My oldest daughter got an iPhone for Christmas. She takes very good care of everything she has (she treats everything as if he saved and bought them with her own money)

Today after school, she was texting and her friend were horsing around off to the side. One of them fell into my daughter knocking her phone out of her hand and shattered the screen...even with the case. She was very upset.

I found out the insurance deductible through Verizon is $175. I have 2 questions:

1) I have been told that sometimes the Apple Store will replace the screen for free (one time only). Does anyone have any experience with that?

2) I have always told my daughter that if she breaks it, she will have to pay to get it repaired, exchanged, or whatever. This wasn't her fault, but at the same time I don't want her to grow up thinking all she has to do is run to Mom & Dad with tears in her eyes to get us to bail her out her whole life. What are your opinions / ideas?

Thanks in Advance!!

Go to the Apple store and get a "warranty replacement" phone... $149.00 and you walk out of the store with the replacement phone... no waiting for shipping or anything... simple as that but either way it's gonna cost some $$$...

Make sure you sync the phone before you take it into the store...

We found a few stores that will replace the glass on the 4s for about $100. My wife dropped hers the day after she got it....... Check your local mall for IPhone repair. I'm with you on taking care of the girl.....

Have her pay 1/2... smart phones are not a "Right" for kids these days. You can pay for it now but make her pay it back or work it off. Teach her the value of a $

Sounds to me like she understands what it takes to buy nice things. It was an accident. I'd give her a break on this one and get her a new one. If it happens again (which I'll bet it won't), its on her. ---Signed a fellow Daddy's Girl :D

Get an HTC. My daughter was carrying some stuff down the stairs yesterday with phone in hand. Half way down phone slipped (HTC Rezound 4G), juggled a few times, and flew 12 feet through the air onto the tile. Not a scratch. I've dropped my HTC on the tile and on the patio slab a few times. So far, these are tough phones. Other than that, screw Verizon's insurance, its a rip. Get a refurb phone and be done with it.:thumbsup

Thanks for all the great input everyone. I was thinking she shouldn't have to pay for it, but wanted to make sure I wasn't being too soft on her.

Shintoooo, I think I will opt to get it fixed. It really looks simple to disassemble, but that is like 30 tiny screws. I don't think I want to disassemble the entire phone. Thanks anyways.

First call an Apple store and see if they will help you out.
If not, Call apple and get the apple care plus coverage, it cost about 90.00 and it extends the apple warranty to 2 years. It covers breaks, water damage and anything else for $50.00, it does not cover loss of phone.
For $140.00, your phone is fixed and now you have a extended warranty.
Good Luck

Rogerthat99 - Quick question; That $175 deductible is with insurance? If so, then dang, might have to re-think the $10 a month charge.

------------

We had a scare too, wife dropped it, daughter dropped it and it's only 2 weeks old.

There are people on Craigslist who advertise that they change out the glass. I think I had someone tell me they had it done for 30 bucks one time.

The insurance deductible on our android phones is around $75, I had no idea that the iPhone is $169 (a sales person in the store told me that, i haven't confirmed with Verizon customer service). What a rip off!!

Yup. I was in a local Starbucks a couple months back and there was a guy that was repairing one and had 3 customers waiting in line to have their IPhone glass replaced. He charged $40 and took all of 5 minutes tops.

I asked how people were getting hold of him, he said Craigslist. He also told me that business was good, he was replacing about 5 a day...

You can also change the color from white or black to any color even clear. You can find the glass all over eBay. A broken iPhone 4 fetches $250 on eBay and a 4s about $350.

RT... with all this farting around you could have had this fixed by now. :p:D

I usually have this fixed during my lunch hour. There is a guy on San Bruno Ave in San Francisco that does them for $50. (cash only :p) Works like a charm. :thumbsup

Kind of a rough neighborhood so don't look at the locals directly in the eye and you should be OK. :D

Most small shops will replace the Screen for under $100. Just craiglist iphone repair in your area. I prefer to visit a brick and mortar shop, but have had friends get theirs repaired at home offices.

Plus you have your new luxury yacht to put gas in (The Grizz) :D Nice boat by the way.

I have an appointment at the Apple Store this evening...I will see if they will fix it and if not hit up one of the third parties.

That sux. :thumbsdown Sorry to hear it Ty. :( Now that you mention it, gas prices have been a bit high lately. :grumble:

But you know, somehow this is all your boy O's fault right.:p

I got an idea. Just sell Brown a couple more old Optima batteries for his fleet of junk. That should net you some cash and get you fixed up pronto.:thumbsup:p

really simple to do my son does them himself. You do need the special screwdriver bit to get them off though.(2.50 on ebay). teach her how to do it and she can start replacing all her friend for some side cash.
