Speaking of “ burnout “ since most all of us are full hot rodders maybe we should have a thread here about our most notorious burnout we ever did. I have one and I’ll start tomorrow.

We are toast. Have been for few years.
Every summer I say I'm done. That added with work stress I think this time we are really going to find another hobby.
As crazy as it sounds there actually needs to be a exit plan for us from havasu.
Not everything will sell in 1 month. Plus seasonal sales.
Boat is first. That will either be me selling or maxed out.
After that we will revisit winter havasu fun. See if that's still worth the squeeze.

Side note, we went to mammoth this summer. It was a better weekend than a lake weekend. That was a sign..

Anyone looking for a toon?

Most burnouts bore me. Sitting foot braked or line locked destroying the tires well anyone and almost any car can do it. I hope your story is you striping the freeway at 80+! 😂

It's all about ease of use...

When I lived in California the river trips were tiresome and offroading was worse. If I can't be out playing with the toys in 30 minutes or less it will eventually lead to burn out. I live in havasu now and the old sparks have been rekindled. If I have a couple hours to burn I have a bunch of options with basically no work needed. I have had days where we went out in the side by side before breakfast, then took the boat out when my son got home from school

As others have said the drive and crowds have really burned me out. I have been going to Havasu and Mead since I was a kid in the 70s. The last several years its become a pain in the ass just getting out of So Cal and the traffic issues that seem to constantly happen in the desert. Then a few days later do it all over again to get home.

We bought our Lavey new and for the first few years it was 3 day weekends twice a month from May until September. Every since the COVID shit storm we have only been going a few times each summer with the boat still only having 195 hrs on it. Last year we didn't even have the desire to use it mainly due to the drive and just the cost of doing a weekend. Its become a lot of work as we have gotten older with cleaning the boat etc. Getting harder to justify paying the monthly storage in Havasu, insurance, annual services and all else that goes along with it. However, it would be hard to replace if we did sell as the boat is pristine and paid for. Tough decision.

Last few years I have gotten back into riding Harleys which I took a break from. Bought a new Road Glide and have really been enjoying doing rides with friends. Living in Ventura County there are countless bitchin rides and destinations to enjoy as well as being able to ride pretty much year around. Very little work involved can pull out of the garage have a fun weekend and pull back in the garage when done. Very little cost involved to use and maintain too.

Motorsport hobby’s can be a fickle beast, you start out owning things and you enjoy everything that goes with it. Over time those things begin to own you and you find yourself being a slave to the things you own. Don’t care what it is, I get to a point where I’ll just let things sit after a while and not even bother with them.

These days my absolute favorite thing to do is take my dog for a walk. 😂

I've been in a hiatus for about 6 years. Some hobbies stopped because of finances or they became boring or I couldn't find anyone with similar interest. The boating thing slowed way down because I got priced out of the group. I could handle spending money boat related but couldn't handle going out to eat for every meal with the group and it was always going to be at a high dollar restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Tough to swing that when you have a mortgage and make $22/hr. I was big into collecting guns when I lived in California and it was the hunt that was fun. Moved to Az 6 years ago and haven't bought a gun and forgot about of half of what I have. I don't even bother talking guns because every gun owner is a whack job that then starts complaining about politics. I'm a die hard dirt bike guy. 5 years ago everyone sold out and bought sxs. With time I knew they'd get back on dirt bikes and I'll have people to ride with again. I refuse to own or ride in a sxs. Like mentioned already the drive and crowds took a lot of motivation out of doing stuff.

One common theme in these responses is boating “season”.

My boating season started continuously 11 years ago. It’s HIGH season right now. It is the equivalent of the phrase “Endless Summer”. I wish I had a yearly break! lol

Maybe that’s why I am getting burned out. I moved to Florida and have done more Boatimg than my wildest dreams ever imagined…….. 1000’s of hours.

