Its a personal choice brother.....

I know that with a little one I wouldn't even consider commuting on a bike these days. Its just too risky with all of the knuckleheads on the street.

If youre talking a toy to ride on sunny days thats a tad different but as you know shit happens.

Your lil ones would like to see you.....all of you ..in one piece ...till they are in their 20's....you got lucky, once....Take a deep breath, go machine something pretty....and realize the world is a dangerous place...and your family needs you around....or...Buy a huge insurance policy, and have at it....:p

X2 on what Cole Trickle & JBB said. The reality of it all is the responsibility to your little ones.

Nowhere near the same scenario, but after 12 broken bones, I had to give up motocross. I miss it like no other but I have a reasonable responsibility to my kids and the company I work for.

You can't control other peoples driving abilities therefore the street deal has a whole different level of risk.

Not a Buell guy, but thanks PV.

It will likely be a Duck, or a Honda 1000RR.

As soon as I can I will be changing the LI policy, can't do it now for the medical reasons, as I am still a risk. This was always the plan. It was in motion before the accident and wasn't completed.

I know motorcycles come with an inherent risk, I have ridden long enough to know better. If this accident was in a car, I don't think I would swear off cars and walk to work in the rain.

I see you're in So. Cal.
if commuting, I'd vote no. After picking up a fellow officer off the 5 fwy. awhile back, his Sgt. said something that rings true: (he and I ride/rode HD's on weekends) "With texting, EVERYONE is a drunk driver, in regards to coming into a biker's line of travel". Too many odds against commuters on the freeways. I think 5 LAPD cops have been hit/and or killed in last year, all off duty commuters, not bike cops.

As for days off riding, you most likely know fed statistics put chances of a fatal bike accident at 200%(!) greater on a Sat. night after midnight than during daytime hours of said day.

Best of luck in your decision.

Sorry Brian, but after what you went through, I'd be a bit scared to get on a bike.

Idk the situation behind ur accident but I see no problem in u gettin back on the horse. Just slow down and watch out a lil more. You can die in or on anything. Look at tanks mom and her non deployed air bags. If ur number is up then its up. You owe it to ur kids to stay alive sure. But I dont think u have to sacrifice things you love. Just stay out of the canyons and just ride.

Not necessarily a commuter, my shop is a few miles from my house.

I mainly rode it on select sunny days and in the mountains when I had 5 min to spare. I haven't been on a bike after 10PM in years as I retired it from trolling for tail well before I got married..:)

If the spouse is cool with it, then go for it. I only rode slow big HD's, that new Ducati is sweet, and I'd have 0 chance of not riding way over my head:D

Hence the friction.

I agree 100%. I've been down myself only 65 mph at the 5 frwy 22 interchange. Wetback driver at fault no insurance. I got back on the bike 4 months later a near miss by an out of control driver near the 405 and 22 interchange. He hit a pole and ended up in the ice plants that poor bastard. I decided right there to sell the bike and my # 1 reason, I didn't want to have this life end because of someone else's wrecklessness or mistake. Miss bikes you bet but never again in this state...

I am well known to be asleep before midnight, even on new years eve.

But those numbers make sense and are pretty frightening.

It is just tough to hang it up. None of us are getting out of this life alive. It just becomes, when.

Sound like a "shop vehicle"purchase is order. I'm thinking "special construction" on reg. can mean "old pickup" to the wife:D

seriously, tough one to get over if wife is against it.

I'd be pretty leery about jumping back on the bike after a serious accident, but if you feel like you are ready to pursue it, have at it. Please be careful Brian. :)

I was involved in a pretty good accident about 15 years ago. It was in downtown L.A. right at the exit for the convention center. Staples center was still being built. I hit the center divider head on and wrecked my truck. Up until 2 years ago, I wouldn't drive by myself near that exit. I relive it every time I see the divider.

I still get sweaty palms when I exit there and within 2 miles of the exit.

Good idea, not a lot of cargo for deliveries, but I sure do show up quickly. :)

My first motorcycle accident was motorcycle vs semi. Riding from San Bernardino to Devore on the back road, semi made a left hand turn in front of me, no where to go but in to the semi! I have had a bunch of different bikes since, ride a HD Ultra Classic now. No way will I give up ridding. I quit for a while, but the urge to ride led me back! I lived for a while up in Wrightwood, talk about some fun canyon carving:thumbup:

Harleys have never been my speed. I like that they are American made, but they are no sportbike.

Wife has been on the back exactly one time. She was OK with it, but I never pushed her to ride after that, and she didn't ask.

The new one will sport a solo tail section.

I've been riding since I was 4. On the street for a long time. Had a couple of spills, but thankfully never any contact with any vehicles. Last one was 2000. Hit a diesel fuel leak around a turn on my Busa and got thrown into the guard rail with the bike nailing me good. Was a good eye opener because the kids were still young. So, I gave up the streets and stayed with dirt (quads). Fast forward to 2013 (about 8 months ago) I ran across a bike that I could commute to LAX on sunny days and ride around. I bought it for cheap. It's a little older, but in good condition. I try to be very careful, but a lot of stuff happens.

Maybe thats the answer? Get on the hog and slow down a bit. It will force you to slow down actually. U still get to ride. ;)

I got that.

Just not the same, grew up on bikes been riding since I was 7 or so, bought a road bike at 22 and never looked back. Put about 70K miles on two bikes and most of those miles were leaned over.

Some of the best ridding on the planet. Bought my first street bike at 18 when I lived up there. Man I miss it! Ear to ear grin all the way down and all the way back up

My mom still lives in Pinion Hills, every time I visit and look up at the mountain I get the urge to trade the Harley in on a Ducati........

There is nothing like hanging off the seat going through a corner to feel the front start to carry as you transition coming out of the turn.

I wouldn't say that, what I want to do and what I really do are two different things.

I have half of that, need to get the other half.

I had bikes since the 1960's. Few close calls and a real one in 1975 on my Guzzi. Double compounf fracture, 3 months in a cast. Old bitch pulling out from a stop sign front of me. It didn't deter me from riding though. Last fast bike I owned was a 1986 Honda 750 VFR Interceptor. Had that bike to 150 many times and lived. When my son was born in 1989, sold the bike for 3K and bought new bedroom furniture with the money:rolleyes:D. Did restore my 58 Matchless [ still have it ] so I could still drive like a grandpa in a much safer manner:) Did ride some fast bikes occasionally, owned by friends, one is my favorite the Ducati 1098S.:thumbsup Hard to resist not getting another superbike though.

While I appreciate your desire to ride, it's just not for me.
I had a HD for awhile. A good friend owns a dealership, so he hooked me up.
I tried it for awhile, and just never felt comfortable.
A sport bike? not a chance. I know me - I wouldn't last three months.

You have me mistaken for someone else, I'm in management, we have drivers and co-drivers for that stuff. If riding bikes is your true passion in life, go buy one and do some track days in a controlled environment. If something goes worng then its your own damn fault, you either ran out of talent or did not have a properly maintained equipment. My point is you don't have to look out for Juanita pulling into Walmart:D And like JBB said, bump the life insurance limits to the moon. You may not be there to walk her down the isle, but that doesnt mean paying those policy premiums shows you didn't care:thumbsup

I don't trust idiots on the street. Seen too much carnage. Dirt bikes are a way to get your 2-wheel fix and not have to worry too much about drunks and texters. If you ride with a group (join a club or forum) you will make new friends and have a blast. I suggest not riding alone, ever. I stay away from the crowds and love to ride the remote areas with a group of buddies. Single track is my obsession rather than moto-tracks, open desert, or jeep roads. Much more safe than street riding and more fun in my opinion.
