Best to you and your family at this difficult time. My wife had a lime sized tumor removed in July of 2019. They can do amazing things these days if you are at the right facility, We have met some amazing people and a few that had difficulties, The wife went to UCSF and they are cutting edge. I assume that they can’t do a biopsy as was the case with my wife. Tumors are not always cancerous so I hope that is the case for your nephew. If you need any advise just reach out to me. I found that it was great to have discussion with people who had a similar situation. We have met a lot of great people at the right time to get advise of how to best handle things.

Seriously reach out if needed!!!!!

Thank you everyone for the support. I've racheted down the anxiety a bit and praying for my brother and his family. My brother is the director of facilities for the Santa Clara County hospital system, and I believe he has used his contacts to arrange for a top neurosurgery team to perform the surgery. I'm getting secondhand information right now.

Your support is greatly appreciated. The positive energy being sent to Liam by everyone here will help provide a good outcome. I will post updates when I can.

A report from my brother:

A drain has been inserted and Liam is off the ventilator. And awake, talking. The easier part is over, and the prelim radiologist report was about what they were thinking. His surgery is first one scheduled tomorrow AM. Chief Pediatric neurosurgeon will be assisted by a very well spoken attending NS and the rest of the team met with us as well. They expect surgery to be at least 6 hours. His team has been very forthright, which of course is difficult to hear. He is a trooper though.

He has been cleared to eat a burrito (he chose from the menu).

At least six hours. Damn.

Thanks for the update. Please keep them coming!!!!

Fyi, Wife’s surgery was to be 6 hours. Great communication the first 5 hours front he staff then silence. Ended up going 9 hours. During the procedure they had Difficulty with brain mapping and location of parts of the tumor. Doctor said he was working like he was standing on his head. She does struggle at times now but she is alive and 90%. This is difficult for the wife at times. keep this in mind with your nephew for the next few years. Make sure that he is working with a nseurphyologist. Use every specialist in hopes of making the recovery better.

I received a call from my sister about an hour ago. I was told that yesterday evening my youngest brother, who lives in San Jose, had taken my sixteen year old nephew to the ER. He was complaining of a severe headache.

An MRI revealed he has a brain tumor. It's located at the base of his skull, and the spinal column and spinal cord are involved. He will undergo surgery tomorrow at 7 AM.

I can't process this. Liam is a brilliant kid. He has knocked down straight As in AP classes for years. He is a loving young man, and he's everything to my brother and sister-in-law, their only child. They put out word today not to call or text them. They are overwhelmed by the obvious implications of the diagnosis.

My sister was present when Liam was born, and she has been a big part of his life since then. When she called me, I couldn't understand what she was saying because she was crying uncontrollably. My 86 year old Dad lost a grandson three years ago, when my beautiful nephew Andrew committed suicide at the age of sixteen. His heart has been broken again.

Please pray for my family members.

Possibly the headaches and not down sick indicate early symtom. They will get it all and find benign. Also sounds like aggressive Doctors, they getting after it right now. 👍

If he hasn't experienced paralysis or seizures he has a really, really good chance they caught it early and he'll recover ok.

Damn man, that's a tough read. Wishing the best for your family RRR.

Kids are resilient, my niece went thru a brain surgery to try and stop epileptic seizures and ended up on a vent and in ICU for 4-months, but she came thru.

Positive thoughts bud.

Sorry to hear this also. UCSF is a great place, if he is there. I actually have been in there 2 times for surgery. They are top notch and actually do a lot of training to Doctors everywhere. Stay strong.

I haven't heard anything yet. The surgery is scheduled to last until 1 PM PST, and could go longer. Not knowing what's going on is hard.

And again, I really appreciate your support. I'm about two clicks below panic, and reading all of the messages left by everyone is comforting. Thank you.

When my Mom went in to get her Colon cancer removed, I couldnt just sit and wait for answers. I went to work. Everybody at the office was looking at me with the WTF look in their eyes. I had to take my mind off everything. My dad (who was an owner of the company I worked for at the time) called me when she was out of surgery and I went back to the hospital.

My advice, do whatever you can to keep a clear mind off of what is going on.

Im not a religious man so positive thoughts coming his, and your way.

Liam is still in surgery. My brother said the prep took 3.5 hours before the actual removal of the tumor began. The tumor is located around his brain stem, I'm sure this complicates things.

My thoughts are with you and your family.

I always have such a hard time comprehending how stuff like this happens to such good, young people.

Been afraid to open the thread since yesterday.
Some good things I think is that surgery was so quickly decided on.
There's been no mention of malignancy and such a quick move to excise sort of confirms that?
Hang tough, he’s in real good hands.
