A TT in contingency decides to hotrod a little and kills 2

I was there. Hard to tell if he was hot rodding, throttle stuck, or he panicked and hit the skinny pedal rather than the brake.

I was standing next to that TT 30 seconds prior to the incident.

I didn’t see anyone dead. Worse injury was the guy who got pinned between the trophy truck and the car in front. His hand was nearly severed from what I could tell and he was in agonizing pain.

Where did you hear two people were killed?

It could’ve been a lot worse with the thousands of people around. I just didn’t see anyone that had died. Doesn’t mean they didn’t later. It was a sad deal for sure. Trophy truck was impounded and driver taken to jail.

Was chaos with all the police and people injured. Thankful my friends and family were all okay. Feel terrible for those injured. The one who got stuck between the trophy truck and car was injured badly. Looked like his hand was severed.

Laying around resting in our VRBO for the Baja 1000 start and turned on the news. It’s all in Spanish and although It’s not my first language they’re talking about the incident all over the news and saying potentially two deaths like @beerrun mentioned. If accurate that’s incredibly sad. The vibe was amazing until it wasn’t.

Yes. That's not going to go over well at all.
There's only so much influence the race organizers can have on getting him out
Best scenario is get a large amount of cash down there asap.and start paying off the right people.
Bad deal.

Seems malfunction to me. The blurp of the throttle doesn't sound like a 'listen to me' sounded loaded it. He may have been trying to clear it and spaced out he was in drive.
Then no reverse? Maybe after he jumped out he realized and pushed wheel back. He did grab his cell right away. That was a oh fuck moment

… I could be wrong… But it sounded to me like an intentional throttle bip… And then he just didn’t know what to do🤷🏽‍♀️… Like lock up the brakes???… If two died, it is completely tragic…

The guy on the ground between the truck and buggy looks like the hand injury. The 2 guys between the next two buggies do not look good. 🙏

That truck could be fly by wire.....electronic throttle malfunction? He sure seemed to be being cautious leading up to the incident.
drive-by-wire systems, even the aftermarket ones, default to the closed throttle position when there is an issue with the pedal, voltage, or throttle body. it sounded like he just was revving the engine and forgot the truck was in drive.

Obviously that isn’t the driver of the truck in the actual race.. is he just some helper that drives it through contingency?

Either way he’s completely screwed now..

Correct, was just part of the pit crew from what I read online.

Holy shit. Either throttle got stuck or dude panicked. Either way he had no business driving that way even if it was a quick stab of the throttle.

They don't fail like that, cable throttles have way more issues sticking.

Most of those trophy trucks are not DBW for what it's worth, many running ITB setups. Not sure about this one in particular, but that is the norm from what i have seen, Which always made me scratch my head, as the DBW is such a superior setup from an engine management and reliability standpoint

DBW 'failure' worst case is a high idle, which through a trophy truck converter and drive train etc isn't gonna be like what happened there.

I think the rules say it can’t be drive by wire and they need two throttle return springs.

But I could be wrong

I don't hear mechanical, sounds intentional, there was a gap and he could not stand the temptation. Sad for those effected.

maybe the driver dropped something in the cockpit and he was trying to pick it up....

I may have seen the dude driving that truck hop out with flip flops on (maybe not) - which can be a reason for unintended acceleration. just speculating. if so easy for a loose flip flop to jam a pedal. such a sad ordeal honestly

I'm pretty sure all sanctioning bodies require 2 return springs, I know NHRA Nascar, USAC...all do I'd be surprised if SCORE didn't

Unintended Acceleration is a topic I testified a few times as an expert witness. It's a phenomenon that doesn't happen often, but it does happen. It's terrifying for the driver.

Video of the incident is strange...looks like the throttle blip in the beginning but not after that. I'd investigate a mechanical issue...sudden significant vacuum leak could have developed...maybe after the initial blip to get the truck to move with a high stall converter and act like a stuck throttle....not enough time for the operator to react to the unexpected "throttle hang" type of situation.

Just like shutting down a fuel engine....the RPMs always climb when fuel is cut as it leans out right before it shuts down