We bought a saltwater friendly boat a few years ago. Islander is not fond of our 10+ year old fifth wheel. We'll move on from that.
We did a bunch of summer Dana Point weekends renting a slip. There's actually a sandbar in the harbor lol
Well go to a less expensive park for a few months and bring the boat home for the heat of the summer.
Not totally burned out, but adjusting

Havasu was until I got my own house there. No calling family to warn I’m on my way and with ….. Plus once there in my own house, i don’t feel obligated to get out, I can do nothing and still be good.
Glamis, still love it, buuuuuut last couple years I think about selling
loading up and unloading solo can suck
usually head out early Friday, then text or calls every hour for hey wait for me I’ll be there in….. so fridays wasted
Saturdays, No one fixes their shit between trips, so they use glamis trip as maintenance time. So half the group works on 1 guys car before the next guys shit needs love too. We end up doing 1 ride maybe 2
sunday usually 1 ride to Osborne before loading up to go home
get home unload and think man I should of just stayed home this weekend, 2 weeks later repeat, lol

I literally spend thousands for prep and maint to try and make sure my shits dialed, plus the 1000 or so per trip. If someone said I’ll give you 250k and pay you 2k a month for 6 months out of the year to not go to glamis, how could I say no. But instead I paid/pay that. Wise people don’t always make smart choices 🤣

Hobbies ?

I miss Mountain Biking
Picked up a hobby so I can kill time. Now I’m so balls deep into it that it takes up sooo much time. Couldn’t sleep the other night cause I’m trying to figure out why the buggy isn’t handling right. 🤣 Boating season needs to start.

I used to love RC racing back when Socal raceway was in GG and HB. Also did OCRC when they were open.

Where are you racing ?

Hit that "way too much work" crap for Glamis 5 years ago.
Sold the 5th wheel toyhauler and bought a nice 5th wheel. Life is much easier now.

The river got that way to me. I spent 15 years going 2-3x month currently I’m going 2-3x a year. I switched to going to the desert and off roading.

The last two years chasing my son around the country playing football has been our thing. He’s now at a big 10 school playing ball with 2 more years of eligibility so that’s our life. It’s gets to be a lot with the travel but it’s also sad knowing 2 more seasons and that’s it. He’s been playing ball since he was 8 and football has been a big part of our lives. Looks promising that he will
Move on the other next level so hopefully we have that. The river is starting to become a bigger part of our lives again after a long break. So we will see.

Some people just enjoy being in the environment and hanging out more than riding. Nothing wrong with that. While it's kinda annoying people show up with broken stuff, it's not your problem and don't let it live in your head. Be happy you get to hangout out at the place of your people.

We go through phases and adjust.

Boating = I was getting burned out on weekends with rental houses. Always felt rushed and Thursday night and Sunday night were long when you added the drive. and that was with the boat in Havasu storage. Moved ToyHauler into the Islander and the fun came back and feeling of being rushed went away. 5 years later, I was getting burned out on the Islander. With the money spent on the monthly lease, I wanted a trip every 3 weeks, but daughter commitments kept us away. Just signed by 2025 Islander contract, but only for Aug to Nov. That is the period of time we have limited conflicts and used the boat and Islander the most over the last three years.

Off -Roading = we enjoy it, but ToyHauler was becoming PIA as we transitioned from quads to SXS’s. Sold ToyHauler and got RV with enclosed. Easier, but a ton of work to prep and clean. Time away in desert seems to offset the prep and cleaning.

When I start to get burned, I take time away and adjust. Usually that helps.

I grew up boating. A boat was my first ‘toy’ when I got out of college. I will always boat, but when and where will most likely change in the next ten years. Might be heading back to my roots and putting the boat on a lake in Northern Wi where I grew up boating. Then travel in the RV with the Jeep Oct to May. That was one reason we got the RV. It will allow us to start snowbirding before we retire, since my wife and I both can work remote,

I really like the comments about the juice being worth the squeeze.

