The World’s Best Bourbon—According To The 2023 Bartender Spirits Award

Liquor store shelves are awash in options these days. Especially when it comes to bourbon. According to the Distilled Spirits Council, US whiskey sales have swelled some 133% over the past twenty years. The biggest driver of that success has been the super premium segment: bottles which retail for $40 and up. With so much choice—and such a significant outlay of cash hanging in the balance—consumers are increasingly thirsty for the advice of experts. And there’s perhaps no single figure in the industry as trusted as the bartender: the original booze influencer.

It makes sense, then, that the Bartender Spirits Awards has emerged as one of the most important annual competitions to watch. Originally launched in 2019, the judging consists of a panel of more than two dozen respected drink makers from across the globe.

According to its website, the “aim of the spirits competition is to provide independent and honest reviews for brands targeting the U.S. bar trade.” Nevertheless, the takeaways are vitally relevant for at-home consumers. Because these judges aren’t just evaluating products based upon fixability in a cocktail. They’re considering the merits of any liquid based upon its overall taste—including balance and versatility—as well as its perceived value.

In 2023 the competition evaluated over 1400 submissions, with the biggest glut of entries flooding into whiskey, vodka, gin and RTD categories. And from all that, the judges held one whiskey higher than all the rest: Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond. The 7-year-old bourbon is distilled from a high corn mashbill, meaning that it will tickle your sweet tooth with broad brushstrokes of butterscotch, vanilla, and honey. Remember, a bourbon only needs to be made with 51% or more corn as part of its grain recipe. This one relies on 78%, along with 12% malted barley and 10% rye.

The namesake distillery behind the whiskey is a Kentucky icon. Heaven Hill has been producing world-renowned spirit in the Bluegrass State since 1935. This particular release harkens back to that founding era, when the most trusted liquid on shelves had to be bear Bottled-in-Bond on the label. The designation was set forth by an act of Congress back in 1897, instituting federal oversight to ensure that such whiskies were aged for a minimum of four years, held at a single distillery that entire time, and bottled at an exacting 100 proof.
But the real proof is in the pudding, as they say. An apt analogy here as Heaven Hill’s award-winning offering is a dessert-worthy pour. Discerning palates will also detect a hint of tobacco leaf in the finish, enhancing the complexity of a bourbon which drinks well above its weight class at an average retail price of just $45 .
Stay-at-home bartenders will have an easy time understanding why this one appeals so strongly to their professional counterparts. It works exceptionally well in a classic Old Fashioned preparation. It’s also readily available on shelves. Which is its own form of sweet relief in this era of painfully-allocated luxury bourbons.
The Bartender Spirits Awards will reconvene in Chicago later this spring and announcing a new crop of winners on June 20th. We’ll keep you updated on that, of course. But in the meantime you can view their complete list of 2023 winners—across all categories—here.

Heaven Hill Distillery like I have mentioned is one of my favorite. The grounds are beautiful, but Buffalo Trace is more epic.

The bottles shown was our tasting samples .

Smart Time Liquor
He‘s not the most economically priced store, but he has a pretty decent selection. I get in on his holiday grab bags. It’s usually $100-200 and you’re guaranteed to get at least your money back and then there’s a few bags that are winners. I scored a bottle of Old Elk 8 year wheated bourbon and a bottle of Larceny on the last one I bought in on. I wouldn’t have bought the Old Elk normally but was pleasantly surprised by it. He is Located in Grand Terrace.

@Done-it-again, looks like we’re going to get the 10 year Van Winkle. We also picked up a bottle of Elmer T Lee single barrel. Have you had this? From the descriptions I’ve read, it sounds pretty solid.
View attachment 1320393
Wow nice score. I’ve had Elmer T and it’s a bottle that I’ve wanted for a long time, but haven’t been lucky to buy it retail or close to it.

I had it in a restaurant and I didn’t think it was that good. But honestly who knows what was really in the bottle. The bottle was pretty much empty when I asked for the pour. Not worth the 35-40 for it. I’ve haven’t had it since and that’s been 3 or so years ago.

Enjoy!

Very pleasant sweet nose, caramel or maybe butterscotch. Taste it on the tongue as well but with some spice, lot of flavor. Finish sticks with you a bit, a little heat on the lips/ tongue, nice!

Smoother than other 100+ proofs.

Will definitely keep one on hand.

Hell yea. It’s great for $45ish, always keep a bottle or 2 on hand. It’s also a great bottle to bring to invited gatherings.

You need to one of these for those Blanton corks.

Thanks, my wife and I were just talking about what to do with them. We usually buy one on our anniversary and New Year… still need the last N:

I get all of my higher end bourbon from Pavilions in Newport Beach. They tend to carry some of the hard to find products more frequently (Blantons, EH Taylor, Eagle Rare etc) and sell everything at retail pricing.
By the Port Streets?

That one was tough to find, but I finally got it last year. Now I need to get the holder that was posted above, but I have some of them in TN and some in FL. Dammit first world problems. LOL

I may need to take a road trip to find some blantons....local store said if they get it he will sell it to me for 149 which is hard to stomach since I know some of you are paying half that...I'm not above driving to tennessee or kentucky or whatever for a bourbon run hahaha. Hell I'm only 8ish hours from nashville so might as well make a weekend out of it!

