More bars, more people, more boats, have there been more accidents? I haven't really heard of an increase of accidents or fatalities on that part of the river. The hit and run Fountain and the boat the hit the bridge were pre Pirates cove.

Since all the boats are going north are there less accidents towards the Springs?

In this economy with the least amount of new boats being built in years, I can't imagine there are more people on the water than there were 5 years ago.

It is just a matter of time. My point about more boats and people is specifically pointed at PC. Not the river in general.

One dead, eight hurt in boat crash
Injured include one critical after vessel slams into Colo. River jetty

By JAYNE HANSON
Monday, June 27, 2011 10:32 PM MST

The first fatal boat wreck of the 2011 boating season occurred late Sunday night on the Colorado River and claimed the life of 21-year-old Brittany Stark, of Canyon County, Calif., said Sgt. Tim Smith, of the San Bernardino County Sheriff?s Department.

The collision occurred about 11 p.m. Sunday on the Parker Strip, near Bass Point located below Emerald Cove, Smith said.

An unidentified boat operator, of California, was traveling southbound in a 21-foot wake board boat on the Colorado River about 30 to 35 mph when the vessel struck a rock jetty slightly offshore and south of Emerald Cove.

Smith said there were ?numerous eyewitnesses? who observed the impact.

In all, there were nine passengers. Four were transported by air to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, two were transported to La Paz Regional Hospital ? one was pronounced dead and the other treated and released. The remaining three passengers were treated and released at the scene, Smith said.

?Injuries ranged from minor to fatal,? Smith said. ?Of the four total (who were air-evacuated to Phoenix), one remains in critical condition.?

It is unknown if alcohol was a factor, and the crash remains under investigation.

?I don?t think any of the people on board last night were wearing life jackets,? Smith said. ?They were operating in the dark, with no moon.?

Smith said the accident parallels the drowning Saturday just off the California shore, directly across from Site Six, in Havasu, when an 83-year-old man jumped from a pontoon boat to cool himself and never resurfaced. Like the nine passengers, the man wasn?t wearing a lifejacket.

?It?s so easy to wear a lifejacket, and they are so comfortable now, there is no reason not to wear one,? Smith said.

How is your daughter doing RR?
Have you been able to get any info on the other passengers? (pm me if you are more comfortable with that)
I hate to say it but we may know more of the kids involved in this.:(

We are hopefully going to be up and running this weekend. I pray this doesn't happen again. Anyone up for putting some lights up on those hard turns?

Doing so would open you up to alot of liability. this has been discussed before and boatcop had stated the reason the city/town/state/county have not done that is the liability involved due to a failure. It would have to be done without anyone knowing or witnessing it was done ;)

It is just a matter of time. My point about more boats and people is specifically pointed at PC. Not the river in general.

Maybe i'm reading the threads different but i've hung around all 4 parts of the river. Parker, Havasu, Sandbar and PC. Compare all the videos on holiday weekends and PC is probably has the least amount of the idiots on the river. It may be because of all the cops. Left PC cove early to get to the Needles boat ramp early on Memorial Week Saturday before it got to crowded. Up river about 1/2 mile, 3 boat cops just waiting up river for people to leave, probably the same down river from PC. Now i'm not saying this is right but might get people thinking.
Now my wife when she's packing the cooler for all of us knows, when i'm driving 3 Monsters, alot of water and some diet Dr. Pepper for me, no alcohol. For the rest of my friends, they can drink all they want. In the boat, car or my bike, i wouldn't give a cop the satisfaction of giving me a bui or dui. Insurance is high enough as it is.
One day on Memorial went to Lake Mojave, showed my boaters safety card to the guy in the booth, he started laughing, never seen one, called his partner over from the other booth to show him what the card looked liked and he has never seen one. Got the boat in for free but had to pay for the suburban, told him i wasn't putting the suburban in the water we had a good laugh about it, had to pay $10.00.
Anybody else have a safety card? If not, go to the coast guard website and i believe you can take a practice test. Real eye opener.

You shouldnt make assumptions like that with out having facts. Pure speculation

I spent my childhood directly across from Sundance. That sucker spun the meter for sure.