Year four of snowbird life at Islander.

I swear not a single day goes by this season in which Angie and I are not questioning if we are getting enough value out of the expense.

Seems to happen in January when the wind picks up and we are less inclined to be outside. She misses her kitchen, I miss my shop. I've got two classic 4WDs in there that I could be working on why the weather is unfavorable. By March we will be stoked for the weather I am sure.

We are wondering if we would not be better off taking the money we spend on snowbird life and go rent an VRBO for a month somewhere else. That frees us up for new adventures.

Like @riverroyal said, unwinding would take some time. I would damn near give our DP away to get out of it. I hate this thing. It is unlikely I will drive it out of LHC.

Skiing/Snowboarding. Totally burned out. I'm sick of dealing with the rude pricks on the roads and on the mountain.
My kids love it, so I'll keep doing it though. Currently on the mountain waiting for races to start. Can't drink beer on race days..

Whats even worse is that that rude driving transfers directly to the ski slopes. Bunch of dickweeds out there anymore whether on purpose or just being clueless. I had a condo in East Vail for 15yrs and really burned out on skiing, especially when the Epic pass drew Epic crowds and ruined the experience for me. I've re-discovered my love for skiing the last few years following the "road less travelled" at smaller resorts like Monarch, Loveland, A Basin, Purgatory, etc during the week. Love it now. If I had to deal with weekend traffic and overcrowded resorts, I woud of hung it up by now. Good for you, though, for supporting your kids in this. Something they will always remember and cherish!

I make the drive from Phoenix to Havasu 2 times a month from March through October and 1 time a month the rest of the year, I'll get a little burnout at some point during the year from the drive. This will be year 5 of having my place there so I'm a newby compared to some, I did the RV to the lake in N Nev for 20 years every weekend during boating season and was burned out by the end for sure. Boat problems can burn me out a bit also but so far not ready to quit the boating lifestyle anytime soon. I'm 62 and hope to be active boating for at least another 10 years or so, but if I get burnt I'll find a new way to spend my time. I mix some skiing and dirt biking in as well but not nearly the pace when I was younger, dirt bikes and racing were my big go to when I lived in N Nev as boat season was way shorter than Az.
What lake in N Nev? We are in Lyon County.

The driving and amount of humans was becoming the burn out for my wife and me. 4 hours to Parker
5.5 hours to mammoth
3-3.5 to glamis
And these are times Without getting stuck in traffic which was rare. We moved to Minden Nevada and I’ve been on my dirtbike with my kid everyday this week. Literally off-roading out of my driveway and the terrain is mostly sand.. that scratch is itched. Topaz lake and Lake Tahoe are both 30-40 mins from my house, mammoth is 2 hours now, ski resorts here are within 30 mins. We moved to literally be closer to doing what we loved and so far it’s been great! Just cold af. But ripping laps in my backyard with my 2 yo on the pit bike with me is the best feeling ever. Riding my dirtbike from my garage with no loading/unloading is a game changer. Can’t wait to drag the 210 up here and be able to pull it out of the water and take my time cleaning it in its own garage instead of sweating into my eyes when it’s 115 out.

Currently it's been boating.. I've taken my boat out twice in maybe 3 years and I live 1/2 mile from the boat ramp. The restoration of my home in Italy and work has drained the money and the will to keep going. But this weekend I spent a lot of time cleaner her up, registered, tow insurance, and ordered some things. We're going again as soon as the weather gets over 75 again.

SoCal race way is where I use to race also. I’ve been going to Huckleberry in Anaheim. Down the street from my house.

@Bpracing1127 I blew too much money last couple weeks so I’m good. Thank you though. It’s been tough to find time to race cause of my kids.

im feeling it right now, considering selling the boat and letting the storage in Parker go. between the cost of the storage, upkeep on the boat, the drive time and having to find somewhere to stay and the drive, im kind of just over it. considering a bayliner type boat to use in the salt which is 15 minutes to the launch ramp and can putt the harbor with kids for an hour or go fishing.
We sold our place in Havi and the lake boat some years ago when my wife told me she was over the heat. Bought a relatively cheap 30 foot Chaparral and put it in a slip in Harbor Island. Best move we ever made, we boat 10X more now.