Haven't tried them yet so can't give a review but I picked these up from that store the other day...I'm sure I overpaid but is what it is...think the jefferson's was like 70 and the EC I believe was 25 if I remember right...bought a bunch of other stuff so can't remember exactly lol...Excited to try them!

I might have the N: as I had was 3 or 4 of them. I'll check this evening.

I had exchanged a N: bottle for a N with the local Flemings so I could finish my full set.

Each Blanton’s cork has a letter engraved to spell out BLANTON:S (with two different N’s).

Each stopper starting at B shows the horse in a different position throughout it’s running stride.
I guess I need to start looking at these bottles. Still learning something new every day.

This is the complete full set on the bottom shelf. Still have another set that I’m drinking to turn in the stoppers.

Each stopper will have a letter on the left side towards the rear foot of the horse.

Happy hunting!!!!!

Not sure where you are driving from, but this is where I get Blantons. It is about 2 hours from Nashville in West Tennessee.

Paris is 7 hours from my house....I would make that drive on a weekend to get a few bottles...Thanks for the tip!

I should have mentioned a couple of things.

Call ahead to make sure they have some before you drive that far.

They limit you to 1 bottle at a time, so take someone with you to buy a second bottle.

They have another location not far from the one I told you about. The other one is at 1060 Mineral Wells Ave, Paris, TN 38242. After you get 2 bottles at one, then go to the other and get 2 more. They usually have a display of Blantons, ER, Col Taylor, Wellers and Buffalo Trace.

Hopefully, they have that many on hand when you go. I use to know what day they get their deliveries each month, but don't remember. They may tell you over the phone if you ask. Really nice people.

Costco in Nashville told me the 5th of each month they sell some higher end liquor. He said they usually get a few Blantons, but I have never gone there to verify what he said.

Here’s another option for picking up the elusive Blantons if you happen to have a cruise booked in the near future. My brother in law was recently on an RCL cruise ship and picked up 6 bottles (one has fortunately landed in my bar👍). They were selling them for $85 a piece!😳

Do you fly overseas? Some duty free shops sell them. Only allowed 2 bottles and you need to pack them in a suitcase coming back.

How are you drinking your bourbon? So far I have been putting everything on the rocks or if its crappy just adding it to water. My family calls it dirty water and the kids have learned never drink Dads water.

I'm reading the good stuff should be neat. May be intense but that is the way you really take in the flavors and aromas.

Am I doing it right?

I drink bourbon 98% neat, even the hotter stuff @ 130+ proof stuff.

But there is no wrong way to drink it. My father mixes his with ginger ale 98% of the time. All type of bourbon, even the expensive ones.

You will be surprised how much the flavors change by adding a drop of water. Take a your fist sip neat to get your pallet in the mood (and get the Kentucky hug) then go for another sip, this 2nd sip will be where you taste the most flavor. Then add a drop of water or a large ice cube (small cubes melt to fast) then taste again. You will notice the difference.

My rule is if it more than 100 proof I drink it on the rocks. If under I usually drink it neat.

So I have never really been a fan of liquor stores and after a few calls I'm still not. I called a few local this week just to see if any of them had any Blantons or Heaven Hill and I wanted to know the price before I drove around. Couldn't even get the 3 I called to tell me if they had either. The consensus answer to the do you have question was we have a lot of bourbon. Feel free to come in and look. Hmmm, no thanks.

Buddy brought me a bottle today, and it's great. Very hard to find Trace here in the Emerald Coast of FL, somehow he found 2 bottles of Traveller though.

From their website: For this first-of-its-kind collaboration from Buffalo Trace Distillery, Traveller brings together the collective artistry of 8X Grammy Award-Winning Artist Chris Stapleton and Buffalo Trace Distillery Master Distiller, Harlen Wheatley.

In pursuit of the finest possible whiskey, over 50 blends were sampled before making Blend No. 40 the chosen combination. Blend No. 40 is the carefully curated result of countless hours of testing & tasting and is exactly what you’d expect – a premium whiskey that speaks for itself.

Authentically crafted to be there whenever you find yourself in good company, Traveller Whiskey is Easy to Drink, Hard Not to Love.

Complex aromas of vanilla, aged fruit and buttery shortbread rounded off by caramel and a touch of oak. The palate has just a touch of sweetness, followed by spice, toasted nut and oak flavors, with a robust finish.

My wife bought me 2 Buffalo Trace, a Mitcher's and an Old Grand Dad bourbon today.

Buffalo Trace isn't my favorite after the first pour but it will disappear.

Have had no luck finding Heaven Hill yet but did find a Blantons at $250 and said no thanks.

Was that an original Blanton’s? Or straight from the barrel, or a gold ?

Looks like I will be looking for some Travelers. What is the price point?

On edit. Looks like $41.99 but I can have it delivered for $60. Is it worth it. I see that it is 45 proof.

A while back someone posted about a newly imported bourbon from, I think Scotland? Maybe Ireland, that was pretty good. Now I can't find that post. Anyone remember what the bourbon name was? Or link to that thread?
