Rabbit is a traditional Christmas side dish in my Italian family - they are hard to find - I paid $10/lb this year and they were frozen. 2 rabbits were just over $60

I might have to start raising Rabbits again. In the late 70s-mid 80s I would get .40-.50 lb. live weight, the processor was getting 1.50-2.00 lb.
We would have anywhere between 250-300 rabbits at a time. We had several breeds for show, meat and wool. Angoras were plucked and spun the wool, other breeds were shown, those that weren't show quality were either butchered for the freezer or sold at the processor in El Monte. Also produced about 150 an month for Lab Research.
On second thought, even at $10 lb. I have better things to do now.

We used to buy a box of 6 fresh rabbits - never frozen from El Monte Rabbits. Then the owner got old and his heirs didn't carry the business on. That was it for fresh rabbit in So Cal.

On second thought, even at $10 lb. I have better things to do now.

I suppose most rabbit farms think that way too. One year I was able to find some frozen at Stater Bros - I did not see until I got them home that they were from CHINA! I didn't say anything and hoped they were in fact rabbits. This year's were from Canada.

Had a southern good ol' boy that used to work for me. One of his past employers would trap cats in the neighborhood for a few weeks then have a sale on rabbits. No joke.

GEM meats in Fullerton usually has frozen rabbit I plan on smoking one at some point.

That’s where I got them last year. $10/lb. He got them in late this year. I was there last week and he had a new batch in. I went to Hottingers in Chino this year for Christmas-I think they had been frozen longer than I like.

Both places weigh the plastic wrapping at $10/lb unless you point it out. Legally they have to have a tare.