I wouldn't call it burnout, but I do find myself taking breaks from my hobby (guitar), usually after a hitting some goal such as a gig or final exam - I find that I hit it hard going towards an end point, then once I hit that end, I back off for a bit to catch up on what I've been neglecting. I do however get back into it once I've caught up on my other things, like the honey-do list...

Kinda like the holidays and sex - big buildup, hit the finish line, then take a break for a bit and catch my breath, but always good to get back into it again...

No burnout but it has changed. For me, It's because of our group. As long as we can do it, I think we will. We are all in mid /late 50's and still boat Memorial to Labor day. Every other weekend, 3-4 days. These days, mostly drinking, swimming and playing cards on the Barge with a little boat riding thrown in, on the side. Dinners and Cocktails are amazing! Same group been at it since our early 20's. Not sure what I'd do if it stopped? Scary to even think about.

Grand kids are starting now. Fingers crossed and look forward to the ski board and tube stage again.

One of my close friends left So Cal for Minden 5 years ago. They love it and he rides a ton with his son too. His folks have a nice ranch over in Gardnerville as well. Only thing he complains about are the winds in spring. Every time he comes back to Calif he cant wait to leave says he feels the stress.

My wife and I own a CNC shop. Along with that, a whole bunch of cars, motorcycles, and a boat. We’re very proud of our all original 1958 ranch house which is starting to show its age and need some attention. At this point in my life, it’s time to start liquidating. It’s not fun taking the boat out anymore because of the crowds and all the regulations and the cost and the drive. My wife and I just had a nice lunch with some cocktails and we looked at each other and agreed it’s time for the boat and some of the cars to go. You sort of feel like you’re giving in or you’re surrendering to the stress. We used to love to take the boat out. That was our thing for many many years. My Shop is my hobby now and honestly I’d rather have a new CNC machine than a new boat. That’s when you know it’s time to start getting rid of stuff.

To make everything a lot more enjoyable, I started making each trip a day longer. Take a day and just relax and be in the moment, I will continue to make every trip longer and enjoy the time more. Less trips, but longer is my goal.

Nope, not really. I rotate the hobbies just enough.

Snowboarding. The goal is 25 days on the mountain per season. By the end of the season, I'm ready for boating.

Great Lakes boating for us starts in May and ends in September. It's a good run and probably my favorite thing we do.

I mix in car stuff here and there as the weather permits. So, I never really get sick of that, either.

Travel is mixed in throughout the year and we're always getting to new places, which is hard to get bored of.

