Hello All,
Figured I would tell my story like the Checkered Schiada...awesome find by the way. I grew up with my parents taking us to the Parker strip like so many others. Stayed at Buckskin, Echo and finally ended up with a place at the Marina Village 30 years ago this year. Anyways, back in the mid to late 70's, my dad bought a 1972 Schiada. He ended up putting a blown 426 Hemi into it and had it for a 5 to 10 years and then eventually sold it to get a "family friendly" boat. In December of 2007, Steve Harper (Thanks Steve!!) called my Pop up and said that he thought that he had my Dads old boat in his driveway. Not a week later, I bought it. I will be posting some pics of it back when my Dad had it and in it's current state...stripped. I am in the middle of restoring it to its luster. It's a slow project as I am learning as I go about fiberglass and what steps to take and when to take them. I am also in contact with Lee Spindler and he's guiding me along the way (Thanks Lee). I'll post more pics as I progress. New floors, paint and a blown BBC. I can't afford the Hemi...dammit..:grumble: It's been a pain in the ass!!! But it will be well worth it.

Steve

Very cool! Looking forward to seeing the progress! Are you going to do period correct hardware? Or will you be using newer style hardware?

My parents have owned a place in Marina Village Annex for 30 years now. It's off of Palo Verde. Are you in Marina Village as well?

Hello RiverDave,
I have kept all of the original hardware and I'll be using as much of it as I can salvage. It's going to retain it's Hallcraft steering and strut as well as the polished Hallcraft V-drive. It'll have a dry-sumped, blown BBC with a 2 speed powerglide. I'm going to keep the old gauges in it as well as the Jones tach. As for as the rest of the aluminum hardware...all new rails and motor-mounts and such. I can't wait to get the fiberglass laid down so I can start installing everything. :party2:

steves dad jim invited me to go to the river for the first time 25 years ago, I was 17. I will never forget my fist ride in this boat it accelerated very hard and I can remember seeing the tach at 7200. Well like i said 25 year and 6 boats and a house in marine village north for 19 years. I tell jim that first trip to the river turned out to be very expensive.

Thanks for the compliment. Can't wait to have it finished. I'm sure we'll see each other at one of the many regattas if we don't see each other at the river first. Your boat has a great story behind it. :thumbsup

 Congrats on picking up your families old boat !!, we did a resto on a 1971 Schiada flatty and finished it last August, one of the things we did was install a 2 two speed powerglide, it works awesome !!!, Prime Marine did all the fabbing for us and me and my dad did all the final installs.
Billy B did the paint work, he could probably duplicate your original paint if you wanted.
Also if you need to see pics of the two speed setup let me know.

Hi Scott,
I've chatted with you over on the PB site about your boat. It's really a beauty. I'd love to see how you set your powerglide up. Is it a shorty? If you can send some pictures my way, that'd be great. My email is [email protected].
Thanks again,
Steve

Hi everyone...I think I was the 2nd owner of the Schiada flat and my son Steve (1homeblown) is the 6th or 7th. I saw this boat once a week for 6 or 8 months, never making the 50 foot walk to look at it, outside a heat treating business, uncovered in the weather. I finally walked over to it and noticed it was a Schiada. Went over to the office and inquired about it and found it belonged to the owner of that business. It had no engine, had been rigged but no cav plates, Hallcraft v-drive was there but hardly anything else. To my surprise, the owner had everthing wrapped up in boxes including a brand new in the crate LS-7 long block. I bought the whole works for $5000.00. At the same time I had an old Hallett that had a 440 wedge chysler that I had just taken out and installed a 426 tunnel ram hemi. Well, I pulled the 426 out of the Hallett, installed the LS7, and installed the 426 in the Schiada and added the blower.
That Schiada is the fastest boat I have ever been in and also the most unpredictable. It would never do the same thing twice, but if it took a good set, it was a rocket in it's time. If my son would have passed on buying that boat back, I would have.
Stevel commented on that ride at 7200 rpm, I remember that ride like I just hopped out of the boat. That was the fastest ride I've ever been on and I'll never forget it. Good times!!

I hope so. Steve Harper gave me a lot of good information regarding motor placement and such. i'm hoping to get some information and compare notes with Luvrschiadas placement with a powerglide. either way its gonna be a hoot!!

