see old friends (45 years ago) and helping run an alcohol hydro and a AA/FA. We all stret raced back in the 70's. If we could get a track closer to Havasu I would probably build another one.
… I rest my case👍

May or may not have clipped a large rock on the way back home. 😳. Something in the front end is making an awesome noise. JM picked it up today. Waiting to hear from them.

I tend to get bored fairly quickly, usually once I hit high-intermediate skill level and the learning curve slows down. Also seems to coincide with buying the much more expensive, upgraded toy. And then it sits.

Thinking back to all the hobbies that I really got into for a time, then faded on, roughly in order:

Boogie boarding
Snowboarding
Surfing
Body building
Scuba Diving
Hang gliding
Jet bote-ing / Skurfing
Mountain biking
Dirt biking
RC helicopters / planes
Offroading with Jeep / Prerunner
Stand up jet ski
Self defense - guns / martial arts
Onewheel on/off road

I still do some of these, but the frequency gets more and more rare with each year.

Two things I still spend a shit ton of time on, and have all my life: video games and movies.

Take a year off, and if you don't miss it, you've made the right decision. If you miss it, get back in and maybe approach it differently this time. I've gotten burnt out on a lot of things over the years (right now its my guitar hobby and motivation to learn new stuff). I find if I put something aside for awhile, the problem (lack of motivation) will solve itself.

Here is why I like the boat below. It has a power hardtop that encapsulates the boat. After a cruise…….. instead of cleaning, I just lower the top and walk away.

Can you not rig up a curtained canopy?

Not allowed?

The bad trips are few and far between, but I think they add to the burnout after years. i was thinking of one of my worse trips which didn't even end up being a river trip. Are norm was to leave Friday morning when we could after I worked all night 12 hours plus added drive from Norco to Carson and back to and from work, so 14-15 hours and worked the night before for that extra exhaustion factor. i got home 6am and started loading up, my ex worked at frahmn dodge and had to go in for an hour or so, we turned into 11am but we were good, we boned out even though i was tired. Get to Vidal junction and we get a call my ex's kid had been stabbed at a gas station, so we flipped around and started heading home, at this point I'm 4+ hours into the drive, no sleep since day before and driving back at one point on desert center I was seeing shit like I had taken 2 hits of acid, got to hospital about 9pm and stayed there most the night, you just don't know how tired the human body can get until you pull some shit like that, the kid lived and so did are river trips but that was one I put against anyones shitty river story.

There’s times you need to regulate.