Started at Glamis and Pismo in the late 70s and early 80s , was into sand it was my whole life 110 ATC, then a 185s, then a 250r. Had a Toyota crusier with a V8, then a buggy it was my whole life. When I met my future wife in 1983 [been 41 years] we would go to Glamis or my parents place at the Salton Sea every other weekend but 3 trips in a row someone at Glamis got killed right in front of us and my wife could not take it [her dad had just died at 47 and she was a mess].
A friend invited us to the river Red Rooster Blythe and of course me being me I jump in with both feet went from a 18ft Rodger running circle races NJBA to being a partner on a BAH hydro in 1995 all the while having a trailer at Needles with a 21 Daytona with a V8 outboard and then a 25 Daytona with 2 V8 outboards again every weekend we were either at a dragboat race or at the trailer at the river from 1983 till 1996 .
My son decided he wanted to race so we got him a junior dragster in 1995 back in the beginning. Of course what started as something to race 5 times a year turned in to racing 30 plus weekends a year from Calif to New Jersey. But then I would look at the new Daytona that had not been used in 2 years and the trailer at the river that we had not been to in 2 years so boom sold the trailer and traded the boat for a new raceshop and we were off. The next 30 plus years it was no vacations, no time off nothing but dragracing 30 to 40 weekends a year. Leave Friday as soon as I could [been self employed my whole life 12 hours a day] race Friday night, Sat and Sun and drive home all nite to be at work Monday at 6am. So now we have sponsors, a racecar building business, truck driver , 2 trucks and trailers and so on. I did what I always do after I took a hobby and turned it into a business. Even after many wins and 5 world championships I was over it, the fun was gone but we could not go back. Lucky we have enough help money wise that I could stop going to all the races and we could get help so my son could go by himself. I feel bad because he asked his mom all the time why I dont like it anymore. I was just burned out.
Fast forward to today I retired at 63 and now I am going junior dragracing again with my grandson this weekend, My wife decided she wanted a SXS and we are again enjoying the desert and we have a small 20ft boat and go back to the river Parker 4 or 5 times a year. All it took was a year off of doing nothing and getting rid of my 60 hour a week business and everything that I was bored with is now fun again. It was all about having no time to get ready and/or get everything cleaned when we got home that took the fun out of it, of course I was anal about everything being perfect that caused alot of problems also. Now hopefully I will have 10 to 15 years to truly enjoy life

Unfortunately I gave up surfing after many years.
#1 reason was the crowd ….. everyone wants to hustle you for EVERY single wave , even the shitty ones.

Final straw …. one day some dude who was a way better surfer than me seemed to be paddling for EVERY single wave I was trying to catch …. I tried my best to get away from him but it was like he was following me.
Finally I had enough, stopped and yelled at the guy , “Are you gonna surf right here”?!?! He said ‘Yeah’. I said “Cool, I’m gonna paddle 300 yards down that way so I’m not in your way anymore “ !!!! … he replied , “You’re not in my way” !!! … to which I said , “Well apparently I am since you seem to feel the need to paddle for every fucking wave I’m trying to catch”!!!!! ….. he came back with “It’s not my fault you can’t paddle”!!! …. & I said , “Nope, it’s sure not, and that’s why I’m paddling way the fuck away from you”!!!!!

The dude didn’t know what to say …. Usually dudes just bark back & forth talking shit, then keep surfing.

My buddies were dying laughing & still tell that story to this day ! 😆

I was over it.
The crowds killed surfing for me too. I’ll surf crappy waves with little or no people over good, crowded waves. El Porto, Lowers, Doheny are not options…. Same with fishing.

YUP! I see a common theme here. We are all kinda aging out and have spent way too much money on this hobby we love!

I downsized, got the hell out of Cali, moved to AZ where I can get to the local lake in 25mins, or to open desert in 15 mins. It sure makes a difference on how the day is planned now like others have mentioned!

I sold anything custom or exotic. I want turn key and basic now. I am tired or wrenching and maintaining.

Mentioned it before, the end game of all those years of the traffic and bombing runs sucked the fun and life out of me. Just enjoying the "little" moments now. Or at least trying to. I do get FOMO on occasion but its just not my life anymore. This was a few days ago, Im with my daughter in our neighborhood park. Sat in the grass and watched her run around collecting pine cones. The dopamine hit I got was damn close to the old days!

You better start cranking out mo babies @gqchris fill up that golf cart :)
OH HELL NO!!! 😂 I told the wife if she has that in her head, then lets start the divorce planning early! I am one and done. I dont know how you guys do it. Hardest thing I have ever done! 51 years old and a toddler is insanity.

Yea the 6 seater was because my Dad and his wife who recently moved here hinted they would "love to come on the rides around the neighborhood". So here we are, its sits empty 99% of the other times!

Haha I have no kids but finally feel like I could afford a few. I have 2 6 seater golf carts though. A 4 seater would be a lot easier to maneuver 3 point turns get old.