What parker needs are street lights. All along the river.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Or just let Darwin weed the impaired out of the mix but the innocent always suffer. No win deal all the way around.

We absoutly love our night time boat rides. For me its the topping on a great day. Always just on plane, never faster.

Down in Parker, wait till the Pirates Den opens, all the other bars might as well shut the doors. Look what happened to Topak. Too little too late.

Talking to a local that owns one of the largest storage facilities on the river. We were talking about all the shallow parts that are appearing on the river that are creating a problem for boaters. He says do you know what the river is for? Irrigation for all of the farmers and live stock. That's it. No if ands or buts. Who ever is in charge of the river doesn't care if you pitch a tent in a camp ground, pull a motor home, or live in a 5 million dollar home on the river, we're dead last on this food chain. They aren't goin' to do a friggin' thing, don't like it, leave.
I know, what about the revenue? They'll just charge more money for the irrigation and all the food will just go up. Like a domino effect.
You want to put lights up on the river like the 405 freeway, good luck with that.

Spend a bit more time in the PC area and you will see plenty of idiots driving drunk especially on Saturdays or a holiday weekend....Visit on a holiday weekend and you will see over 500 boats in the channel with the majority drinking (I would say at least 75% of the people)...hang out and watch these idiots trying to go 3 boats wide down the channel to get to PC or out and you will see the real damage waiting to happen...

Redundancy is what is needed to maintain illumination, it?s been done for several years without failure.

How could the City, County or State be Liable for Navigation Lights, there are several Jettys and Bouys with beacons on them floating around the ocean, and several Vessels running into them on several occasions, I've never heard of any legal action taken by people running into them. People need to take responsiblity for there own actions, any lighting would be a plus in some areas IMO.

The reason Parker is great is it sorts out the boneheads pretty quick. They show up on the big weekends once and mess up there boats, get there ass kicked at the bar, get banged a $600 for an aluminum prop at the local highway robbers joint, $250 for a battery (city slicker price) chances are good there chick will runoff with a local tailhunter and on and on. They dont come back:D

If they put one up they would then need to put something on every hazard and maintain them, slippery slope

I disagree. Most parts of the strip are lit up, but there are areas that get pitch black when there is no moon out. Most people who know the river well, navigate around these danger zones. People will still crash, but that might be one less factor when drivers are speeding and not paying attention. That emerald corner is infamous for taking lives.

Lets face the reality of the river. New groups of people come to the river and see boats driving at night. They believe they can navigate the river with no issues. Then then hit a dark part of the strip and BAM, there up on the rocks. If there is a light on the emerald corner, sundance rock, rock pile, Bluewater bouys (just because they are hard to see) the river might be a little safer for new people boating on Parker.

I don't really give a damn about the lights. I just do not want some dip shit reporter writing about "If they wore life jackets they might have lived" bullshit. This is going to effect all of us if morons keep crashing

Note the three roll eyes faces after the comment.

No, I don't want street lights. It was a facetious comment.

How would it not work? Parker has needed an "above board" taxi service for way too long.

I agree. Guess I should have been a little clearer. What I meant was, What are the hours of operation? How many people will you taxi at once? Are we able to bring our drinks when we board? Is there specific times you will be picking up people from say like "River Land" or "Echo"? Just general questions like these:D, I'm not questioning your business model.. :thumbsup

I think a water taxi is a great idea.

Regarding the recent crashes, I don't understand anyone driving faster than they can see and stop. A dark night with no moon, unless you really know the river and you're at idle speed, it just makes no sense.

This latest crash is really sad.....all those young people hurt, one dead and one in critical condition.....really sad.

We agree, very sad I had to catch my breath because our friends were out there last weekend and they have a wake board boat as well... Still think it sucks there are no lights on the major turns on the river...

My daughter was friends with the young woman from Santa Clarita that died in the accident.:(

Will be down there in July to visit the site and let her say a few words, spread some flowers on the water, say goodbye.

Bad things happen to good people... unfortunate and tragic. Just have to be careful when you are out having fun with your friends.
