Looking into some of the better products out there to secure my enclosed trailer from theft.

Aside from a high quality hitch lock with a good puck lock, cable thru wheels, boot, etc - does anyone have a great way to prevent trailer theft?

Don’t say take the wheels off…. 😂

I don’t have much other Ideas then the ones you mentioned . one thing that I always wanted to do is have a plate embedded into the concrete below trailer with a D-ring to allow a chain and lock too.

I seen pictures from someone that done it on his driveway and always thought that was a great idea. Just going to keep honest people honest though with any system really ,unfortunately.

Along with securing the tongue I have put cable locks around the rims. Again, only a deterrent

Like my brother told me, locks keep honest people honest

On a jobsite, I saw a yellow box deal, encased the whole ball mount deal. It used the puck type locks. So far, that's about the best I've seen.
Big dogs work too, but only if you store the trailer at your house.

How big and heavy?

This was what I was thinking. If they can’t tow it, they can’t steal it. That’s why I asked about size and weight.

Only problem with puck locks is if you know where to cut them it is like a 30 second deal with a cordless grinder had a mobile mini container on a job site lost the key to the puck lock they came to job site and with cordless grinder cut on lock 30 seconds lock fell off

Change it to a pintle hook. Not kidding. Very easy to get the style that unbolts and leaves the tongue blank. Plus most thieves probably won’t be set up for a pintle hook.

@Bigbore500r this is what WTR&PWR is talking about, 4 grade 8 nuts and bolts and take it off when parked

A lock is just a deterrent, a lock is only as strong as the Harbor Freight battery powered side cutter…so as much as you can to make it inconvenient

So what’s your idea 😂

But if you watch social media, they seem to have created the solution, they just take the whole truck and trailer.

My family is not in it so thats why i am properly insured . If nickle and dime stuff does not get it done , insurance will pay me out .

I would put a 7 pin plug on the trailer side. Just like how there is a 7 pin plug on the truck side. So you can remove the cable between the truck and trailer. It doesn't prevent theft but if there is no cable to plug into the truck the lights don't work. No working lights are more likely to get pulled over by a police officer. Just make sure the trailer is reported stolen.

With anything, they're all just deterrents. If a trailer is a "mark", and contents known, it can be hauled out. Just like repossesing cars and equipment, if the driver knows the target, they'll come prepped.

Last year one of the tree trimming companies got hit hard. They emptied out their equipment container, and used one of the two trucks stolen to drive out the gate. Whoever it was wasn't local, bit knew someone that had worked there, would be my guess.

I had a fun idea...

Stow a length of stout chain / that attached very solidly to the inside of the frame up near the front of the trailer...longer the better. If you're parking it on your own property in the same spot every time....cut out the concrete and pour yourself a 16" deep footing with a low profile hook in it...sort of like an arresting hook on an aircraft carrier. Use some 100 test fishing line (hard to see at night) from the chain to another anchor point so when the trailer starts moving, it drags the chain off the little shelf under the trailer where you have it stowed so the chain lands behind the hook... Ideally they'll get up to 15mph or so before the chain hits the hook, stops the whole rig in its tracks, very likely breaking the back half of the truck off and also very likely triggering the air bags. Trailer will probably be totaled but it would be well worth it. Truck occupants will probably be a bit fucked up too.

That’s why I don’t leave materials on jobs in containers it is a pain to haul wire and controls in trucks to and from jobs but no one loses it

If you're sacrificing the trailer, load for bear;)

If you go the chain/cable route, check out Pewag hardened square chain. There’s another company too. Let me know what you think.

A boot or two is probably the best thing, as long as the lock device isn't easily compromised. Anything on the hitch is going to be easily defeated.

Hydraulically operated retracting vertical steel security posts in front of trailer, or removable and lockable ones commonly used to close off pathways to vehicles, but there again are those locks that can be cut, maybe install locks below grade under some kind of security manhole.

As was said most locks and chains just keep out honest thieves. You could always put an Apple air tag on it that was posted recently.

Take the wheel(s) off one side of the trailer and leave it on a jackstand. The thieves won’t have the correct bolt pattern if they happen to have a spare wheel with them.

Where is the trailer being stored that you worry about theft?

Cable through wheels is useless. I did that to my boat years ago forgot to remove it when moving it and didn’t even feel it. I noticed when I parked in street and cable was dragging.

Hitch lock and boot be my choices.