If you need a trans shop I just had Californa Performance Transmissions in HB get my powerglide running. Long story short they figured out why I didn't have reverse (old style cases don't like to be turned into shorties without some mods it turns out:rolleyes:).

Side note - CPT is Art Carr's company. Yes, that Art Carr! The Art Carr company you see today had nothing to do with him He sold it 10+ years ago (in a deal gone bad but I'll let him explain it if you go see him).

Anyways, super cool old guy with great stories. Worked with Leonard Schiada in the 70's on the adapter to bypass the torque converter. Has built tons of boat trannies.....

The real Art Carr tranny (T400)that was installed in my (parents previously) 1981 Schiada is still performing flawlessly !!! It is all original as built in 1981, just proper maintenance.

Steve, did you get the emails on the p.g. tranny I sent?

Justin, how you doin?

I started filling the holes in the stringers and block sanding the floors. So laaaaaaame!! Gettin my ass :smackbum:!!!

I'm also touching up where the old fiberglass gass tanks were glassed to the floor and sides. Drivers side is further along then the passenger side. Passenger side where the tank was is lookin a little rough.

AFUEL7067,
Thanks for chiming in:thumbsup. I'm trying to gather all of the history on the boat as I can including pictures. Let me know if you have any more information on the boat. Where it's been, pictures, who owned it, who it was sold to, stories the works. Anymore information you could provide would be appreciated. :thumbsup:thumbsup

Yup!! That's my Pop!! He told me a story that Dan had the blower re-stripped not long after he had bought it and it really woke the boat up:thumbsup!! Are you still in contact with Dan Oliver? I'm really trying to get some more pictures of it if I can. And thanks for the information!!

Thanks,

I'm so stoked on this boat. Those photos you have in your profile are rad. I love seeing pics from the 70's of flatbottoms towed by vans and driven by dudes with beards.

I can't wait to see this boat running again!:thumbsup

Filled the holes in the dash and 1 fuel fill. It has soooo many holes to fill. I think I counted 16 total. All of the holes in the dash. The holes on the deck from the tach. The fuel fills. the fuel vent. Three pick-ups in the floor. Four holes in the transom...I know there are some i'm forgetting about. It's on its way tho and I can't wait to get it back...:thumbsup

I'd love for Billy to paint it. I really can't look that far ahead due to the almighty dollar yet but he's on the top of the list. Scott,
If I could get my paint to look anything like yours...it'd be worth the wait. Your boat is bitchin. :thumbsup

Don't know about whether or not I should do an access door yet. Any input is appreciated on that. The next update I put up will hopefully contain pics of the finished floor. It should happen pretty soon...I hope.:D

There is no harm in having a hole in it. it would be a bitch to replace the bow eye with no hole. I have had to that on two of my boats.

Yeah. That's the only reason I could come up with for one as well...and maybe to throw a couple of diesel inner-tubes up there for some bouyancy.
I'll ask Lee about it tomorrow.

Innertubes? Sounds like you think it may take on water. That is what the big bilge pump is for. Are you running a splash shield?

I don't want to run a splash shield but you never know. I'm riding the fence on that one. As far as taking on water is concerned, I am a Delight...water will find its way in inevitably!! I'd rather run the inner-tubes under the deck than putting that expanding foam junk under there. Maybe a little redneck but effective yet easy to get out. :D

Looks much better with no splash shield. the inner tubes are not a bad idea. You can even take them out and pull the boys around with them. My old cracker box had nylon bags filled with packing foam pices in them to help if it ever stated to sink.

If the bow is sealed, then there is no need for anything in there, redneck or not. I like the idea of sealing it. But if it isn't airtight, then the hole should certainly be there. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I spoke with Lee and there will be an access hole in the bulkead. #1 Access to the bow-eye. #2 It will allow the guys at Schiada to get some fiberglass reinforcement behind on the backside of the bulkhead.

Once it's finished, I can get the Old Man  to fab up an aluminum plate to seal up the opening. Don't hollar at me Pop!! :D

I'm so impatient with this crap...I want it back so i can feel like I'm doing something with it!! I know Lee and his crew are doing a great job with it so I'll just bite my tongue and shut the hell up :blah:. I'm hoping that on it's return to glory voyage, I'll be able to cruise to RDP's place to get a shirt!!
